suggestions for classes/activities
Hi everyone!
DS's teacher suggested that we start doing more social interaction outside of the school day for him. I work FT, so I am looking for weekend things. She mentioned soccer or gymnastics, but I was also thinking of safety swim or something like that.
Any suggestions? Are there classes tailored to special needs kids if I need that?

Re: suggestions for classes/activities
Those are all good suggestions.
We do music class with my son through Music Together. He really loves music so this is a good option for us. We go on Saturday mornings and it is a fun thing to do with DS, DH and I.
I live in NJ and fortunate enough to have this group based out of my town that specializes in activities for kids with special needs. So we've done baseball through them and now we are doing a "social sports" class which emphasizes team work, social interaction and teaches them how to play some sports. They also have bowling and soccer but we haven't done those yet since it really starts at age 3. Maybe look in your area to see if you can find something like that.
Look at your local library or town recreation office - although I know how frustrating these things are for a working mother because you'll usually find that most activities run during the week.
Also look at gymboree too. Do some google searches for special needs activities.

Re: suggestions for classes/activities
I am not sure where you are located but I can't say enough about the Rockville Centre Rec Center's Tumbles program. It's a mommy and me class and if your child is over 3 you would have the option to 'separate' or have him attend the tumbles 2 class. The way the class is set up, it's extremely structured and predictable, yet at the same time "free". The class begins with a free play on the tremendous amount of equipment, then the children unite for a hello song, parachute play, motor planning songs etc. Then the children do a 'free" obstacle course, then bubbles, and then a goodbye song. Every week same thing, same songs with a tiny bit added in. The instructors are so "open" and truly there are no set rules for sitting etc My dd has learned so much from that class as far as imitating etc goes.
It's also quite affordable at about $135 for 10 weeks.

Re: suggestions for classes/activities
B/F's son did gymnastics and bowling. The gymnastics had a special needs class. The bowling was mini-bowling and he was one of the older kids - fit in okay.
