Teaching to read - flash cards
DS just started to read. I was thinking of making flash cards with the words he read so he can be reminded and see how many words he has read - to incourage him to read more words.
Any thoughts?

Do a search for first words flashcards. I think most schools use this method.

Flash cards are good for sight words I feel. Personally, I don't like to use cards for words they can sound out because I want to keep encouraging the reading process which is not all memorization...

Large words in Red. If you want to get crazier, label things around your house.
I read Teach Your Baby To Read & have to say it's a simple method if you can spare the time.
Try to get your hands on sight words for the first few years on school.

We keep a sight word wall on the door in my kitchen using index cards.

Re: Teaching to read - flash cards
We inadvertently did a lot of unconventional methods to encourage DC to read. We figured all of this out after they started reading well above their age levels....
Closed captioning is free, on all TVs, and helps them associate words with what they are hearing. It wasn't long before DS was correcting the Closed Captioning on the screen...
DS learned real quick how to read the names of his favorite shows on the DVR list. He would ask for a show, and we'd say "We don't have that show", and he'd respond with "It's right there!".....
I also started teaching both DC to read car logos. Reading words is very similar to reading car logos. Lines in a pattern equate to a sound. Every parking lot has a ton of cars, so as we're walking through a lot, I have them name the car brand based on the logo. DS quickly learned to read the name of the brand from either the back of the car, the logo itself (Ford, Scion, etc), or the license plate frame.

Re: Teaching to read - flash cards
Oh, I forgot this one. Over the summer, I used to play a game where I'd hold up to word from their flash cards from school & they'd have to come up with a silly sentence. Later, I did 3 words, etc.
I was doing it to stop them from harassing each other but I think it helped them remember the words & also be able to come up with creative sentences on the fly. It worked out great because one kid is a very poor speller & the other is a great speller but struggled with coming up with sentences during his spelling assignments.
