Swine flu question - "underlying health condition"

I notice that pretty much everytime I read an article about someone dying from swine flu it mentions that they had an underlying health condition.

What type of conditions do you think these people have?

Re: Swine flu question - "underlying health condition"

I have seen everything from being mildly overweight and mild asthma as well as pregnancy all considered underlying health conditions.

They may also have autoimmune disorders like Lupus or be treating illnesses like cancer which leave them highly vulnerable.

DH works in the ICU of a major LI hospital, and they had several patients in for swine flu in the spring. To be admitted to the ICU, the person would have to be extremely sick he agreed that yes, they all had "underlying health conditions." I remember he said that one of them had AIDS, and that most others were overweight.

i have an autoimmune disorder so I worry about this for myself. I have a low platelet count so I wonder if that would count as "underlying" I am going to ask my hematologist on thurs at my reg appt.

mildly overweight

I always think this one is in there just as a fallback for them, considering 60-70% of the population is considered overweight?

Yes, this is DH and me unfortunately. Not sure we could vaccinate either--so far it sounds as if its only going to be offered to people younger than us.

But I would assume these things asthma, diabetes, pregnancy, anything that depresses your immune system basically.

I would say anyone with an autoimmune disease, pregnancy (b/c it lowers your immune system), asthma, being overweight, smokers, people with diabetes.
