Tanning Question

If you were going on vacation to a place where the sun is VERY strong would you go tanning before you left?

I tend to burn a little at first.

I'm so back and forth because tanning is so bad for you but I don't want to wind up like a lobster next week!

Re: Tanning Question

I wouldn't.

I've never gone tanning before though!

We went to Tahiti, Moorea, and Bora Bora for our HM and of course the sun was really strong there. I wore heavy SPF every day and came back nice and tan (and not burnt!)

Re: Tanning Question

No no no don't go tanning. Pack two sunscreens, one for the first couple days until you have a decent base and then one with less SPF so you can maintain the tan.

Re: Tanning Question

You don't have to- when DH and I go to Aruba ( which is very strong sun-wise!)
We just slather on the 45 spf the first 3 days and stay under the shade during the strongest sun hours.... then we downgrade to 30 spf the rest and can stay out in the sun all day... just always reapply!!!

Ditto on everything she said except swap Tahiti for ThailandChat Icon I never tan and always use sunscreen but in a climate like that you are gonna get a bit brown even with sp50 on.

Re: Tanning Question

I wouldn't only because I am so scared of what tanning beds can do to your skin. (I used to go now and then back in college and now I regret doing it at all.)
Best advice is to start off with a higher SPF than you normally use to avoid burning ... I think that's the safer bet.

I tend to burn a little at first.

I'm so back and forth because tanning is so bad for you but I don't want to wind up like a lobster next week!

I would advise against tanning in any way, shape or form.
Use a very good sunscreen with Zinc and Titanium (Cotz sells an excellent one, developed by a dermatologist...it doesn't make you white either, it has flesh colored tint in it, so when you put it on, you actually look good!)
There's also a fantastic sunscreen that has these elements by Colorscience...it's in a powder form, and you can get clear, or flesh color, etc. This can go on top of your make up, etc, and can be reapplied a lot without getting cakey. My dermatologist used it in Hawaii while surfing all day, and it worked, she didn't get burned or "tan".

I have had three basal cell carcinomas (all diagnosed in the past 7 months) One of the basal cells was a rare and very invasive form that infiltrated around my nerve. I had an extensive MOHS surgery and needed a skin flap.

After many extensive laser treatments for the scars, you can't really see it at all.

Bad news....I go for MOHS surgery #3 in a few weeks to remove a tiny basal cell carcinoma.

Today, I met my DS's speech pathologist, and she's only 40 (I'm 32 BTW), and she was diagnosed with Stage 4 Melanoma six months ago. She had a huge chunk of her leg removed.

It's just not worth it.

Thanks for the wake up call! You just made up my mind. No tanning!

I'm so sorry to hear what you've been through! Chat Icon I will keep you in my thoughts. Best of luck with your upcoming surgery.
