Tacky or not? your thoughts....
throwing yourself a b-day party and sending an evite out to a lot of people - tacky or not?
PS: the evite does not say "no gifts please".

I kept going back and forth but I finally voted for Not Tacky. I dont think someone else has to throw you a birthday party. Its your birthday and if you want to get together with friends and have a party I say PARTY ON!!!

I agree. I dont look at a bday party as a ploy for gifts- just a reason to want to GTG with your friends to party and celebrate.

Re: Tacky or not? your thoughts....
not tacky. I've never done it but wouldn't be opposed to someone throwing a little something at a bar or something like that. If it's an adult, I most likely would NOT bring a gift unless it was a surprise party or something. I don't know why, but that's what I've done in the past.

Re: Tacky or not? your thoughts....
DH and I have a bday one day apart. One year we wanted to go out with friends to a restaurant and bar/dancing etc... we sent out an evite...we did not mention no gifts, because honestly, we were not expecting gifts- we wanted to go out and have fun with our friends and an evite was an easy way to let everyone know the details and keep track of the responses-
some people brought gifts- most did not-but we sure did have a good time! So, I vote Not Tacky

I 100% agree, I have done an evite, more just to get everyone together, at this age, unless less its a big birthday, I don't give gifts, and I would never expect them.

Re: Tacky or not? your thoughts....
I have done it and so do all my friends. It never occurred to me that it could be considered tacky. I never expected gifts (and never got any), even though I never put "no gifts" on the evite, it never ocurred to me that I needed to. They were house parties that would move onto a club. I invited my friends (not strangers), and it was fine.

i don't see anything wrong with it---cause reallly as we get older we don't expect others to throw huge parties for our bdays, cause well ppl have busy lives.
my sister did the same thing--did an evite and threw herself a party....might as well! besides i'd rather do the work myself and make sure its done right than have to worry about someone else bearing the brunt of the work and stressing.

didn't read all the replies but emily post would say its ok. Its NEVER ok to mention gifts in anyway on an invitation. Even though we all get shower invitations with registry info or even requests to wrap in clear paper that is technically against etiquette rules. we just attended a 40th that my very good friend through for herself. She's single & is a three time cancer survivor, every birthday is precious, it was my pleasure to buy her a birthday gift. I think its fine.

My friend as done it a bunch of times, and I never found it to be tacky. I have planned my own birthday get-togethers, but I never used evite.

Re: Tacky or not? your thoughts....
I think aside for showers, there are very few adult events where a gift is expected. In the case of birthday parties for adults the default is no gift so it doesn't need to be stated explicitly. So I vote not tacky.

um, who gives a crap if it says no gifts or not.
why do you have to wait for someone else to celebrate YOUR birthday.
if you think it's tacky, most likely you are boring anyway. DON'T GO.
ugh...so effing judgmental.
who are you or anyone else to judge what is "tacky". I HATE this word.
this is something that REALLY ticks me off.

I don't see anything wrong with getting friends together to celebrate.
I don't think the invite should say "no gifts" that actually makes me think the birthday person was expecting them even though they are saying they don't want them.

Re: Tacky or not? your thoughts....
I don't think it's tacky at all. My friends often throw themselves birthday parties at bars and send out e-vites to a bunch of people. Sometimes they pay for an open bar and sometimes it's a cash bar. They don't expect gifts. It never even crossed my mind that this could be considered tacky.
