Talk to me about floor tiles for the kitchen?
we are renovating our kitchen...and I have no idea about tile flooring...ceramic, porcelin, natural stone...what is best, more durable, easy to maintian...give me some pros and cons please...
also, a recomendation for a place to buy would be great!! I saw something I liked for 7.99 per square foot, but not sure how that compares...

Re: Talk to me about floor tiles for the kitchen?
I LOVE our tiles!!! we have really big ceramic tiles (I think 16x16) accented with smaller ones (6x6?). We bought them from Benson Tile on Woodhaven Blvd in Queens. I think they were between $5-$6 per square foot? We have a large kitchen and I think we paid around $900 for them (and we have quite a few tiles left over). Sorry I can't remember any exact $ amounts since we redid the kitchen about 2 years ago.
here's a pic, if you like them let me know, I have the name written down somewhere.
eta: just wanted to mention, these tiles had uneven edges and I really liked how natural they looked with the grout filling it in.....to me the less grout the better, hence the big tiles!

We're currently thinking of putting bamboo flooring in the diningroom/kitchen. It's some of the hardest stuff out there, but is still easier on falling plates and cups.

Re: Talk to me about floor tiles for the kitchen?
We have large ceramic tiles in our kitchen and bathrooms, along with the hallways.
I clean them with white vinegar and steaming hot water.
I've dropped nearly everything on them and they have never cracked.
They were newly installed when we bought the house by the flipper, so I have no idea where he got them, but they are ceramic. He left us extra tiles in case we would ever need them.

Re: Talk to me about floor tiles for the kitchen?
We are using a porcelain tile that looks like slate/stone. I didn't like the way stone felt on my feet and I am always barefoot at home, so we went with the porcelain. Ours were $5.50/sqft and we got them in Queens at a place called Tutto Casa.

We also used 2 sizes of ceramic tile. We also laid radiant heating below the tile, so it is nice and warm in winter but very cool in summer.
I don't think I have a pic of JUST the floor. We got the tile on Merrick Rd in Wantagh. Not too $$$. I can look up the info if you are interested, just let me know.

We just had wood installed--biggest mistake!
I think if we were to do it over, it would be stone.

we have spanish mable tiles and LOVE THEM. I don't know where they are from because they come with the house. The color is good and bad, good cause it hides dirt, bad, cause it hides dirt

We have ceramic tiles. One was cracked by the previous homeowner. But in general, they are very durable, and we've dropped many things on them.
I wash them with ammonia and water.

Can I ask why it was a mistake?

Re: Talk to me about floor tiles for the kitchen?
We have ceramic tile (came with the house - not sure what we'd choose if we had to do it over again!). Keep in mind when choosing tile, mopping will be easier if the surface of the tile is completely flat.

I originally wanted wood floors too, but now that I have real wood floors through the rest of the entire house, I am SO glad they are not wood in the kitchen. Wood scratches and your kitchen has a lot of traffic and wear.
