Re: suspension
Do you have a student handbook or code of discipline?
In my school we have a code of discipline that states what warrants a suspension and for how long the suspension can be for...
EtA - every school is different so you might want to check with veteran teachers or principals in your bldg

I agree. There are many factors that go into this.

Re: suspension
thanks for the responses ladies, and jamie thanks for the fm
I think a good student made a bad decision (prob being bullied) with no true intent to harm anyone, and is now suspended for the whole year.

Re: suspension
In my district- a whole year would have to be a SERIOUS infraction probably extreme violence.
Our procedure is for long term suspensions the principal and teacher must have a superintendent meeting with the parent and the child to discuss the recurrent behaviors that led up to the suspension

I agree- suspended for a YEAR- sounds extreme...we had one incident like this since I have been in my bldg - about a month left in school and a student was suspended for bringing a weapon- he was suspended for the rest of the year-

Re: suspension
Suspended for the whole YEAR? In middle school? That sounds extreme. Even if the kid brought a weapon to school, he would probably only be suspended until the case went to trial, right? But until next September? I've been teaching for 8 years, and have seen kids bring weapons, physically assault teachers, stuff like that, and have never heard of a full-year suspension in November.

Re: suspension
A whole year? Drugs/weapon possesion (not sure about a gun though)/assault on student or teacher...that's my guess.

I worked in a school where 2 kids were suspended for a year in November. One called the Sup't office and left a message that said if they didn't fire a specific teacher, he would put a bullet in her head. Totally egged on to make the call by the other kid. They were put out and finished out the year with 1 hour of tutoring per subject/per week for the remainder of the year.

Re: suspension
It is up to the superintendent, but I have seen students suspended for an entire school year for things like bringing a weapon to school, violent physical assault, etc.
