ooh I was going to say the opposite
OMG I just found this and thought it was funny!
I recently became aware of an interesting debate over what I thought was common sense. Until I started asking around, I never would have thought this was so contentious (i.e. I thought I was right, goddammit). The question is over which spice goes in which shaker. Here's the beef:
Flavor Camp: Salt goes in the shaker with more holes because people use salt more often, and in greater amounts. This equalizes the need, making one shake roughly the same for either spice.
Flow Camp: Pepper goes in the shaker with more holes because it consists of larger chunks than salt. This equalizes the flow, making one shake roughly the same for either spice.
I have always been in the flow camp, and assumed it to be a tautology, but perhaps this is like the great soda/pop/coke debacle, reflecting regional preference. No one I have talked to (including chefs, cooking store clerks, and moms) has been able to provide a convincing answer for either, and have been roughly divided between the two camps. Help?

Re: stupid question about salt and pepper shakers?
I always thought it went into the one with fewer holes b/c it's easier to control the amount that comes out. If too much pepper came out it wouldn't be as big of a deal as if you put too much salt on your food.

Re: stupid question about salt and pepper shakers?
I always put the pepper in the one with more holes and the salt in the one with fewer and thought that I was weird for doing it that way. I just like a lot of pepper.

Re: stupid question about salt and pepper shakers?
Ok so I just went to look at ours and they have the same number of holes and our other ones are both grinder type (for sea salt and real pepper corns). I guess I am no help. Sorry

Re: stupid question about salt and pepper shakers?
Wow....now I don't know!!
We have those grinder thingys - pepper and sea salt, so we don't use salt and pepper shakers.
But I think I put the salt in the one with four holes.

Same here except I thought salt was supposed to go in the one with fewer holes.

Re: stupid question about salt and pepper shakers?
pepper, depening on the source and cut, is bigger so requireing more holes will allow a good amount to exit as salt for the most part is smaller and more comes out.
so pepper more holes and salt, less holes
