It is great...i love it. It really is just all about being part of the running community. People are friendly, barbequeing, drinking beer together afterwards.
one thing I will say is plan on extra time to getting to the parks. and then still add 15-20 minutes to that.

Re: Summer Run Series
I really wanted to do it but with working in the city I don't think I will make it in time to the parks. I think I may just do the Jones Beach one and if I can get out of work early enough the one at Sunken Meadow since that is my favorite place to run!

Re: Summer Run Series
yes you have to pay, but the full series (running 8 races for $50) is sold out. Also three races are sold out (caumsett, belmont? and one other - hempstead?) for the individual races.
(this is what was posted when I picked up my number tonight.)

Re: Summer Run Series
I signed up for the first time this year too! My dad used to do it when I was a kid, and he and I have been running together for a few years now so we both signed up. I am so excited!
Of course I am going to have to try to bolt out of work to get there in time for each race from what others are saying.
For those who have done it, how bad is the Sunken Meadow race??

It could be worse...but you do go up the worst hill - cardiac (and even getting to cardiac is a long slow incline) at about mile 3. otherwise there are some rolling hills, but not too bad - boardwalk and parking lot is all flat.

I remember training for the half and we went to sunken meadow a few times that cardiac hill is a killer!

I live in KP so I run at Sunken Meadow all the time. I just tend to avoid cardiac hill as often as possible! Haha. This will be my first 10K of 2010 though so I am nervous starting off with such a hilly one!

Re: Summer Run Series
Hecksher will be a flat 5 mile - a good warm up for sunken meadow.
I ran XC at Sunken Meadow and we had to run up cardiac 2x every week (league meets and invitationals)
it's definitely worse now! LOL

Re: Summer Run Series
I wanted to sign up for the Belmont race in August because I think I'll be ready for the 5k by then, but it is saying registration is closed....does this mean I can't run?

registration is closed for the full series (all 8) you can still sign up for other races (3 were closed - caumsett definitely and I think the other 2 were belmont and hemstead) You can go to the packet pick up tonight and see what is left to register for.
Always on race day there were individual add-ons, but this series is getting bigger and bigger, so not sure if you will be able to sign up the day of.

Re: Summer Run Series
How did we do in the rain last night?
It felt nice, but it shorted out my nike+ and I didn't bring my garmin watch. I'm so dependant on them for pacing! I decided not to get upset and probably could have run a minute faster, but I'm not terribly disappointed in my time.

Re: Summer Run Series
Well my first run for the summer series was not so good because I had to miss it Sunday night I started throwing up and lasted to about 10pm last night (on and off) I was trying to push my self to go but I couldn't even get off the couch Hopefully nothing gets in my way next Monday. Hope everyone else had a great run!

I may sign up for some of the individual runs that are closer to me. Some of the ones in suffolk are a bit too far

Re: Summer Run Series
I couldn't believe that the rain started when it did!! Then of course it was beautiful out AFTER the race... But overall it was nice and I felt good.
I am really nervous about Cardiac Hill though this coming Monday. I know it was mentioned that it's at mile 3, but does anyone know which way they run it? Up the steepest part or up the sort of winding part??

Re: Summer Run Series
Melissa - sorry to hear about your bug...hope you are feeling better and we see you on Monday.
Megan - the 10K will go towards Cardiac from the parking lot - so up the long increasing hill (going through the picnic area) before you get to cardiac, whe you get into the woods you make the left up the steep part and come down the winding part (I think that is what you are asking)
don't worry about Cardiac. you can walk up. I ran x-country at sunken meadow and NEVER ran up cardiac and I was still All-County. I used this giant step walk and when I was in 9th grade I realized that I wasn't losing much ground from the girls trying to run up it. When I got to the top I was so well rested, I used to sprint down hill and finished strong. So walk if you need!

Re: Summer Run Series
Thanks so much! I always avoid Cardiac when I run in the park, so I have been dreading it. Hopefully it won't be too hot and humid on Monday!

Re: Summer Run Series
In my opinion, it is significantly steeper than James St. in the Cow Harbor race.
However, it's not as long a hill - but there is a winding uphill on your way to Cardiac Hill. On the bright side (if you can see it that way!) there's lots of recovery downhill once you get through it.
I am not looking for a personal best or anything though anyway, so I just hope I get through it without pushing myself too hard.

Re: Summer Run Series
megan is spot on. steeper, but shorter. They both have the annoying long inclining leads (picnic area vs Bayview st)
megan - no way am I looking for a PR. I'm actually giving myself 2-3 minute cushion...LOL
