WOW...our school's marching band went to Disney to play, but it was through fundraising, and if they didnt raise enough, they paid their own way.

I saw this story too this morning. Honestly, senior class trips (while fun and a great memory) should NOT be funded by the school. The seniors and their families should have to foot the bill and to offset costs, they should do fundraising throughout the year. If this type of trip is too costly then they should revamp the trip and go somewhere more cost effective. My senior class trip was in the Poconos at the Mt. Airy Lodge. lol Cheesy but cheap. That is such bullshyt and I'd be furious! Our taxes keep going up and up - and so they can send these kids to DISNEY?
It's not even like it's an educational trip. It's Disney.
OMG that is horseshit

It's nuts...there are people who work hard and cant afford their own vacations, yet their tax money is being used so a bunch of high schoolers can have a last hurrah. I think the superintendent and that lawyer should both be fired and made to pay back the taxpayers. Its stealing from the hard working citizens for sure.

Wow - our district does a Disney trip but, I believe it's 100% family funded.

I don't remember my school district even had a school sponsored senior trip Chat Icon Chat Icon

why would the school pay for any of it or even sponsor one?

I don't know how I feel about this.

I feel bad for the kids that can't afford to go on trips that the school doesn't pay for. I would've been one of them and my daughter was one of them. We didn't have the funds for this. So for the school to pay it doesn't leave anyone out.

BUT Disney? Seriously. Find something more affordable!

ETS: The kids should do fund raising through out the year to offset some of the cost.
I just don't like the idea of some kids going and kids that can't afford it are left out.

Same with us. I remember having to pay my own way (after fundraising whatever I could).

Total BS, and I can tell you, many parents are NOT happy about that in their district. Especially parents who are having to fight for services for their children.

SWR School District spends $153k on senior trip

Wow that is crazy. Our district doesn't pay for any field trips. They are either fund-raised for or payed by the parent. In this day and age with districts cutting programs left and right that is financially irresponsible for them to fund this trip. Let alone the insurance nightmare the district is incurring flying the students out on their dime. I would be pissed if I lived there.

Oh wow. That's crazy!!
I'd be really POed. I wonder what happens here for senior trips? Never imagined any district would spend that amount of $ on a senior trip. Especially when they are always saying they will need to cut programs, etc because of budget.

Curious to see how this all goes

Things like this infuriate me. A lot of the families in this area are well off and these kids have probably been to Disney multiple times already, so any educational value they are spouting is nonsense. There is no reason for the district to fund something like this.

Totally.

I'd much rather see the obviously extra $$ they have to go toward programs to help students and families in need.

Sorry, but I find this and any "class trip" that is so excessive that it will definitely leave out a large part of the class to be pretty obnoxious. If it's truly a class trip, it should be something that can easily be paid for by fundraising with maybe a small contribution from the family. Maybe where you went to school this was an affordable trip for most kids, but I know that there would have been no way I would have been able to go on such a trip in HS. To really be a class trip, most of the class should be able to go with no hardship

OMG right? I haven't even been to Hawaii at 43. No way in HELL would my DD be going there on a class trip. We could probably "afford" it, technically but I would not be spending that kind of dime for her to go with her class. I'd be going with her!

Our last "hurrah" was the senior prom. The next day a lot of us went to Great Adventure. It was not that expensive and we all had a great time. No airfare and no hotels to worry about. What's so wrong with that?

WOW, did not expect to get attacked, especially by you two ladies. I never even said I went, I was just stating a fact that that is where the senior class trip was and that if people wanted to go they paid for it themselves, the school didn't fund it. That's all.
