Teachers who used an FMLA followed by a child rearing leave

Do you remember if you had your insurance until your sick days are gone OR for 12 weeks? In my case, 12 weeks will be longer.

DH is self employed, so this is an expense I was not prepared for. I was under impression we would have the benefits for 12 weeks.

Thanks!

That's what I thought. But my district just issued me a letter stating I only have them until my sick days are exhausted. I am going to ask this week.

No. But in my district FMLA doesn't count weeks that school is closed for a full week. So any recesses get added on... For my DD my leave was 13 weeks Bc February break got added on

FMLA is 12 weeks total. You can keep your insurance for those 12 weeks. I have never heard of an individual district being able to change the length of time that you can be on a FMLA. When I was on mine, it was 12 weeks total, INCLUDING any and all school vacation days, except summer.

I'm not a teacher....
But I had health insurance covered while on disability leave: 6 weeks for vaginal delivery. Paid for the additional coverage while on FMLA.

It depends on yout district. I was technically covered for 12 weeks, BUT they deducted any time I took off in the calendar year. Since I left a week and a half before my daughter was born, I technically only had benefits for 10.5 weeks. Chat Icon

I had DD back in 2007, so things might have changed.

Technically you do have coverage for the 12 weeks, but once you exhaust your sick time and are no longer getting paid, they have no place to deduct your insurance premiums from. They are going to be looking for a check from you if you want to maintain your insurance the entire time you are out. If you have enough sick time to cover your leave and they were able to deduct your insurance like they regularly do, they would be no financial issue on your end.

ETA: You may want to speak to central office about your district's policy regarding borrowing sick days from future years. If you can borrow a few days, that will help bridge the gap and lessen your personal insurance cost. Of course don't turn around and quit after your leave is over or you will owe them a pretty penny like I did Chat Icon .
