I'm 33 and I still hear about how my mom was up until 2AM making my first birthday cake so I made DS's. We didn't have a huge party - just some family. It came out cute but looked like he helped 
Generally we get cakes from Costco or a supermarket.
I saw some really cute ones in Waldbaums last week.

I always have and always will stick with Sam's, BJs or Costco for cakes. For the price, you can't beat it

For DS' first Birthday we used Giglios Bakery in East Northport.
His 2nd Birthday cake was made by a friend from here.
