...but you don't have to send in your contract of sale with your tax return.....

So how do they know when you signed the contract.

that is easy enough to find out- Please don't encourage people to commit fraud!

they will be checking b/c fraud has become very common

if people didn't commit fraud maybe the government could have continued it!

That was uncalled for.

what is uncalled for? not breaking the law? I am confused?

nothing I said was uncalled for- committing fraud is!

when people comimt fraud - guess who pays for it...the tax payers! us!

She asked a question and you accused her of telling people to commit fraud. I never saw anywhere in the post where she encouraged people to do something illegal.

[!

It was uncalled for...bc I didn't encourage anyone to commit fraud like you accused me of trying to do, but I guess my response above goes out the window.

I read your post as suggesting people apply for the tax credit even if they closed after June 30th

I didn't say it in a rude way at all- but anyone could read your post an attempt it- this is the internet and I felt as a State Lic Realtor is my place to call it out as being fraud- cause it is!

I was chatting with an accountant at the bagel store 2 weeks ago and he told he was going to do that- so I declined to show him houses b/c I don't want my name associated with fraud

there is alot of tax credit fraud out there and I hope they catch every single person!

Re: Tax Refund Extended..not FAIR!

We closed in April but didn't qualify as first time since we bought a co-op even though we lost Monet selling it. Didn't qualify as second time since we didn't live in the co-op long enough. The money didn't make or break but it would helped. Any little bit helps when buying a home, especially since I just had DD!

that is what they said all along, they were extending it, but only for those who already met the April 30th deadline. There was never talk about extending it for those who went into contract after April 30th...

Correct

yes and theonly reason they extended it is because they didnt have time to get everyone closed by the 30th so things were taking way to long

Question or not, there are people out there that do this and will do this. I don't feel what she wrote was uncalled for or attacking the OP.

I completely agree! I am sick to death of people in this country taking advantage and I hope they get them all and impose major penalties!

ITA! And I was mad that I wasn't eligible because I owned a co-op. That shouldn't have discounted my DH!

Just read the whole thread -

I just attended an IRS seminar on this

FYI, you must sumbit all of the appropriate paperwork and proof of eligibility - if everything isn't in order, they're going to ask you for it - especially something as obvious as that !!

Unless you give it to every taxpayer, these programs are always "unfair" to someone. It's got to stop somewhere...

I agree. I have personally been against the whole tax refund from the beginning. People are losing jobs left and right but we are going to give people $8k to buy a house? Chat Icon

I think everyone buying should have gotten it. the point of it was to stimulate the housing market, so why not give it to everyone?

I also think that Obama should do something about all the loans that Bush gave out. He should turn them into the free money everyone else got just a year later, because I think when the 2010 taxes are filed in 2011 they have to begin paying it back

And lastly, to the OP I understand it stinks, but it has always been that you had to be in contract since april 30. no one ever even mentioned extending the in contract date

For this reason I went to a professional accountant. We amended our return. We had to show our prior year's return and a copy of the HUD- settlement from our closing. The accountant did tell me people were doing fraudulent things like selling selling houses to family to get the credit/making things up etc. So he said it could take a good 3 months before we get the money. They are taking a close look at everything....

I was thinking the same thing. We bought a home, with no refund and now its worth less than what we bought it for bc of irresponsible lenders and homebuyers. So we couldnt even take advantage of the break if we WANTED too bc Im stuck here.

in the grand scheme of things- $8k is hardly a reason to buy a house on LI

I agree 100%.

We were in contract by April 30 and closed before June 30 - just before June 30th.

NOTHING would have made us buy a house on LI or anywhere else if it wasn't right for us for the sake of 8k. If 8k was going to break us, then I think we would have had NO business buying a house. I needed to have a lot more in the bank AFTER closing to feel safe.

Amen to that! We can't even take advantage of the lower rates now (we are currently at 5.875%!) because we don't have enough equity in the house even though we put down MORE than 20% AND paid off 30K!
