How would you feel if your child's teacher told the entire class that if they didn't behave they would make the social studies test so hard that everyone would fail?

Teachers please feel free to chime in. Curious to hear opinions.

*update - the test was scheduled for Friday (tomorrow)
They walked into class today and she told them she decided to move the test up to today. A majority of the class expressed concern that the test wasn't supposed to be until tomorrow and they weren't prepared. She told them "well that's not really my problem so deal with it."

Re: Teacher comment is this appropriate?

That is definitely not an appropriate response. I would follow up with the teacher about this.

Teacher comment is this appropriate?

Not appropriate but if this is the first time she/he has said something like that, I wouldn't worry to much about it. The kids were probably really bad and he/she was frustrated. It is is a pattern then I would talk to the teacher.

Re: Teacher comment is this appropriate?

I wouldn't let it get to me. Teachers are human and sometimes kids don't listen unless they hear something that makes them perk up. If comments like this became a habit, then I would look into it further.

I wouldn't let that bother me too much. The chance that she would recreate her test to make it harder is slim, no one wants to go through all that trouble.

I'm not sure what grade this is, but as they get into high school you will be amazed at the things teachers will say to the students. One of my daughters teachers last year told them "none of them will be qualified to work at McDonalds after they graduate."

I would think she is pretty frustrated that the class isn't paying attention.

I don't envy these teachers one bit!

and no parent ripped them apart??

This comment is on the heels of a handful of other issues and we are only 2 months into the school year.
FWIW the test in question was a very important test that will weigh heavily on their report card grade. That report card will be reported to high schools they are applying to get into. This semester is particularly a big deal to these kids, they need to do well in order to get into specialized schools.

Re: Teacher comment is this appropriate?

Why is the teacher's response being questioned, rather than the students' behavior?

If my kid came home and told me the teacher said that, I'd tell him to behave himself in class and stop pushing the teacher to the point of insanity.

She's not REALLY going to force them to all fail. I mean, come on ........

Exactly this! I'm sure she was frustrated and told the kids a lot of things to get them to pay attention and that's the one thing they heard. How many times have we threatened our kids when we really know we're not going to follow through?!
No more Ipad ever again!
We're not going to Disney if you keep behaving this way!
Etc!
She's human and reached her breaking point. We've all had bad days.

I questioned the behavior first before getting upset. It wasn't the entire class misbehaving. I don't tolerate any bad behavior especially in school.
It was 4 specific children that were misbehaving. By misbehaving apparently they were talking in the hall on the way to gym. I would be upset if it were my kid and punish them accordingly but it wasn't. She believes in group punishment and "if 1 is bad you all go down with the ship."
They have other subject teachers who I have spoken to and both said they are a great group of kids and they haven't had any issues thus far.

I'm sure the teacher won't rewrite the test so they all fail. Thatbwould reflect badly on her too. It's probably just an empty threat to get everyone in line. My DD's teacher told them whoever doesn't listen in class is not going on the field trip they had a couple weeks ago. Everyone went on the trip.

Not that I am aware of. I think it was an idle threat in your case, that the teacher wouldn't actually go through with it. At the same time, I don't think that's going to motivate them. It only makes them resent the teacher and act worse.

I think some teachers forget that they are supposed to inspire and motivate. My daughter took AP World History last year and the day before the test her teacher told the class that he didn't expect anyone to get over a 2 (Graded 1-4, 4 being best). I mean, what kind of motivation is that to do well? Maybe he was trying to use reverse psychology, but I doubt it.

i'm going to have to disagree with everyone else.

no, it is not an appropriate comment. Even as a frustrated teacher, you do not threaten students with impossible tasks.

I know a lot of people said "oh, she wouldn't ACTUALLY do it..."- i wouldn't risk thinking that. teachers who have tenure and union protection do not care as much as parents seem to think.

Some people also said, we all use similar threats at home. I agree. I've told my DS many times his LEGOs will end up in the garbage and they never have. BUT, i am his parent. I have that "right"/"privilege"/whatever else you want to call it. In my opinion, a teacher does not have the same right to "threaten" children in her class as parents have at home.

Teaching is not just a job, it is a vocation and a calling. A VERY VERY difficult career path. I find that some teachers nowadays forget that part.

not directed at any teachers here as I do not know you, just talking form my limited experience with the teachers I know.

Thank you. Exactly what I was thinking.

The reason why teachers hit their breaking point is because we live in a "not my kid" society where we allow kids to call the shots. It's beyond difficult to be a teacher today.

This exactly! I am a teacher and it gets worse every year. "Not my kid". It's so frustrating and makes my job near impossible. I love teaching... but have strongly considered leaving the profession... this being one of the main reasons.

I understand what you are saying but I assure you that isn't the case here. I'm usually on the teachers side. I actually emailed the teacher and asked if my child was one of the ones misbehaving so that we could address it at home. I really don't stand for that. She said he wasn't one of the kids being disruptive.

Chat Icon agreed 100%
I'd make sure my kid studied their butt off and knew the material inside and out rather than worrying about what a teacher had to say to get the kids to listen.

THIS I would have a major problem with. I'd complain about her moving up the date of the test without warning. I'd go to the principal over it absolutely.

Yes but the Mom emailed the teacher to see if her child was misbehaving to address it and was told no her child was fine. This I have an issue with. I am not a fan of punishing the group for the faults of a select few. There are other ways the teacher could have addressed this. Assign an extra assignment to those trouble makers, detention, etc. Penalizing the well behaved students IMO is unfair to those who are working and are behaving. Also I imagine there is participation scores towards grades in middle and high school. She could also give poor participation scores to those few ather than mess with test scores for an entire class.

Now if she said the whole class was misbehaving or her kid was I would feel very different. But I still do not like punishing the whole for the faults of a few.

Uggh, no I don't think that's right. I would give the teacher one more chance and email or call with your concerns. Say that you feel like your child was unprepared and ask what opportunities the class will have to improve their grades. If you don't get a reasonable response I would go to administration. Sounds like this teacher needs help dealing with this small group of students bc she clearly isn't finding appropriate consequences for them.

Wow, she sounds vindictive. When I first read your post I really thought it was a teacher brought to the brink by her students. I would call the school and speak with the principal. This is something that should be addressed. The teacher is wrong in this instance. No matter how badly the kids are acting, she is still a grown up and needs to act like one.
