Tenure question
If you were given tenure in the NYC school system, did you receive a letter in writing that stated you got it?
My friend and I were wondering b/c last year I was told that it was pretty much an anniversary date and that if I wanted a piece of documentation I'd have to go to Brooklyn to get it.
My friend is trying to get something in writing from our principal but she keeps getting told by the AP and the secretary that it's just a verbal.
Does this sound right?

Re: Tenure question
Never got anything. I don't think my principal even told me. In fact, she thought I was tenured last year.

Re: Tenure question
On the back of your annual review there is a box that is checked saying that you are no longer on probation. That is the only confirmation I got that I have tenure.

Re: Tenure question
I also got a "certificate" last week. That is in addition to the paperwork that ends my probationary period.

Re: Tenure question
In 2000 I got a piece of paper that stated that my probation had ended. It was in my mailbox. No fanfare at all.

that's a shame. i've always heard from city teachers that it was just a verbal thing or a check on their annual review.
On LI, i had to formally apply for tenure (resubmit a resume, an outline of experiences, courses, etc. i undertook during my probationary period and an essay). i was formally approved at a Board of ed. meeting and my tenure was celebrated by the staff at my school at a union meeting. it's a shame you all don't get the same respect.

Re: Tenure question
It's not that NYC teachers don't get respect for getting tenure, they don't make it into a big deal as Long island. In other words, I hate to say it, but we don't have to prove ourselves as much as Long Island teachers to get tenure, it isn't too political as it is in LI. We have one of the strongest union in NY and getting tenture in LI is like heaven to LI teachers to keep their jobs. Anyway, if you want to find out if you have tenture you have to look on the back of your annual review and it will tell you and you will also get a letter stating that your probationary period is over. GOOD LUCK!!

Re: Tenure question
That's funny, they called me down to sign paperwork saying I had tenure. So I do have a piece of paper stating I have it.

Re: Tenure question
Thank you ladies for your replies. I think my friend is going to pursue getting something in writing from our principal even though it'll be on the back of the annual review.
I think she just wants piece of mind...
