Temporary Housing Recommendations

A situation just came up that may require me and Vanessa to get some temporary housing.

I am not thrilled about it.... but its something I have to look into.

I would be possibly looking for something... say from November and to last a few months. I am thinking of a furnished 1 bedroom.

Anyone have any ideas where I can get a short-term lease (a few months). I looked on craigslist and saw some possibilities. Seems like there are a decent amount of apartments available during the winter months (as I guess all the snowbirds head south for the winter and these become available).

I am open to location (Nassau, Suffolk)... but it can't be too far out east (no farther than exit 64 on the LIE).

Re: Temporary Housing Recommendations

Oh... and something somewhat furnished would be preferable.

Re: Temporary Housing Recommendations

I can go up to 1500 a month if need be.

But i saw places on craigslist for cheaper. Let me know. I want to get an idea on whats out there just in case I have to go through with this.

Thanks.

Re: Temporary Housing Recommendations

Actually I am looking Long Island. My wife does like our current area. However, I don't think my wife would want to stay in Bayside (unless the place was really nice).

I am buying in Levittown.

But I may have some issues getting the house because the bank is bitching claiming they want my co-op sold before I buy the house. They don't want me to carry both mortgages for any period of time. I honestly thought all the bank would want was a signed contract for the place I am selling (to prove I am really selling it - which I am). But with two mortgages... my debt/income ratio is rather high and if they go by that... i dont blame why they would say no to the mortgage.

This may present a problem with the sellers of the house. I have to see what they say. They may ***** and find another buyer.

If they decide to find another buyer.... we will have to find another house.

But even if that happens.... and I don't get this house... I still plan on selling the co-op cause I need to get it out of my hands in order to go after a house. Thats why I would need someplace to live on the short-term.

Short-term living doesn't even have to be in Levittown. I can literally be anywhere in Long Island. I saw a place in Seaford on Craigslist. I saw a few places in Long Beach.

Re: Temporary Housing Recommendations

Rob and I stayed at an extended stay hotel for business people (In White Plains, but they have them all over), when we sold our co-op we were there for 2 months. I think we paid $1600 a month including breakfast and daily maid service. It was kind of cool, they had a pool, gym, they also had do it yourself laundry facilites onsite.

Something like this I would consider. I was actually looking at some "corporate options". But everything I saw was over $3000 a month. The hell with that!

White plains is not an option for my wife though cause she works in Long Island. But I would consider something similar in Long Island.

Re: Temporary Housing Recommendations

Thanks for the suggestions so far.

My gut feeling... will be that the sellers will wait it out. I don't think they want to find another buyer at this stage of the game.

I am also willing to compensate them if the closing goes past 30 days after the date listed in the contract.

We will see... it may not be an issue. I just gotta hope my co-op buyer doesn't bail. But I don't think thats gonna happen... my wife said she had that glow in her eyes that my co-op was "her place".

I'll have more information in a few days. The contracts are signed on my side... my lawyer is just holding them until we have this timing worked out.

Re: Temporary Housing Recommendations

there is also a resident Marriot (extended stay) in Plainview just off of the 135 on Old Country Road.

You could also try any of the Avalon housing developments. They do short term as well.

Re: Temporary Housing Recommendations

My brother got re-located down to Virginia and stay in an Extended Stay for about a month. I'm not sure what the rates were, but I know there's one in Melville and another in Bethpage.

Re: Temporary Housing Recommendations

Why don't you try a different lender. I used to work for Countrywide wholesale and I know they allowed you to do that and would remove the old mortgage payment from your DTI.

Re: Temporary Housing Recommendations

Check out this webpage. It's Off Campus Housing for Stonybrook students. However I think if you send a check for $15.00 it's open to anyone. They have short term housing options and also listing of apartments in the area. Hope this helps

My mortgage broker said it wasn't impossible. He just said it may not get approved. We will see.

I just heard from my lawyer that the seller of the house i am buying sounds like he is willing to work with us on the date of their closing. This will give me time to sell the co-op and buy the house around the same week to eliminate the need for this temporary housing.

I am just waiting to hear the final plan from the lawyers on what needs to be done.

Re: Temporary Housing Recommendations

Mr Pill --- I hope this all works out. I don't want to be a spoil-sport, but .... I sold my co-op 3 -- yes 3!! -- times. The first buyer was pre-approved for his mortgage but then couldn't get approved. The second buyer had all her paperwork in order, plenty of $$, but...I guess the board just did not like her!! She was turned down one month after her interview, the day AFTER I had given away all of my furniture to Goodwill.

The third buyer - one year later, and 50% higher in price - was the one that worked. So I am just hoping YOUR buyer is approved by your board and has all the paperwork in order. Just a heads-up, make sure your buyer has everything clear and completed for the board... Unless your buyer has already been approved in which case congrats!!!
