Tell me about English Bulldogs....

In a year or so we are going to get a dog - DS will be 5 and every little boy should grow up with a dog. We have been researching breeds for quite some time and think a English Bulldog would be the perfect breed for us, being that we live in a co-op and their known reputation for being super gentle with children. Plus - SO much cuteness for one dog. I know they are prone to skin and breathing problems - and thats OK with us. Does anyone have on or know someone who does - we have done a lot of reading up on them but never actually heard first hand experience by anyone with one, thats my next phase of research so any info you have would be great.

We have a 3 year old English Bulldog. He is great with kids (we are just starting our family but so far so good with other people's kids) and is very laid back. They do have a lot of health problems. It wasn't until he reached adulthood that they all started coming out - skin allergies (we have him on special diet), severe hip dysplasia (if you can find a reputable breeder that could help), among others. They require a lot of care, cleaning the folds so they don't get infected, for example. Overall, we LOVE our dog and would not do anything different. But he has been so expensive it is crazy.
