Re: Study: Spanking Kids Leads to More Aggressive Behavior
Without reading the article, part of me thinks its horse poo. If spanking my children is the lesser of two evils of the consequences of their behavior, you bet your bottom, their's will be red!! This is of course for severe circumstances...just like my mom did to me. Besides, I think it says somewhere in the bible, that it's okay to spank your kid with a rod or something right!!! I kid, I kid!!! I know what the bible said!

Re: Study: Spanking Kids Leads to More Aggressive Behavior
I am sure if you spank your kid every time they do something wrong, they will become more aggressive. IF you save it for REALLY bad offensives( running into the street), I don't see how this could happen.
I agree with previous poster. SO flame me too!

Re: Study: Spanking Kids Leads to More Aggressive Behavior
I'd have to read the actual journal article before drawing any real conclusions about the study, but this makes perfect sense, and is not a new argument. In the same way exposure to violent TV and video games is associated with an increase in aggressive behavior, viewing aggression from a parent or other adult is going to increase aggression in children.
I can't tell you how many times I've worked with parents who complain about their children hitting, only to find out that hitting in their main form of discipline. Imagine spanking a child while yelling "don't hit!" What kind of message does that send?
All of that said, I was spanked a couple of times as a kid, and I am far from aggressive. However, it has a lot to do with the frequency of the spanking.
I completely agree that spanking is a very short-term solution that only instills fear, but does not teach the child any long-term lesson.

Re: Study: Spanking Kids Leads to More Aggressive Behavior
I really am tired of this child has the same rights of adults b/s mentality. A child needs to have structure, discipline and of course love. Some kids needs a nice slap in the butt to get the point across when "talking" doesn't work. BUT IMO - i know its not for everyone and i can dig it but i know what i would be doing for our kid.

A child needs to have structure, discipline and of course love.
I don't think this article is refuting that, or saying that children should have the same rights as adults. There are effective ways of providing structure and discipline without spanking. It seems as though this study used a large sample and controlled for many other factors (including many that I would have looked for in arguing agains the artice, such as aggression between the parents, maternal stress, etc.). I also want to add that this is not a new argument (that spanking leads to aggression), but this study adds support to that theory.
I also wanted to add that I'm not a parent, but DH and I have discussed discipline of our future children, and we are not opposed to a swift slap in the butt under extreme circumstances. I think that in this study, it's important to consider the frequency of the spanking.
Children learn what they live..it makes sense. If a child sees a parent hitting in anger, they are more likely to do the same thing. It's a pretty basic behavioral principle.

Re: Study: Spanking Kids Leads to More Aggressive Behavior
oh completely agree, if you only hit your kid and that is the only form of discipline then yea your kid is going to grown up to be seriously mental. But if you do it for those extreme cases your child will grow up just fine.

I'll also add that I think spanking in anger doesn't help.
There is great irony to spank a child because they just hit their sibling.

Re: Study: Spanking Kids Leads to More Aggressive Behavior
not buying it- we'll be spanking our kids, not beating, not doing it in anger, but if they do something that warrants it and time out is not enough, we'll be spanking them

Re: Study: Spanking Kids Leads to More Aggressive Behavior
it's funny, because I kind of am on the fence about spanking, and only resort to it under certain circumstances.
however, my DH will spank for a lot of reasons, and then he doesn't get why my DS hits or smacks him when HE is angry.
My DS never hits or smacks me, and I think (in his case at least) he sees that if Daddy is angry, he hits. So my son thinks, "Well, I'm angry, so if I hit Daddy, it will get my point across."
But I wouldn't call him aggressive, but I guess time will tell.

Re: Study: Spanking Kids Leads to More Aggressive Behavior
This topic is on Tyra right now.
As for myself & DH, we will probably spank if DC does something extremely unacceptable and not as a daily occurrence.
I was spanked constantly & it made me an angry kid. My brother was not spanked & he was more calm.

I think obviously if you beat the ever-loving crap out of your kid for every minor offense, they WILL be aggressive. For discipline over a serious offense, I don't think anything wrong with it.

Re: Study: Spanking Kids Leads to More Aggressive Behavior
I personally do not agree.
My parents spanked me and guess what when they did I deserved it!
It was not all the time it was for serious things, I plan on doing the same.
I just thought it was an interesting article.

Not sure about the validity of the article, but I was not spanked and will not spank my children. I don't think they are mini-adults that should be reasoned with, what I say goes, BUT I don't think spanking teaches anything except I am bigger and stronger.

ITA I deal with this all the time at work. It really makes no sense!
However I am not totally against spanking, I don't think you should overuse it though it becomes meaningless.

Re: Study: Spanking Kids Leads to More Aggressive Behavior
I have spanked my son under extreme circumstances. Three times that I can remember and two of them were because he was running full speed ahead into a parking lot and not listening to me when I told him to stop.
Once was when we were walking up the stairs in our house when he decided to have a tantrum out of nowhere and he threw his body back at me almost knocking the two of us backwards.
I do remember that when I was pregnant with Tyler and he would push every button I had, all I did all day long was scream like a crazy maniac. He in turn would scream and act crazy right back at me. It was very frustrating but he was really mirroring my behavior.

I am bigger and stronger.
exactly.
I was surprised what "frequent" meant to the researchers:
The odds of a child being more aggressive at age 5 if he had been spanked more than twice in the month before the study began increased by 50%
