Supplementing BM with formula

If I don't have enough BM to feed the baby for the day (for example, if she eats 24oz but I only pumped 22oz the day before for her) and I want to make up the shortage with formula, can I mix the formula in with the BM or does it have to be given separately, by itself? I was thinking that I could mix the 22oz of BM with 2oz of formula to make the total of 24oz and then just divide it into the bottles. That way, she will only be getting a small amount of formula in each bottle. I am a bit concerned about what the formula will do to her belly if she gets several ounces of it all at once. She has only gotten BM for the past 2.5 months and she tends to be gassy and a bit colicky as it is, with the BM.

Has anybody had success with this, or is there a better way to do this?

As of now, I am still making enough milk for her, but if my supply drops off at all, we will be start being short every day.

You'll probably get mixed answers on this. In the beginning I kept them separate because avid BM people will say the formula destroys the breastmilk. Finally I threw that to the wind and mixed them because I was sick of making separate bottles.

You can mix. Some say to mix to ease a child on formula anyhow (when weaning.) I always did separate because I found it easier for me.

I was mixing BM with Formula, until last week. I made Noah breakfast and tasted the cereal and it tasted RANCID. Not actually rotten, but rottenesque. Every other bottle I tasted was the same, it just didn't taste nice at all. So I stopped and I have just kept on pumping. I will continue to mix it if I need to because the scamp won't take formula on its own, but for the minute, while I still have a great supply of BM, he will only have BM.

Yes, I taste my own BM. If he is eating it, I darn well sure want to know it tastes okay.

Re: Supplementing BM with formula

I supplement. I have the same issue with milk production. I only supplement 2-3 2oz bottles a day. I feed her from my breast mostly but when I do pump I keep the bottles with the formula separate. Like Racheee said in her post, it smelled really bad.

Re: Supplementing BM with formula

that's what I did when I started supplementing with formula - I used mostly BM and mixed in like an ounce of formula, then more formula, then 1/2 and 1/2. etc/ until she was taking only formula. I still BF first thing in the am and before bed, and the remainder of the day she gets formula.

When I weaned myself, but was using my freezer supply, I mixed, just so if I didn't have enough to last to one year, It wouldn't be a shock to DS

Re: Supplementing BM with formula

We store them separate but mix them when we give them to her. Makes the formula much more appealing to her.

I stored them seperately but mixed them for feedings when my DD was still getting pumped BM if I didn't have enough for a full bottle of BM.

this is from LLL

http://www.lalecheleague.org/FAQ/mixing.html

It seems the only reason they say not to mix is in case they don't get all the BM...but don't mention any physical harm coming to the BM by mixing with formula
