Swollen, sore eyelid?
What kind of doctor do I need to see?
My eye is completely fine. My eyelid is really swollen, red and sore. I was thinking pollen got under my eyelid, spider bite, etc.? I woke up yesterday morning with it swollen. Today it's worse.
Can a primary care doc handle this or do I need to go to an eye doctor or urgent care? Trying to save money on a copay, but don't want to pay one copay to only be sent to a specialist anyway?

Re: Swollen, sore eyelid?
sounds like maybe you have a stye. i had one a couple weeks ago (albeit a little one on my lashline) and was told to try putting a warm compress on it throughout the day.

Re: Swollen, sore eyelid?
That's a stye I am pretty sure.I have had many of them.
Go to the drugstore and buy a OTC cream called STYE. Also use warm compresses and it should go away. It's basically a pimple, infection in the eyelash gland area.

Re: Swollen, sore eyelid?
It does sound liike a stye.. however I had similar symptoms and it ended up being an infection in my eye lid.
If warm compresses don't help, I'd see your doctor (Primary care should be OK... I just went to my eye dr since my co-pay was the same).

Re: Swollen, sore eyelid?
I'm not sure about it being a stye? I've had several of them as well and they were on the eye lash area and definitely not this swollen? This is mainly sore in a certain spot and well above my eye lash line? It's my whole eyelid that's swollen not just the particular area? I was thinking stye at first too but now I'm not sure?
Copays:
Primary - $20 Specialist - $45 Urgent care - $35

Re: Swollen, sore eyelid?
I had something similar about 5 years ago. My eye lid was swollen red and painful. My eyeball was perfectly fine. I started at my primary who sent me to dermatology who sent me to the optomologist who sent me to rhuematology. Turned out it was a reaction to the sun from an autoimmune disorder I have. Yes mine is a very rare case lol but I would start with primary and see what s/he he says. It was an expensive journey but I did get answers. I ended up with a topical rx ointment that cleared it right up.

Re: Swollen, sore eyelid?
Chances are it's a stye. More annoying than anything else, really. I agree with the warm compress. They clear up on their own but that should take some of the swelling down.

Re: Swollen, sore eyelid?
No, I haven't. Maybe I should? My DH also wants me to try the primary care doc first. Thanks!

Re: Swollen, sore eyelid?
Try a warm (as warm as you can manage) tea bag on the eye. Repeat it a few times and if it's a stye, that shoudl do teh trick.

Re: Swollen, sore eyelid?
My DH had the same thing in October and it wound up being MRSA. We couldn't believe it. He got meds from the doctor and he was fine in two days.

Re: Swollen, sore eyelid?
I get this a lot from allergy. I have prescription drops that help somewhat but I also use the night time mineral oil creams (OTC) and I take Benadryl when it is bad. You should rule out any infection, though.
