Sugar Cookie Help...Please don't move!
I'm making snowflake sugar cookies for daughter's first birthday on February 8th.
I should state that I bought the pre-packaged sugar cookie mix from Betty Crocker (i'm not making them from scratch)
I have to decorate each one and it will be rather labor intensive. I'd like to get started baking them but i don't know if they will be too hard by the time her party rolls around (in about 1½ weeks)
I read online that if i had made them scratch i could bake them and save them for up to 3 weeks. does the same apply to these?
thank you!

Re: Sugar Cookie Help...Please don't move!
First question- are you rolling them out and cutting out a shape? I honestly would not recommend this, especially for such an intricate shape as a snowflake. Pre-packaged dough tends to be soft and sticky and difficult to roll out and cut with a cookie cutter. Also, the dough spreads a lot when baked causing the cookies to lose their shape.
As far as baking in advance, I'd do them about a week ahead of time at the most. You can store them in an airtight tupperware container with a slice of bread. I know, it sounds weird, but it works. Storing them in tins or glass jars also helps to keep them soft.
If you're looking for a relatively easy from scratch recipe, I recommend using Sweet Sugarbelle's recipe. It's nice because it's not too sweet (I use half vanilla extract, half almond extract) which is good for cookies that you plan to decorate with royal icing since that can be very sweet. HTH!

Yes, pre-packaged dough really doesn't keep it's shape. Pre-packaged dough is responsible for pinterest fails like these:
What you might be able to do is just cut them out with a round cookie cutter (or a glass or anything round) and then pipe a snowflake design onto them. Something like this:

I second sugarbelle's recipe. The cookies are delicious and hold their shape very well. It's also very easy.

Sugar Cookie Help...Please don't move!
I make cutout sugar cookies for Christmas about 3 weeks in advance and they're always fine. I store them in a cookie tin with wax paper between layers.

Re: Sugar Cookie Help...Please don't move!
over the holidays we used cookie cutters on pre made sugar cookie dough. they came out fine. use flour if it gets too sticky. storing them in an air tight container will help with softness. i

Don't worry, I'm sure they'll come out great! I LOVE that you're making them yourself rather than just buying them! Good luck!

I would not do this. I did this for our Gingerbread cookie decorating party, wanted to do some sugar cookies and gingerbread. They blew up, they were huge and the shape was really distorted! That horse picture is just about how they looked!!

Re: Sugar Cookie Help...Please don't move!
(They literally moved this post as I was reading it )
Anyway, I make my sugar cookies from scratch. It's not hard at all. I also found a great tip for rolling out the dough that I swear by now. I roll it out between 2 pieces of plastic/Saran wrap...so my rolling pin doesn't even touch the dough. Then I refrigerate the rolled out later of dough for an hour. Then I peel off the plastic wrap and cut out my shapes. It works well to prevent sticking and I don't have to use any flour, which can change the taste if used too much.

Re: Sugar Cookie Help...Please don't move!
making the dough from scratch really isn't that much harder than using the betty crocker mix. I made some sugar cookies a few years ago for Christmas, I don't remember what recipe I used but I'm sure I can find it if you are interested.

LOL Well the post is the appropriate forum, not sure what the eye rolling is about (I have no clue where it was before)
You can also freeze them undecorated until you decorate them.
Here is my grandma's recipe... very easy, and they turn out great. Just make sure the dough is chilled. I also don't sift the dry ingredients.
Cut Out Cookies (Grandma Winans) 1 c. shortening 1 c. sugar 2 eggs 1 1/2 t. vanilla 3 1/2 c. sifted flour 1/2 t. baking powder 1/2 t. salt
Cream shortening and sugar. Add eggs; beat. Add vanilla. Mix and sift together flour, baking powder and salt. Add to mixture. Mix well. Chill covered in refrigerator or freezer until firm. Roll a small amount of the dough at a time to 1/4" thickness. Cut with cookie cutters. Bake on greased cookie sheet 15 minutes at 350 degrees.

About storing them, yes you can freeze them. I start my Christmas cookies in November, just put them in Tupperware and put wax appear between each layer so they don't stick.
And yes, make the dough. Other than measuring, it's not much harder than the mix and the cookies will hold their shape much better
