Re: SUV question - for those of you say it's not an option to get rid of your SUV

DH and I have a DC on the way. I commute about 25 miles each way to work M-F. our car is a tiny 2 door sporty thing. once I became pregnant, I felt unsafe on the highway, with all the other trucks and SUV's. anyway, we looked at all the reports and found one of the, if not "the" safest SUV, never thinking gas would be this crazy. anyway , we buy and I have it for a few months, everything is fine, but now since the gas has gone up so much, it's killing me!!!!!!!! so every day I think, hmmmm should I take the smaller car? truth be told I'm afraid to take the small car and then be involved in an accident. I am one of those who complains all the time about gas becasue I had no idea it woudl cost me this much to use my SUV every day Chat Icon

ETA: I have seen quite a few really bad accidents where both a car and an SUV are involved , that also made me lean toward SUV

I like my SUV and for me although the gas prices are $$$$$, it is not an option for me to give it up. My last car was an SUV and my next one will be as well! I feel safe in it, I can carry larger items and just plain like it. DH and I both have SUV's and we both plan to have then for a while.

I understand everyone has their own personal opinion on things, but I hate posts like these that try to make others feel bad about their choices in life and make them justify their reasons for things. Different strokes for different folks!!!Chat Icon

that was not at ALL the point of this post. I just wanted to know why ppl with SUV's don't have a choice. I think some folks clarified that for me.

also, I was not asking about compact or crossover SUV's. I was referring to the larger (Tahoe-like) SUV's

Re: SUV question - for those of you say it's not an option to get rid of your SUV

My parents had 3 kids and never owned an SUV either, but back then car seats were smaller, AND children were out of them at a much younger age...

Now children are in car seats until 4yrs I think, and booster until they are 7+

If you have 3 or more kids under the age of 5- there is no way you are fitting 3 regular size car seats in the back, and a double stroller in the trunk of a sedan.

I just have a question...an innocent one. Please don't take it the wrong way. I have always been taught that SUV's aren't any safer than any other passanger vehicle. I was wondering for those of you who responded that you felt safer in an SUV, why do you feel safer?

I did some searches online and was wondering what your responses were too.

Here are some links I found:

There were others like this, but I was looking for more recent information. No flaming or anything, I just wanted to know others perspectives. Personally, I am content in my sedan. My folks had us in car seats in a chevy malibu circa 1970-something (obviously we didn't have to stay in them for as long). I will probably get more of a mid-sized car when we have kids, but I don't ever see myself driving an SUV. Also, why would you have to go into a $500 payment for a new car? I bought my car new and pay little over $200. Just askingChat Icon

I understand what you're saying and FTR I don't personally understand the "safety theory" or why when people become PG they run out and get an SUV. I've always thought if you've been driving all this time in a regular sedan without having an accident, why, now that your PG or have a child do you think you are more suseptable to getting in an accident?

As for your links... I think in all fairness, studies can be conducted to prove anyones point. You just happened to find some that say SUVs are not safer.

As I said earlier, I don't drive my SUV for safety; for us it's basically a necessity.

Re: SUV question - for those of you say it's not an option to get rid of your SUV

I also grew up in the stationwagon/pre-carseat generation and did just fine. Nothing could ever bear a Buick Estate Wagon fit for my family of six.

People drive a lot more carelessly than they did years back. Cars were also made better back then. I drive a CR-V. DH drives a convertible Sebring. I feel much safer in his car. It is a much heavier (and more powerful) car with a lower center of gravity and I would rather use that in the snow or rain than a small SUV.

ETA: Whwn we buy our next new car, it will not be another SUV. It will be a large sedan.

I think its funny that everyone complains about people buying SUVs until they
*need a ride from the airport with their luggage
*have to go to home depot to pick something up
*are planning a huge shopping trip to BJs or Costco
*have to transport something large
*have to move
*need a ride somewhere in the snow

DH works ten blocks away and barely leaves the neighborhood UNLESS one of our family members or friends asks for a "quick favor"

What would they do without us Chat Icon

Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

ITA. I can't tell you how many phone calls we get from our friends who don't have SUVs asking us to help them out with the above examples. My SUV has gotten over the years a mid size fridge in it, a love seat, a huge mirror, a 50 something inch tv, air conditioners, 2 recliner chairs, etc all because my friends and family drive small cars and don't want to pay a delivery or moving expense. I'm not complaining because I don't mind helping out but I agree with you that people who don't have SUVs complain about them being gas guzzlers and yet many of those same people would not hesitate to call me for help to save $50 on a delivery fee.

To be honest I will never stop driving one. I don't have kids yet, so that is not my reason. I just enjoy driving it. It feels safer to me.

Same here. I refuse to give up my SUV. I just got rid of my car after only having it for 2 years so it was still pretty new, just because i wanted an SUV. I don't think i can ever go back ro driving a car. Maybe next i will get a hybrid truck. Who knows.

I feel much safer bc like I said in my OP, I've witnessed a lot of major accidents w/ car Vs. SUV(since my commute is pretty long) and the cars are always demolished/totalled and the bigger trucks barely have any damage. Another thing, if god forbid my little car were rearended by a big car or SUV, noone is back there right now, so I only have to worry about me. When my little one comes along he will be much better protected in my SUV if that were to god forbid happen. it's not about being more susceptible to an accident bc it can happen at any time, it's about keeping my little passenger as safe as possible

I

I didn't buy my truck for safety reasons...I've been in very few accidents.
But, I have to say that a man rearended me two years ago and he was doing 40-50 mph, didn't brake till the last second and hit me HARD. I saw him coming and kept my foot on the brake in order to not hit the car in front of me. Not only did I not hit the car, the back end of my truck was fairly crumpled (he did $12,000 worth of damage) and I was fine.
So there is something to be said for the safety of SUV's. If I were in my old car, I know the situation would have been much worse.

I have 2 cars

1 is a mustang-

1 is a SUV

my DH got into the same type of accident in both cars

he rear ended someone

my SUV- no damage- besides needing a new Lic. Plate holder

mustang- flatbeded to the body shop- easily with $5K + worth of damage

luckily he was fine- but I feel better when he is driving my SUV

Re: SUV question - for those of you say it's not an option to get rid of your SUV

I dont have an SUV so I cant answer really and I never will have one becaus eof personal choices ...But I do WANT one...
I love the style, I love all the aspects of it, I am just more global conscious.

this is gonna get me flamed but I think everyday people with kids, jobs, hectic lives dont sit down, dont have the TIME to sit down, do research on Global issues with SUVS, with emissions, With gas issues.

If they did, their would be more people changing over.

Till then, I think SUV's will still be a way of life for many and I understand it based on the responses of many.

Hybrid SUV's are outta control price wise ...

I applaud anyone who switches from one, but I do understand those who dont.

well alright then - I can agree with that logic

Why can't you sell the SUV and get a good used car with better mileage that would also be paid off? Why does it have to be a new car?

And honestly....why does she have to justify to you what her reasons are? She likes her SUV, for whatever her reason, and that's her perrogative!Chat Icon

She doesn't. I think he was just asking a "General You" question. Not to anyone in particular.

Maybe the people that have SUVs and don't want to change have them paid off and don't want to be strapped with a new car payment.

I can guarantee the difference in the cost of gas between a 15MPG SUV and a 30MPG sedan won't even come close to the difference in cost you would have with buying a new car (between a new car loan principal, interest, and insurance).

I actually crunched the numbers with my boss the other day. Going from a 17MPG vechicle to a 30MPG vechicle (and driving about 17k miles a year) saves you about $100 a month in gas.

That's not enough savings for me to be strapped with a new $500 car payment, and a $50 a month increase in insurance for insuring a newer car.

And on the other hand, maybe the people that are in the middle of loans would take too much of a hit selling it. Either negative equity or breaking even. It's a bad financial move.

well alright then - I can agree with that logic

She doesn't have to justify anything to me. I was just offering another solution to those with SUV's who are having trouble affording the gas these days. Relax.

I have a small SUV, a Honda CR-V. It has a 4 cylinder engine and doesn't cost as much as some of the others to gas up. I won't ever go back to a car though because of back problems. I simply have too much trouble getting in and out of a smaller, lower car. Also, to do that with a carseat now-forget it.

It seemed more of a critisim of people who drove SUV's than wanting to assist them to save money on their gas.

I think that was the point of the whole thread.

I'm still not giving up the SUV.
As far as selling my truck and buying a used car - NO thank you!
I bought two used cars and they did nothing but cost me money - and lot's of it.
My last two cars were purchased brand new and guess what? I've had NO mechanical problems on either...just basic maintenance. My Celica had 140,000 miles when I sold it (all original) and my truck now has 140,000 miles and I plan on keeping it for quite some time.Chat Icon

Why not call out people using chemical fertilizers? Chemical Cleaners? Oil heat?
There a millions of people in this country and unless MAJOR changes occur a few more or less SUV's aren't going to do much.

Re: SUV question - for those of you say it's not an option to get rid of your SUV

I have an SUV, a ford explorer, my FH bought it while we were dating and used it for a while for work until he got a work van.

Now i have been driving it for a couple years now. I cant imagine not having it. The amount of stuff i have had to haul it in the past year is crazy, right now i have a toilet and sinks in the back.

I am sure we are not keeping it forever. but it really comes in handy.

i have an SUV and plan to keep and buy another this summer. purchasing a smaller or hybrid vehicle is (OF COURSE) an option but not my personal preference or personal choice. some may view the decision as stupid and nonsensical but again, it is my choice, my decision.

I read this as the OP just ASKING a question because she was curious. People have answered her question. I don’t get the defensiveness from the SUV owners. Many people have valid reasons for having an SUV, and many SUV owners don’t complain about the price of gas. If that’s the case then the question wasn’t directed at you. I took it as a question to someone who has a Hummer for no particular reason other than that they like it, that keeps complaining about the gas it uses.

I do have to say, though, the ‘safer’ reason is not a great reason UNLESS you’ve taken the time to research your particular vehicle. Some SUVs are not as safe as you think. Some cars are safer than you think.

I have a small car, I don’t complain about the price of gas, nor do I complain if I can’t fit something in it, and I do not ask someone with an SUV to help me.

Everyone should make informed decisions that fit their lifestyle.

Basically for us its a vicious cycle.

Why should I feel less safe on the road in a small car when there are so many suv's out there? Until they are ALL GONE..I will drive a suv to protect me from the other suvs..if that makes any sense at all?

Agreed! And for my situation, I also have a small car, don't complain about gas (it gets 31 mpg, so how can I?) and I never borrow anyone's SUV to transport stuff. Actually the ONE time we couldn't fit anything in my car, we bought 3 huge pallets of hardwood flooring (the place didn't deliver), we rented a truck from Home Depot for $20.
