Taxes

We're in the process of looking for a house and refuse to look at anything 9k +. Obviously that seriously limits us to area and price point- but I absolutely refuse to pay that much money in taxes alone. For what? Roads with potholes and ****** kept parks and other public spaces- no thanks...

Re: Taxes

Taxes on Long Island are completely out of control, particularly since a bulk of the taxes are school taxes and very little of the school taxes actually goes to YOUR school district (it is redistributed throughout NY State). In my opinion, not sure why people are willing to pay 2-3 times more in taxes to live in areas in certain "good" school districts, especially now that we have common core and "everybody is the same." I think it's about how much we'll be paying if we go with new construction. It's a lot.
There are houses we don't even look at if the taxes are too high. I don't want that huge bill in retirement.

Not just you, it's insane. We pay 11k, which isn't that bad for LI, but we hate where we live.

Are you in Bellmore? You've said this several times, why do you hate where you live? I also moved here from Queens and love it. I dont miss the awful parking situation in Queens every time I visit my parents.

Our taxes are almost $ 16K which is def insane, but we live on a 130 x 80 lot on dead end street so I guess maybe thats why. LI taxes are among the highest in the nation, I am sure Westchester and NJ isnt much better. Chat Icon

We pay close to $14K now in Massapequa Park although we won our grievance and now it should go down to $9K. Still high if you ask me...

It's crazy but when we were house hunting the taxes in NJ were just as high and you don't get a star credit.

Definitely NOT ok-I refused to even consider properties with taxes that high- You also have to take into consideration the size of the home and amount of land when you talk about taxes--my house is small (~1600 square feet) on about 7000 square feet of land and my taxes are about $8,500--not crazy but still a lot--we are in White Plains one block away from the village of Scarsdale and our taxes are less than half of what some of our neighbor's pay for simlar properties. Dh and I laugh because you can see where the neighborhood switches from White Plains to Scarsdale in the winter when there is snow because the roads are always cleared better on the White Plains side of the line. It depends on what is important to you--a top school district and private pool come with a high price tag.

Nearby. I don't miss the parking situation either. Our commute is really awful, we have very rude neighbors, we lose power like once a week. We're also far from our families and all our friends, which is hard. But the commute really is the killer.

I have to admit that I was visiting my parents in Queens last weekend and was walking down one of the busier streets and commented to DH on how horribly congested it's gotten since we left and he said "No, it hasn't gotten this way, it's always been this way you just never knew anything else." And he was right. And I was kind of happy to get back to LI......I can't believe I just typed that Chat Icon

Also, Westchester is significantly worse tax wise- that's where we originally wanted to move but couldn't afford the taxes- the house DH lived in as a child was on the market- taxes were 30k!

It's actually not just top-ranked school districts that have high taxes. I can think of several school districts that not ranked the highest according to measures like Newsday rankings or Great School ratings that have signijficantly higher school taxes than neighboring districts that are higher ranked.

On an unrelated note, taxes are high in most areas of LI but they get crazy if you are adding taxes for an incorporated village (like RVC or Garden City) on top of the general and school taxes, it gets unaffordable for most people (even if they can afford the price of the homes in that area).

New construction and waterfront homes also are where you see $20K +.

The taxes are out of control. We wanted to upgrade but the tax bill is not worth it to us. We pay over 13k per year which is quite low for our town. We grieve every single year. If not , our taxes would be 16k!!

How big is their house and how much property do they have? My guess is it not you average three to four bedroom house in 1/4 of an acre of land.
