summer birthdays
Hi everyone,
I was looking at the webpage for one of the special ed pre-schools and it said that they evaluate children for pre-school at ages 3 and 4.
What happens to kids with a summer birthday? I assume that all of the schools' academic years begin in September, and that spots fill up quickly, so if a child isn't evaluated until the summer, what do they do? My son will be 3 next summer but he has classic autism and will almost certainly qualify for a special ed pre-school. I am concerned that if we wait until the summer to get him evaluated, that he will qualify but there won't be any spots left anywhere.
What is typically done for kids with summer birthdays? Will some schools or agencies allow them to be evaluated sooner?
Thanks!

Re: summer birthdays
Right after Xmas your EI coordinator should be starting to explain the process to you. I would try to get the cpse paperwork done around Jan/Feb, ...the evals will start shortly after, and then the CPSE meeting.
In some ways it's good because you can know what you are dealing with but in other ways it's difficult because your ds in late winter/early spring will be so different then in the fall ...but it helps to get the ball rolling. Also in case you want something different from CPSE , it gives you give time to get another meeting before the school year.
Since your ds has summer birthday, you can choose to have him remain in EI until the end of August or actually start CPSE services right after his birthday. If he gets into a school you want right away, you may forego the EI services and get started with CPSE.

just to correct this statement. ALL children may remain in EI until August 31st.
for moms who have children prior to the Aug 31st date, if you choose to end EI you certainly can when the child turns 3, but every child will will transition from EI to CPSE by your schools K cut off date) may remain in EI until Aug 31st.
remember when transitioning from EI to CPSE you are now receiving services with the approval of your school district. most districts will reduce your therapies by 75%. if your child will be attending a full day of school.
AJ was accepted into a summer program for CPSE when he was 2 going on 3, but i chose to remain in EI because he would have lost 20 hours of home therapy.
