Teachers Gifts, When is to much??
I have 3 school aged children. 2 of them elementary. I am class mom. We always collect 20 dollars frome each parent at beginning of school year for parties and teacher gift. We give $100 to teacher at the holiday time and give individual gifts. Now its the end of the year and we are giving another $100. Leaving us with nothing left for a party we are having. When is enough. I love my daughter's teacher, but come on. What does your district do and am I overreacting.

Re: Teachers Gifts, When is to much??
Wow - $100! I've never gotten more than $50.
Honestly though, while I love getting gift cards (especially ones to staples and teacher stores to offset the cost of $$ put into my room each year), the best gift I've gotten is the memory book my room mom made for me for teacher appreciation week. The kids all wrote their favorite memory from the year - and why they loved having me as a teacher.
Maybe you could have the kids do something like that, and then get a $50 gc.

Re: Teachers Gifts, When is to much??
Im seriously thinking of cutting the gift down. We spend alot of money out of pocket being class mom ( I don't mind) but when I have to worry about giving the teacher more money. It bothers me.

Re: Teachers Gifts, When is to much??
Speaking from a teacher's perspective, I would NEVER expect anything extravagant. Something simple like a card with something nice written in it from the student would be sufficient.

Re: Teachers Gifts, When is to much??
I love my memory book too. I'm surprised that you collect for parties. Usually my class moms just ask the parents to provide the snack/food for the party. With each holiday different parents provide the snack/food so that everyone contributes and it's not always the same parents.
I always take care of the crafts that we do for each holiday. I would never ask the parents to pay for the crafts or activities. If it's in my plans for the kids of course I should pay for them.

Re: Teachers Gifts, When is to much??
In our district we collect $20 from the parents in the beginning of the year. We've been doing it like that for years. Thats not the problem. Giving the teacher another $100 at the end of the year is. Is $50 enough??

Re: Teachers Gifts, When is to much??
Speaking as a teacher, I would be VERY uncomforable w/ receiving $100. Although incredibly generous, it is SO unnecessary. Any form of money is weird to me. A GC is a better option if you cant think of an actual "gift". What about to a resturant or spa or something nice for the summer? $50 MAX!!

Re: Teachers Gifts, When is to much??
I've always received $100 gift card-usually to the mall or american express- for Christmas and for the end of the year as well. I completely think this is more than generous and I would never expect it. I can understand that it adds up, especially having 3 kids, but I feel $20 for the year from each parent is reasonable. I've never had my class moms run out of money though because I don't ask for much throughout the year. I also sped ALOT out of pocket for various things.

Re: Teachers Gifts, When is to much??
honestly as a teacher, i have never expected a gift like that. IMO i think that is too much and would never expect parents to go out of thier way like that. Even during Xmas time the gifts are just extra not expected

That's a lot! Rich received a $50 Visa GC and a $25 cheesecake factory card from the class.....but he received several GCs from the students separately. (DD, Starbucks, etc.) Some cutie even gave him a tie!

I totally agree.
I absolutely LOVE cards with a note inside. I would much rather receive that type of a gesture rather than an actual gift. I would not be comfortable with receiving money either. If you have to get a gift, maybe a small candle from YC, but don't spend more than 30 dollars IMHO.

Re: Teachers Gifts, When is to much??
i disagree with the above posters.
it's a district by district thing...in my district, i get $200 at christmas and about the same at the end of the year. it's about $10 per kid each time. i usually don't get individual gifts as well, because that money is collected with the intention of covering individual small gifts.
honestly, that doesn't even cover what i put into the kids. i just spent $35 on fathers day gifts for them and $45 on mothers day gifts. then the money i spend on parties, holiday gifts, valentines day, other gifts, etc. and i don't complain...it's normal in my school.
so when i get those gifts twice a year, it's a nice gesture because it basically is given right back to the kids when i buy their next set of gifts.
$100 is only about $4 per kid, which i don't think is excessive. remember, it's from the whole CLASS, not an individual. that would be absurd from an individual.

I totally disagree with your thought process. As a special education teacher, it is my job to motivate students in any way possible. Most of my students are on behavior plans (both individual and as a class) and they receive rewards based on their plans. I put out $$$ for this because it's what I do and how I get through to them BUT I do NOT expect to get anything back in the form of gifts. It's not a "tit for tat" type of thing.
I, TOO, spend $$$ on holidays, class parties, Friday lunch club, etc. because I want to do this, NOT because I want anything in return. If you feel as though you need a payment for being a caring teacher just because you spend $$$ on your students (as many other people do), then maybe you shouldn't be spending money in the first place. It's NICE that your parents are generous, but I think it's out of line to EXPECT such generous gifts.
ETA: Of COURSE the money you receive in gifts doesn't cover what you spend. If you only KNEW what I spent this year - I'd need gifts upwards of at least 500.00 to cover my costs incurred.

I totally agree with you again! I don't think that anyone goes into teaching and doesn't spend any money out of pocket. I teach high school special education and I don't usually have parties and things like that but I do spend money out of my pocket for my classroom.
In the past 6 years of teaching I can count on one hand how many gifts I have gotten. Also, I teach in a very middle class district. some of my students have money and some do not. I would never expect a gift from them.

Re: Teachers Gifts, When is to much??
I planned on getting my own gc for my son's teacher. I'll give $ toward the class gift but this is the person who's job my son made very difficult.
So I know for next year, how do I go about "helping" a teacher so they're not spending their own money?
With the taxes we pay, the thought of an underpaid teacher buying classroom supplies disgusts me.

If you personally want to help out a teacher, I would either get some supplies from a place like Staples that can be used in the classroom. Or maybe even a gift certificate from LL Weans or something.
I do think that most teachers expect to spend money out of pocket.
But it is nice of you to want to help out!

that's fine. you don't have to agree with me at all. never did i say it was tit for tat. and i also work in special education, so i know exactly what you're talking about. who said anything about expecting a payment? you're putting words in my mouth. and i don't EXPECT anything. i DO appreciate it greatly though.
i spend money on them, they spend money on me. personally i love getting the AMEX card and going shopping on the last day of school. i also love the cards the kids make. i'm no "holier than thou" person who can make a statement that i give and don't receive. no one can honestly say that.
don't turn this into an "i must be a selfish teacher" thing.
we may disagree, but you are entitled to your opinion!

that is very kind of you. i have a "wishlist" on my website and parents often donate what my class needs. you should see if his teacher has one. if not, ask her what is needed. i'm sure she'd be thrilled. the little things really add up, whether it's pencils, erasers, or books for kids who can't afford them.
send her a note and see what she says! parents like you are angels!

Teachers - I hope you are remembering that all of these expenses can be written off on your taxes! Save your receipts!!
IMO, I would feel very uncomfortable getting a gift like that from my students - I would MUCH more greatly appreciate a nice note at the end of the year. As a teacher, all I ask for is maybe a little appreciation..
If you feel the teacher went above and beyond, make it a formal letter and send it to the principal and/or the superintendent. Having that in their personnel file can always be a good thing.
In my school, a teacher cannot accept a gift over like, $25 anyway.
