My senior class trip was to Hawaii, but that was 100% student ( family) funded. I can't believe a district would pay for this!

Sorry, but I find this and any "class trip" that is so excessive that it will definitely leave out a large part of the class to be pretty obnoxious. If it's truly a class trip, it should be something that can easily be paid for by fundraising with maybe a small contribution from the family. Maybe where you went to school this was an affordable trip for most kids, but I know that there would have been no way I would have been able to go on such a trip in HS. To really be a class trip, most of the class should be able to go with no hardship

OMG right? I haven't even been to Hawaii at 43. No way in HELL would my DD be going there on a class trip. We could probably "afford" it, technically but I would not be spending that kind of dime for her to go with her class. I'd be going with her!

WOW, did not expect to get attacked, especially by you two ladies. I never even said I went, I was just stating a fact that that is where the senior class trip was and that if people wanted to go they paid for it themselves, the school didn't fund it. That's all.

I wasn't attacking you even a little.
I was making a comment about a trip like that in general and how it was a bit much. And I came from a district that was over the top extravagant and where everyone (except me it seems Chat Icon) had a ton of money.
I was attacking the concept of a Senior trip to Hawaii- not you.

I wasn't attacking you at all - sorry if it cam across that way. I was shocked that any school district would plan such a trip - one that in my world would have been way beyond reach for many many students, but probably doable for a handful of kids in my HS class. If that's the school trip and some kids go, it's not the kids who are obnoxious, it's the school district. Sorry if you thought I was attacking YOU personally

SWR School District spends $153k on senior trip

We had class trips, but they were to like Washington DC and Boston. And we fund-raised for them. Geesh!

Our last "hurrah" was the senior prom. The next day a lot of us went to Great Adventure. It was not that expensive and we all had a great time. No airfare and no hotels to worry about. What's so wrong with that?

same here

That's what ours was but, we went to Montauk... A lot of schools in my area do senior trips. Our district does Disney (school sponsored and chaperoned) but, one of the ones next to us - the kids go to the Bahamas right after graduation, unchaperoned.

Wasn't that what happened when Natalee Holloway went missing? It was a class trip to Aruba right?

JFC..whatever happened to taking a bus down to DC or something.

I *Think* the seniors did a ski trip in the winter, but I wasnt even allowed to go. I dont recall if that was the "senior trip" or if other grades went too. I just remember my father was like "no f**king way."

and that was fundraised or paid for by the students/parents.

Wouldn't this kind of spending need to be voted on at a BOE meeting? I can't believe something like this passed!

I can't read the whole story but I think that something might be missing. The school had a couple of very public tragedies and may have had grant or money specifically earmarked for the trip. I know in our district, the PTA grants money to the board with ear markings such as trips and clubs and may be something like that is why the trip was funded.

This is insanity! Why on earth should tax payers pay for kids to go to Disney? I would be voting down that budget!

Unfortunately, there was no special grant or anything. According to the article, a district lawyer was misreading a state law and interpreted that the trip to Disney was technically an educational trip and therefore the district was required to pay for most of the trip. Students paid $200 each and the rest of the money was reallocated from an employees benefit account.

The lawyer, the superintendent who moved ahead with the decision and the Trustees who allocated the funds should all be fired for this eff-up.

The article also says the budget up for a vote now includes $40k for the same trip next year...

What I want to know is how running around an adult playground with a mouse and riding glorified carnival rides is considered even remotely "educational"???Chat Icon
I could see a trip to Europe to see history, culture and art, etc.
Not to Disney. Not even close.

SWR School District spends $153k on senior trip

UNBELIEVABLE!!! What infuriates me is how the school districts fight off and nickel and dime the parents of students with disabilities because of money and barely use assistive technology (and if they do it's usually outdated) but six figures for this. It makes me want to puke.

Unchaperoned is not school sponsored.

EPCOT's World Pavilion... it's exactly the same as travelling around the world...
and the Animal Kingdom is just like visiting the jungles of Asia and Africa...

(Honestly, this was basically the explanation they used...)

My senior trip was to the Bahamas. It was 100% funded by families. The school did NOT sponsor or even endorse it. Oh man, what a fun week of debauchery Chat Icon Ahhh, I miss those days.

ETA: It was booked through some outside company

We also had a ski trip...I *think* that one was school sponsored.

Re: SWR School District spends $153k on senior trip

I think EPCOT is a ton of fun - I've been there numerous times.

I also probably have been to 2/3 of the countries represented. As in the actual countries.

While there are some exhibits, displays, and food offerings that are authentic, it's not the same as being at any of those places.

Not even close.

I'd be pretty pissed if I were a taxpayer in that town.
