Teachers: When should students be taking the SAT?
My nephew is a junior in HS.
His guidance couselor told my brother that he should finish his current math class (Honors Algebra 2) before taking the SAT...
They're planning for him to take the SAT in May, June AND September...
I told my brother to shoot for March, May, and June...that way if my nephew gets a good score in March, he start applying right away...
What do you guys think? Should I keep my trap shut?

Re: Teachers: When should students be taking the SAT?
I don;t think May, June and septemebr is a good idea.
By the time the June exam rolls around, he won't have his scores yet, and how much can he learn from May-June? it's not worth going through the exam again if he's not getting a chance to improve. What were his scores on the PSAT? Why do they assume he's going to want/need to take the test 3 times? I agree with once in the spring and once in the fall to get a score, improve and do better, but it's better to study well and take the test and get a good score once, than to take it 3 times without any improvement. What is he going to do to improve the score.
The latest exam he can take depends on what colleges he's applying to, and what their deadlines are.
Also, he can't really start applying in March as a Junior. it'll be a good baseline score to give him some idea of what colleges he can realistically apply to, and it's good to start compiling apps and working on essays over the summer, but all of the heavy duty application occurs closer to the fall.
(PS: Not a teacher, I've been an SAT tutor for kaplan on and off for 5 years)

THANK YOU SO MUCH!
I actually took it 3 times (overachiever- I had what I needed to go Ivy, but I still wanted to do 'better')...
My FIRST score was the best.

I also want to point out that if you just take one test after another, the score usually goes down. I encountered a lot of serial testers at Kaplan who would just take as many exams, real and practice, as possible and all it did was reinforce bad habits.
Only take a test a second time if you've given yourself a chance to improve.

As another Kaplan employee, I want to second Jenn's comments.
Most students will take the May exam, it's the most popular. However, if the student is in AP classes, they should strongly consider the March test since it won't interfere with their studies for the AP exams. The key is to take it once and score your best, because there is no need to take such an anxiety-ridden exam more than once.
Your nephew should take a practice test, Kaplan offers them for free on a regular basis. It will give him an idea of his starting point and help him figure out how long it will take him to study.
