why do i need to tip the group leader? i don't even know who she is.

You don't HAVE to tip anyone.

If you know of any counselors that work with your son that he likes, and feel they deserve a tip,do that.

If not, then don't. You're not obligated.

I didn't even realize one was expected to tip at summer camp! If someone goes out of their way and my child raves about this person, I would definitely send a thank you gift, otherwise no. I refuse to be pressured into tipping.

i'm definitely tipping everyone else (counselors, bus driver, swim instructor)...i just don't understand why a group leader needs to be tipped. especially when i don't know who she is.

Re: Summer Camp tipping

Wow this is insane.
I def agree with a PP who mentions this is a NY thing. All my friends had their kids enrolled in camps, and it's def NOT the standard here to be tipping like this. Like, at all.

If you want to tip then tip and if you don't then don't. It's really not a big deal. I personally tip anyone who goes out of the way for my child. It's just nice to give a thank you. Whether it's a $50 tip, box of candy or just a card, it's the thought that counts.

I'm a counselor during the summer and to be honest, we are not paid well. I get less than minimum wage and really hope for tips. That being said, most parents rarely tip. I work with the youngest group of kids for two sessions (4 weeks) and received $5 each session. I'm with these kids from 8:15 until 4:00 and do everything with them except teach them to swim. It gets a little upsetting when we end camp and I've spent as much on gas getting there as what we make.

Playing Devils Advocate though, a lot of these camps are expensive enough. It's not the parents fault that the owners don't pay their staff a lot.

I get the whole argument that you want good staff watching your kids, but some of these "tips" equate to an extra session or more.

Also working in a traditionally low paying field that I needed a Master's for, I personally don't have a lot of sympathy for younger kids who do this for a summer.

I had to work plenty of minimum wage jobs myself back in the day.

Sorry if that sounds mean but I know that a lot of working parents have no choice but to pay these camp prices and it really puts them in a bad spot financially.

Wow I think that's crazy. If you can't afford to then don't. I would feel like an idiot if I could only afford $10 and they were suggesting $50 Chat Icon

Someone said people tip bc they feel they need to, I tip bc I want to, I tip bc I can afford to and I know they don't make much. I don't judge those who don't but if you can afford to I do feel you should tip, JMO

Don't worry about the minimums. Give what you can but give something, I don't understand how ANYONE can just give nothing and feel ok about that.

Even if it is $5. $5 for 5 people over 8-10 weeks is $2-3 a week - the price of an iced coffee. If you absolultely can't come up with $2 a week from your budget - a heart felt note / hand made card from your family goes A LONG way to showing your appreciation.

We received a suggested tip rate of $1.00 per day for the CIT and 2.50 per day for the counselor. In Cash delivered to the office. -

HA- No thank you I will hand deliver a tip to the counselors that worked with my son all summer. I like to make sure the person the tip is intended for gets it.

Honestly, if I'm paying rates such as these for a DAYCAMP and am expected to shell out even more for tips, I'm taking it up with camp management. Why are you underpaying employees when I am clearly paying enough for you to cover your costs. I'm not cheap and would tip for extraordinary service but I have a problem with the expectation....definitely not the norm outside the tri-state area.

Full Day Eight Weeks

$5,095

Full Day Seven Weeks

$4,895

Full Day Six Weeks

$4,795

Full Day Five Weeks

$3,995

Full Day Four Weeks

$3,295

Just doing the quick math- thats $823.75 PER WEEK for a 4-week program.

Yikes! I sent DD1 to "camp" at her pre-k for 2 weeks and didn't think to tip. She only went 3 days a week for 2.5hrs.

Now I feel bad....lol

Oh well, next year I'll do better.

Re: Summer Camp tipping

When I worked at a summer camp (5 full days cost about $6k, this was 10+ years ago) groupleaders were typically tipped $50-60 and counselors were typically tipped $30-40 for an 8 week summer. Counselors were paid a pittance, usually something like $600 for the summer, and relied on tips. Its hard because I fully agree that when parents pay big bucks for camp the camp should use that money to pay their employees. Its part of why I stopped working there, it was ridiculous even with tips.

My DS currently attends camp 9-1 3 days a week. He is 3yo. We will tip, but not sure how much. He has one groupleader who we dont love, and I think 4 counselors, maybe even 5. We like the counselors but it adds up. We may give the groupleader $20 and the counselors $10. Or, I might do $5 and $10 to starbucks, coupled with ourmet chocs from homegoods. Not sure yet.

Thanks for all the replies. I paid $420/ week/kid plus food for camp. It's not one of the priciest of camps but like others I wonder why the counselors aren't paid more. I honestly didn't budget or factor in another $200-400 in tips either. It's a learning lesson for next year.

Re: Summer Camp tipping

It's really a shame that counselors don't get paid more. They work so hard to take care of your kids and make sure that they have a great time at camp. I think this is especially true for the pricey camps. Counselors are held to a high standard and are not compensated nearly enough.

On the other hand, parents really shouldn't feel obligated to tip considering what they have to pay for tuition. If anything, tips should be factored in the total cost. That way, parents don't feel the pressure to tip and counselors get paid a more fair wage.

I would've never thought to tip with the price of summer camp. Insane! Tipping is getting way out of hand. I think it's really tacky to send out letters of recommended tips.
