Sunrise mall
It was a piece of shit mall even when I grew up there 15-20 years ago.
Just because "people with money" live in the area doesn't mean businesses want to buy into that mall. If they don't think it's a place that will increase their revenue why would they? Why would Nordstrom want to be in the same mall as Walmart?

I grew up in Valley Stream with Greenacres... Sunrise Mall is NOTHING.
I agree... I was not allowed to go to that mall by myself until I was 21.. And I had to go with someone.. When I worked for a security company, they wouldn't let me work there. And I was armed!!!
I don't go there now... And I am a lot older.. Any big shopping area can be dangerous. I go to Sunrise Mall because it is close to me and less crowded then RF... I don't go on the weekends because it is always crowded....

Re: Sunrise mall
I have to disagree with the people who say it's always been bad. I think it was a very typical mall 15-20 years ago but it's gone WAY downhill. I haven't walked through it in probably 5-10 years but last time I did I noticed it seemed to be filling up with no-name stores. It didn't seem like there was really many places worth shopping.
I think the Walmart was really a horrible idea also.

Re: Sunrise mall
I grew up in Massapequa and actually worked in Sunrise Mall during HS. Occasionally I'll go to Macy's when I'm visiting my parents, but I haven't stepped into the actual "mall" part in over 10 years. And last time I was there, I remember seeing a lot of empty stores. Westfield tried to clean it up, but guess it didn't work out very well.

Sunrise mall
It's not terrible for a quick run during the day. I live nearby and there are plenty of stores there that I will shop in. I wouldn't go there at night anymore, but I think that's true of most malls nowadays. There just isn't enough security.

Sunrise mall
The malls pretty bad and walmart did not help it at all, ever go to that mall on a Sunday? Pshhhh. Westfield didn't do it any good and the rent got really high at one point so that's when stores started closing. The Macy's is a joke there

Re: Sunrise mall
I agree with what everyone is saying about Sunrise.
It's sad that so many people are disgusted with it because as women/mothers we purchase so much of the consumer goods for our families (clothing, shoes, toys, etc.) and to think that no one wants to shop there is pretty pathetic.

My point was that they could do so much to better the community.
But obviously, with Wal-Mart and little else it's not going to attract the higher end anchors.
Honestly, I think the days of hanging out at the mall are ending.......it's like the main street phenomenon from even longer ago.
People want to get in and out of stores quickly or order online want they want.
The mall is no longer a sense of community like it once was.

Sunrise mall
I work in Periwinkle in the mall. I also grew up in Massapequa. I never feel unsafe in the day. When I have to work at night I get a ride. I never felt comfortable in parking lot at night. I feel our store is probably one of the nicest. Always busy.

My parents, who were very strict and safety-oriented, allowed me to take the bus there with my friends starting in high school, so it couldn't have been too bad. (mid/late 80s) I never felt unsafe when visiting, but I probably haven't been there since 2004 or so.
I think the days of big department stores are numbered too and that's going to do a number on malls. JCP and Sears are tanking. My local mall, Danbury Fair, had a Filene stand empty for a few years before they carved it up into 3 stores and 2 restaurants, I can see that happening more too, which would be better than Walmart.

Re: Sunrise mall
I don't think Sunrise is bad as in dangerous. I wouldn't be in the parking lot at night, but in the day I don't see a problem with it. I grew up in one of the boroughs, so maybe what's bad to me is different than what's bad to others. The stores arn't that good, but for a quick shop, I have found stuff there. My regular Mall Is Roosevelt Field since I prefer the stores there better. If they took out that smelly Walmart they could probably bring in better stores.

Re: Sunrise mall
I just discovered that mall. Since I live much closer to Roosevelt field mall I didn't want to go there during the holidays so I decided to check out this mall. I actually liked it, not crowded and did the job. I did go into that Walmart and it did not feel right, I walked right out. I would go back to thst mall but not Walmart.

Re: Sunrise mall
I worked in massapequa for 10plus years and I would go to that mall pretty regularly. I agree it changed when Walmart came in.
As for bay shore mall, if I need a dress for a wedding or something I park near lord and Taylor and just go in there.
I don't like malls in general, I don't think I've been inside smithaven which is closest to me in 8 or 9 years. The Riverhead outlets are 5 min from my house. I love being able to go right to a specific store and then leave.
