Survey for the working mothers
I'm taking an unofficial survey here simply because I'm curious as to how this new school year will be effecting families and work/life dynamic. Disclaimer: I am putting SO here but construe it liberally to mean whomever would fit that role in your life (DH, BF, baby daddy, etc.)
1. Who mostly handled the remote learning/home schooling /whatever you want to call it in the spring? You, your SO or someone else?
2. If job duties or obligations have been effected by child care issues during this pandemic, whose job is more so effected? Yours, your SO or equally effected
3. With regard to schools reopening, who will have to make adjustments to their work schedule to accommodate the new school year? You, SO, neither or equally
4. If your school is doing a hybrid model or you are planning on doing exclusive virtual learning or homeschooling, who will be responsible for setting your child(ren) up with the computer, signed on, engaged in the learning, etc.? You, SO , neither or equal?
5. What are you planning on doing for child care on "off" days?

1. Who mostly handled the remote learning/home schooling /whatever you want to call it in the spring? You, your SO or someone else?
Me (mom) I did literally everything.
2. If job duties or obligations have been effected by child care issues during this pandemic, whose job is more so effected? Yours, your SO or equally effected
I teach and did all my planning on weekends and after my DH got off of work. For live instruction, my son would sit and watch a show.
3. With regard to schools reopening, who will have to make adjustments to their work schedule to accommodate the new school year? You, SO, neither or equally
My DH will be doing pick up and drop off since he will continue to WFH. Teaching had no flexibility.
4. If your school is doing a hybrid model or you are planning on doing exclusive virtual learning or homeschooling, who will be responsible for setting your child(ren) up with the computer, signed on, engaged in the learning, etc.? You, SO , neither or equal?
N/A
5. What are you planning on doing for child care on "off" days?
If my son needs to quarantine, my DH will be the one to handle it this year. If that doesn’t work, I’ll need to take time with the Families First Coronavirus Response Act.

Survey for the working mothers
I’ll answer as if I had gone back to work last year.
In all seriousness, I would have had to resign in March. There would have been zero way I could have done my job with the way they handled remote learning, and dh could have done his job. He makes 4x what I did when I stopped working, so there would have been no question who would have stopped working.

Re: Survey for the working mothers
The answer to all your questions is that we share the duties and are totally winging it. It’s extremely difficult and mentally harder on me.
My kids will go to school in the fall so we will see how long that lasts. I’m dreading it.

Survey for the working mothers
I’m a single mom so I’ve done most of it when I have my son (50/50 week on/week off). I’ve been able to work remotely so it’s not as difficult since my son is 10 and can handle a lot on his own. I do have an SO (boyfriend) and we stay at his house during that time so my son can play with his kids, but he has his hands full (he has 4 kids ranging from 6-13) so taking care of my son’s needs is all on me.
100% remote learning - even if a hybrid is available.

We share it all. I won’t have it any other way. My job is just as important than his so I make sure I do not take on more than him. If it starts shifting we have a conversation about it.
However, as of yesterday DH is permanently working from home. They closed his and another office. I did tell him when I do go back he has to take on something’s because he is home.

Survey for the working mothers
Just as backup info, I only have one kid and she's going into 7th grade. So, she's pretty self sufficient and definitely knows how to use computers.
1. I mostly handled the remote learning in the spring. She was able to do it by herself, but sometimes she wanted company. I type faster than she does, so she would dictate her answers to me and I would type it onto the Google Classroom site.
2. I would say that both our jobs have been affected equally. We were both able to work from home. The two of us coordinate with each other if we needed to go into the office.
3. In the Fall, we probably would have more or less equal adjustments to our work schedule. We would just coordinate regarding who goes to the office and who works from home the days when DD is home. We're lucky because both of our employers are understanding of the situation.
4. My DD is pretty self sufficient, so we won't need to set her up on the computer. We'll just have to occasionally check in on her to make sure she's actually doing work and not on TikTok! I tend to do that more often, but DH does it too.
5. On off days, she'll just stay home with whoever happens to be working from home that day. She's 12, so she'll just be on her phone all day anyway.
I must admit that this is MUCH easier with a tween/teenager. I can't imagine what we would do with toddlers or young kids!

Re: Survey for the working mothers
1. Who mostly handled the remote learning/home schooling /whatever you want to call it in the spring? You, your SO or someone else?
Me - SO did work with DS 2 when he was home but, I did the most of it.
2. If job duties or obligations have been effected by child care issues during this pandemic, whose job is more so effected? Yours, your SO or equally effected
Mine - DH is a fireman so he works outside of the home on a rotating schedule and had to go to work the whole time.
3. With regard to schools reopening, who will have to make adjustments to their work schedule to accommodate the new school year? You, SO, neither or equally
Me - DH can't.
4. If your school is doing a hybrid model or you are planning on doing exclusive virtual learning or homeschooling, who will be responsible for setting your child(ren) up with the computer, signed on, engaged in the learning, etc.? You, SO , neither or equal?
DH when he's home and me the rest of the time.
5. What are you planning on doing for child care on "off" days?
The kids will be stay home on the other days that they aren't working. We are potentially looking into a pod - my friend wants to set one up but, she didn't do any of the distance learning in the fall so I'm not sure if she knows what she's getting herself into.

Re: Survey for the working mothers
I will preface by saying that we have been EXTREMELY lucky with DH's job flexibility. As of now, he is working remote until end of year, possibly until next summer.
1. Who mostly handled the remote learning/home schooling /whatever you want to call it in the spring? You, your SO or someone else? I handled the learning until I started working in May. Then DH would try to help, and either ended up calling me or DS figured it out himself.
2. If job duties or obligations have been effected by child care issues during this pandemic, whose job is more so effected? Yours, your SO or equally effected? luckily, we have not been affected.
3. With regard to schools reopening, who will have to make adjustments to their work schedule to accommodate the new school year? You, SO, neither or equally ? DH is home, so he'll walk DS to and form school and he's home for the remote "off" days
4. If your school is doing a hybrid model or you are planning on doing exclusive virtual learning or homeschooling, who will be responsible for setting your child(ren) up with the computer, signed on, engaged in the learning, etc.? You, SO , neither or equal? i work outside the home, so DS sets himself up and if he has issues DH is there to help.
5. What are you planning on doing for child care on "off" days? luckily DH is home. DS is an only child and god at entertaining himself, usually with legos, ipad, or books.

Survey for the working mothers
1. Both of us
2. Neither so far- we had a part time sitter when we were all home and DD was glued to the iPad the other half. Now she’s in camp.
3. Me, but that’s because he works from home normally and I do not. We will both be home the majority of the time when school starts because neither of us can manage our workload and virtual school by ourselves.
4. Likely both of us.
5. There are no “off” days, each day is equally nightmare inducing. If there were off days, we’d work and she’d watch tv.

Survey for the working mothers
1. Who mostly handled the remote learning/home schooling /whatever you want to call it in the spring? I handled it for the most part. But he would fill in if I had to go into the office for some reason.
2. If job duties or obligations have been effected by child care issues during this pandemic, whose job is more so effected? I guess mine was more effected but just in that is was more stressful for me not that my boss noticed.
3. With regard to schools reopening, who will have to make adjustments to their work schedule to accommodate the new school year? We are set to go back full time so for however long that works neither of us will be affected. But I do work part time (4 days) so if adjustments need to be made I will be more flexible.
4. If your school is doing a hybrid model or you are planning on doing exclusive virtual learning or homeschooling, who will be responsible for setting your child(ren) up with the computer, signed on, engaged in the learning, etc.? Equal. If we go hybrid I will make some changes to my schedule and he will have to set up for the "meets". But honestly, our child had a hard time adjusting and worked best with me (we also tried to involve grandparents at one point but that didn't work out). So depending on how long they'll be home I may need to be more involved.
5. What are you planning on doing for child care on "off" days? Myself or Grandparents.
Just wanted to add that while I did a lot of the school work, he would make meals, do the shopping and during the summer took extra days off for childcare as well. So it really was a joint effort.

Re: Survey for the working mothers
My 6th grader handled almost everything on his own. He usually woke up early and was finished with work by 9 except for scheduled zoom meetings. He also helped entertain his 2 year old sister when he finished work. My 2nd grader didn’t adjust well to distance learning and needed a lot of encouragement and oversight. DH and I shared those duties with DH probably taking on more of the responsibility the first few months. I had added responsibilities related to COVID and my job was completely overwhelming. I had a really difficult time trying to balance distance learning with work and was grateful that DH had more flexibility to help out.
We’re both working from home until further notice although I have started attending on site meetings a few times per week. Right now, our elementary school will be in person 5 days per week and 6-12 will be in person twice per week. My youngest is back in daycare so I’m hoping things will be much more manageable for as long as school is open.

1. Who mostly handled the remote learning/home schooling /whatever you want to call it in the spring? You, your SO or someone else?- Me and DH when he was home.
2. If job duties or obligations have been effected by child care issues during this pandemic, whose job is more so effected? Yours, your SO or equally effected - Mine because DH works out of the house
3. With regard to schools reopening, who will have to make adjustments to their work schedule to accommodate the new school year? You, SO, neither or equally - Me - I work from home
4. If your school is doing a hybrid model or you are planning on doing exclusive virtual learning or homeschooling, who will be responsible for setting your child(ren) up with the computer, signed on, engaged in the learning, etc.? You, SO , neither or equal?- Me I work from home DH works out side the house. my DD is pretty self efficent its my son who will struggle with this and I wont have the time to really dedicate because I have to work
5. What are you planning on doing for child care on "off" days?Nothing as of now they will stay home they are supposed to be online to learn the days off. If SCOPE offers something for days off I may take it if they can do the work there. I refuse to anyone ridiculous amounts of money for them to come to my house. So unless I find something very reasonable they will have to stay home with me

Re: Survey for the working mothers
1. Who mostly handled the remote learning/home schooling /whatever you want to call it in the spring? You, your SO or someone else?
I'm married, but it was 100% me. I worked from home the entire time (still am) and DH is an essential worker in the hospital. He worked long hours and honestly, school isn't his thing.
2. If job duties or obligations have been effected by child care issues during this pandemic, whose job is more so effected? Yours, your SO or equally effected
I have been working full-time from home since early March and will continue to do so. My job is able to be done at home (DH's isn't) and I'm lucky my job is understanding.
3. With regard to schools reopening, who will have to make adjustments to their work schedule to accommodate the new school year? You, SO, neither or equally.
Me. I'm going to continue working from home as we chose 100% remote.
4. If your school is doing a hybrid model or you are planning on doing exclusive virtual learning or homeschooling, who will be responsible for setting your child(ren) up with the computer, signed on, engaged in the learning, etc.? You, SO , neither or equal?
Again, me. We're doing 100% remote, and it will be on me. DD is 10, but has dyslexia and needs help. There are certain things she can do, but needs me for most of it. It was hell in the spring and it will be hell this year, I'm sure.
5. What are you planning on doing for child care on "off" days? I'm home. DD is good about keeping herself occupied, but there are some rough days. I'm so busy at work, that I can't really take much time to spend with her during the day.

Survey for the working mothers
1. Who mostly handled the remote learning/home schooling /whatever you want to call it in the spring? You, your SO or someone else?
Me. Just me. My DS was in Kindergarten last year for reference.
2. If job duties or obligations have been effected by child care issues during this pandemic, whose job is more so effected? Yours, your SO or equally effected
My job. My DH would lock himself in our office to work. At first, I was so stressed out trying to figure out working from home (I'm a speech therapist) I didn't think much of it, then it started to get frustrating because I had to work and discipline my son. My son would scream, bother the dog, bother me, while I was on with a child. My DH's argument is that his job is less child friendly than mine. Basically all of that was more acceptable for my job. We worked things out a bit and now my DH comes out to check in on things or I'll send him an SOS text to come out. Or he just listens in for the screams lol.
3. With regard to schools reopening, who will have to make adjustments to their work schedule to accommodate the new school year? You, SO, neither or equally
Our district is planning on having students in the building 5 days a week so it shouldn't be a problem. My DH will be working from indefinitely so can bring my son to school or do the bus. My DH is hesitant about the bus but we will see.
4. If your school is doing a hybrid model or you are planning on doing exclusive virtual learning or homeschooling, who will be responsible for setting your child(ren) up with the computer, signed on, engaged in the learning, etc.? You, SO , neither or equal?
Hopefully this won't happen. We are having a baby in October so I will be home for awhile. I'm sure this will fall on me if it happens because I'm not working.
5. What are you planning on doing for child care on "off" days? My DH says it is okay because he is home. But I'm sure that just means more screen time and youtube. I mean what else is there to do?

Re: Survey for the working mothers
1. Who mostly handled the remote learning/home schooling /whatever you want to call it in the spring? You, your SO or someone else?
***It was only me until I lost it on DH and he helped out more. Towards the end it was probably 60/40 me but I'm a former teacher and I'm always going to have a greater role in this stuff so it's fine.
2. If job duties or obligations have been effected by child care issues during this pandemic, whose job is more so effected? Yours, your SO or equally effected
***I've been mostly off for the summer so I guess N/A but before that it's hard to say because I have more flexibility. So it was me, but it was fine, if that makes sense.
3. With regard to schools reopening, who will have to make adjustments to their work schedule to accommodate the new school year? You, SO, neither or equally
***Equally
4. If your school is doing a hybrid model or you are planning on doing exclusive virtual learning or homeschooling, who will be responsible for setting your child(ren) up with the computer, signed on, engaged in the learning, etc.? You, SO , neither or equal?
***N/A but my mother would be involved heavily.
5. What are you planning on doing for child care on "off" days?
***N/A also but I could do some work from home and again, grandmas would be involved.

1. I did for my son and I did about 2/3 for my SO's son. I went back to my office on 6/22 so school was just wrapping up so it wasn't an issue then
2. Ours weren't effected terribly. I do WFH one day a week and my SO has a weekday off. His son is with his mother on the other days, my son sees his father one day and we have a sitter one day.
3. Me I guess because my son will come into the office with me on some of the days he isn't in school
4. My son is 13. He can do all of the logistics but he also has an IEP and I have to help him by reading certain things to him
5. He will come to work with me on some days

2. If job duties or obligations have been effected by child care issues during this pandemic, whose job is more so effected? Yours, your SO or equally effected —-
my husband is cat scan tech so childcare issues affect him more than me. I can work from home.

I guess it would be me since I work at home

I am working from home so I will do the best I can on days they are not in school.

1. Who mostly handled the remote learning/home schooling /whatever you want to call it in the spring? You, your SO or someone else?
Me. DH is completely hands off when it comes to school except to ask if homework is completed. Even when school was fully functional he wouldn't check HW or sign the log book that it was completed.
2. If job duties or obligations have been effected by child care issues during this pandemic, whose job is more so effected? Yours, your SO or equally effected
I think we were both affected equally.
3. With regard to schools reopening, who will have to make adjustments to their work schedule to accommodate the new school year? You, SO, neither or equally Neither at this time. This of course can change if either my office or DH's office (or both) open full-time. Right now, I'm one day a week and his is completely shut-down.
4. If your school is doing a hybrid model or you are planning on doing exclusive virtual learning or homeschooling, who will be responsible for setting your child(ren) up with the computer, signed on, engaged in the learning, etc.? You, SO , neither or equal? No assistance is required unless there is an issue. Most of the time DH resolves the issues with the computer, but that is because he went to school for it.
5. What are you planning on doing for child care on "off" days? We are home - see answer to question 3.

Re: Survey for the working mothers
1. Who mostly handled the remote learning/home schooling /whatever you want to call it in the spring? You, your SO or someone else?
My son is 11 so he did most of it on his own and I checked on his work in the evenings and weekends. My daughter is 5 and was in private pre-k and I made sure she was set up for her zooms when necessary. my husband and I both worked with her on the weekends.
2. If job duties or obligations have been effected by child care issues during this pandemic, whose job is more so effected? Yours, your SO or equally effected
I have been lucky enough to WFH this whole time and will continue to do so as long as I am able to. My husband was furloughed and took full responsibility for the kids outside of the school work.
3. With regard to schools reopening, who will have to make adjustments to their work schedule to accommodate the new school year? You, SO, neither or equally
I am still working from home and my husband is still furloughed so he will be here to help. If he gets called back to work I will WFH with the kids. If I also have to go back into the office it will not be 5 days and the days I do go in I will go in late and leave early to put my kids on and off the buses. I will NOT put them in beforecare or aftercare.
4. If your school is doing a hybrid model or you are planning on doing exclusive virtual learning or homeschooling, who will be responsible for setting your child(ren) up with the computer, signed on, engaged in the learning, etc.? You, SO , neither or equal?
My district is doing full return for k-5 so my daughter (K) will go back full time. My son is going into 6th grade which is hybrid and so he will be able to do most of it on his own and I will be home to help him when necessary.
5. What are you planning on doing for child care on "off" days?I will continue to WFH

Re: Survey for the working mothers
1. Both. My husband works a rotating schedule so he helped when he could. I probably did the majority though.
2. Mine. I’ve been working from home. My husband is a police officer so nothing changed for him.
3. Me since I’ll be home each day working.
4. Both. Depends on husbands schedule.
5. Nothing. They will have to be home with me while I work.

Survey for the working mothers
1. Who mostly handled the remote learning/home schooling /whatever you want to call it in the spring? You, your SO or someone else? Pretty much 50/50- DH is a teacher and I was able to wfh until May.
2. If job duties or obligations have been effected by child care issues during this pandemic, whose job is more so effected? Yours, your SO or equally effected Ii guess mine. DH was home but my job started to ask us to come back in for a few days a week starting in May.
3. With regard to schools reopening, who will have to make adjustments to their work schedule to accommodate the new school year? You, SO, neither or equally Me- DH has no option of any flexibility in his schedule bc he is a teacher.
4. If your school is doing a hybrid model or you are planning on doing exclusive virtual learning or homeschooling, who will be responsible for setting your child(ren) up with the computer, signed on, engaged in the learning, etc.? You, SO , neither or equal? I guess me since DH will be out of the house 100%. I also have to go into the office so we are toying with hiring a college student to help out. I may also ask to go into work later in the day when DH returns and work until 8 or 9 in the office and possibly Saturdays in exchange for a day during the week. My kids will be going on all random days and will not be in on the same days either. I may have to leave my 6th grader home alone for some part days.
5. What are you planning on doing for child care on "off" days? My mom possibly could help out a day her or there but she is still very nervous about COVID and I wouldn't want to put her in any additional risk. I also have not used any vacation days yet so I have about 4 weeks to use before the end of the year. I think I will try to use a day a week to ease the need for coverage.
