Re: TeaCup Chihuahua
hey scott, theres actually no such thing as a "teacup" dog
do you just waqnt pics of chihuahuas?
heres a link to the chihuahua teacup myth if youre interested.
if you guys are looking fro a chi just let me know. i can help you find a good breeder/rescue.
(as far as breeders go i'd recomend ChiWantOne . Sassyz chis came from her. She also adopts out sometimes. If i ever get another chi it will be from her
good luck!

Re: TeaCup Chihuahua
I only said Teacup because someone on craigslist was offering one. I spoke to him last night but his story sounds a little wierd. The dog was from a breeder originally but he got it from another person. She was 6 months old and very loveable. Only 3 1/4lbs. Thats what we are looking for. She was also trained on a wee wee pad. My friends Chi is 3.5lbs and she is sooo loveable. I hope we can find one just like her.
He originally paid $1500 and was asking $900. That was too much for us to spend on a dog that we dont know anything about her past.

Re: TeaCup Chihuahua
my Kylie is a t-cup (although this isn't an official term) long hair chi
ETA pic - this was taken the day after we got her, she was barely a lb, but such a little fire ball! You have to be careful with these little ones, make sure you get one that is energetic and playful. Image Attachment(s):

It isn't an actual breed...breeders will mate small Chihuahuas and hope that they stay small but there is no guarantee that when you buy a "teacup" it will stay under 5bs. Breeders say "teacup" and charge you a whole lot more but it really isn't an actual breed.

thanks, we love her to pieces, she's a real spunky one! When we were doing research, we really loved chocolate, blue and all white.. we knew we wanted a long hair.

this is true, there is not gurantee the pup will stay small, they can only guestimate by using the pup's weight at 12 weeks.. rule of thumb is weight at 12wks x 2 = full grown weight.

Re: TeaCup Chihuahua
Teacup is a term used by breeders to basically say *runt* or *Preemie* in a nice way. Although a smaller dog might be cuter to have, something that is 3 lbs when it is supposed to be 6 lbs is not always healthy.
Having said that, if you want a Chihuahua I would highly recommend looking for a reputable breeder rather than craigslist. A reputable breeder will stand behind the health testing and reputation of lineage of their dogs, and will guarrantee their health. IMO $900 is a bit much for a dog that is not show potential (health & lineage tested, etc).
That posting on craigslist seems shady (I looked it up) and his story sounds a bit off too....
Also if you are willing to be patient & are not *married* to getting a fawn, female <1 yr pup, I highly recommend looking at some of the rescue sites.
Good Luck
ETA: My Chinese Crested was the *runt* and she is only 7 lbs (she is supposed to be up to 12). The breeder I went to porperly identified her as a runt & did tell me that because of her size she was not show potential, even though she came from well bred Champion lines. I don't want you to think I am against smaller dogs, I just want to express that the over-breeding of runts does result in a strain of dogs whose health problems are being intentionally bred for the sake of keeping them small. It is indeed possible to get a small pup that can be healthy, but it is also likely that it may not be. That is why researching the breeder is so important.

Re: TeaCup Chihuahua
also keep in mind having a 1lb chi (fully grown) means youll be spending alot of time in the vets office.
in my opinion, run far away from anyone who uses the term "teacup"
eta: my chi is a "big" Chi weighing in at like 6 or 7 lbs. when i got her i wanted her to be like 3 or 4 lbs, but now im sooo glad she is alittle bit bigger.

Re: TeaCup Chihuahua
scott......... rescue doesnt mean shelter. they have chihuahua rescue organizations.
but like i said, some breeders do rescue as well. did you check out chiwantone.com ? she does rescue as well as breed. (and the ones she breeds ARE super tiny---although shell never call one a t-cup
waggytailrescue specializes in chihuahuas in nyc as well

Re: TeaCup Chihuahua
If you have some patience, and are willing to look for a few months then the chances of finding one through rescue are actually not too bad. Especially in the coming months, because this is around the time when the *Christmas puppies* will find their way to rescue orgs.
Good luck.

Actually Chiwantone is currently accepting deposits for a dog she has available, but I think it is $1300 becuase she is show potential.

Re: TeaCup Chihuahua
Here's a picture of molly. i ADORE her she's sooooo spoiled Both dogs came from chiwantone. they are both within the breed standard- under 6 pounds. Molly is 5 pounds and Forty is about 4 pounds
I have Forty too- but I am not sure if I have photos of him here at work... I'm a bad mommy WAIT I found a 40 folder- he's on the left in the black hat.
Edited to say- you should be able to find a decent priced chihuahua that isn't show quality. Even though my dogs are AKC they could never show- their snouts are WAY too long (not stubby like the other beautiful chi's on here) and they are VERY long too- not cobby at all. But I love them all the same. Molly was $800.00 and Fortune was sort of a rescue. Image Attachment(s):
