swimmers - 18 yard pool too small?
I'm considering joining a new gym with a pool -- and I'm only joining for the pool. The pool I like best is too far from my house for me to go regularly. The new one is right by my office.
The new pool is only 18 yards long, and I'd be going only for lap swimming. Is that way too short or doable? I'm used to swimming in a 25+ yard pool.
Thoughts?

It's short, not going to lie but it's totally doable.
I would still swim in it and I do laps too.

OMG, I just did the math and it's more than 90 laps per mile. Ought to be interesting, but I guess it's better than not ever getting to my regular pool to swim (and getting fatter).

no flip turns for you.
I actually like a shorter pool for backstroke..

Definitely no flip turns and I guess no pushing off the wall. I'll hardly get any exercise that way!

Stupid question that DH and I fight about.
Is a 'lap' the distance of the pool - or the distance of the pool and back to the start?
Signed, Just learned how to swim 3 weeks ago and don't know the lingo.

by the time you push off the wall you'll be 3/4 of the way there.

Re: swimmers - 18 yard pool too small?
Technically, a length is one way down the pool and a lap is two lengths (down and back).
In my head, though, I count each length of the pool as one lap. People use the term to mean both, but some swimmers are picky.
My post should have said 90+ lengths = 1 mile in an 18 yard pool.

This is what I'm afraid of... b/c the membership isn't cheap!
Then I looked at other gyms and their pools are only 14 yards. I hope those are for aquasizing only!

Re: swimmers - 18 yard pool too small?
It's not that far, and could get annoying if you want to do a lot of laps. But, I am all for finding a gym near your home or work--I always found I used them more when that was the case, if I had to go out of my way at all, it was too easy to blow off.
No easy answer. I would probably join the shorter pool, though a longer one would be better no doubt.

Re: swimmers - 18 yard pool too small?
One major thing I'd be looking at is if it has lane lines, or at least lines on the bottom of the pool. I think a lot of health clubs are too small. Mine is around that length too. But if they didn't have lane lines, I'd be getting real angry as someone is doing elementary backstroke crooked and running into me. I am a b!tch when people don't know pool etiquette.

Not sure where you live - but check if the neighboring school districts have a pool in one of the schools.
I am lucky that our school district has a pool and they open it up every night during the week for 1 dollar admittance a person.

Re: swimmers - 18 yard pool too small?
To me it sounds really short, but I have only done laps in 50 meter pools. I think 25m would be fine, but 18 by the time you come out of your turn you are almost to the other end.

Ooh, this would be perfect. I'm looking at getting a Passport membership to NYSC -- so I can go to the one in the city with a pool and also any other club. EM is close enough that could be my "home" pool.
