Terrible twos/Tantrum threes.... how bad is bad?

DD is 2.5, and a very verbal one so I think we are more towards the threes- for the most part she is a very good girl but good lawd does she have a temper!

We were just in Waldbaum's (a little close to lunchtime, which is right before naptime--- so that was my first mistake) On the way there she said she wanted to go to the bagel store for lunch (she is starting to recognize things in the neighborhood- weird!) and I said if she was a good girl in the store then we could go and get bagels. I don't always do the reward system but she was up early and I knew the store could go either way. Usually this is a good enough motivator for her and I even had a few snacks to take off the edge in case she was super hungry.

Well, she was really off. I couldn't believe it! Really pushing the boundaries. Kept grabbing things off the shelves, talking back, not following directions, I wanted to scream! And it doesn't help when someone else sees her doing something wrong and makes a comment about how cute she is Chat Icon

Anyway she grabbed a bouncy ball (I told her that we were NOT buying it) that kept her occupied and I finished as fast as I could. When we checked out I took the ball off the conveyor and she went cuckoo. Just so you know HOW verbal she is she said "Fine, then I am going to take a candy bar!!" Chat Icon Needless to say, she didn't get ANYTHING and I literally carried her out kicking and screaming (I am a Special Education teacher & my background has really helped me with her... I managed to carry her out without hurting her and her not hurting me... I am also 5+ pregnant)

She had a tantrum for about 5 minutes in the car- I explained to her that we do not act like that (she was also trying to pull my hair and punch) and that because of her behavior we were not going for bagels. SHE WENT MENTAL. I finally got her into her carseat (that was fun, I was breaking a sweat) and we came home.

Finally she "got it" and listened to me when I said she had to go spend some time in her room. She ended up falling asleep

We are also supposed to go see the Massapequa Fireworks tonight, I told her she has to really fix her behavior if she wants to go. I didn't want to take away everything since the bagel store was like the end of the world to her.

I'm also hoping we aren't seeing more of this because she knows a new baby is coming Chat Icon

We don't take my kids to the grocery store anymore. Someone always throws a tantrum (2 and 3.5 years old).

From 1 yr to right before 3 we had an awful time with dd. we had a day like you described more often than not. We celebrated good days. It happens. It's just a phase and eventually they out grow like everything else. Sorry you went through that

Re: Terrible twos/Tantrum threes.... how bad is bad?

I just posted how my almost 2 yr old had a tantrum at swim class this morning. It's a half hour class and we had to leave. He was saying "No" to everything. He usually loves class. Started this morning when I go for my usual walk he didn't want his stuffed animal then he did, then he didn't and threw it in the street. Got worse in swim and he was yelling in the car he wanted to eat. I gave him a half banana when we got home and it went on the floor. I pretty much picked him up and said time for nap. He passed out quickly.
Hoping when he gets up it gets better... Chat Icon

Thanks, not that I want to hear other people have had bad days but it helps to hear we aren't the only ones. When we have these incidents my mom is flabbergasted and insists that I "wasn't like that"... I try to explain to her that its normal and I am sure I was but she prob blocked it out LOL.

That sounds like everyday of my life. My girls are 3 & 2 and I'm always walking out of somewhere! I even would like to walk out of my house most days but I'm sure I'd get in trouble for that lol
They say it gets better, so I'm still waiting!

When you ask how bad is bad.... I can tell you- there have been times where I thought an exorcism was in order.
That is how bad bad is.
I have never in my life, experienced screaming like I have in this past year- from 2 to 3 years old.
To the point where I have to shut doors and windows for fear of the neighbors calling the police.
So yeah- it's BAD!

You are definitely not alone! This is one of the reasons I really try not to run errands with DS anymore. It's just too hard. And when he's tired it's a double nightmare.

Watch, she'll probably be a perfect angel tomorrow and then a complete demon again the next day. Fun times!

I get the same thing too ! "oh you and your brothers never acted out like this. You always listened and sat and played so quietly"
Really? Did you drug us? Tape our mouths shut? Cause I'd LOVE to know what I'm doing wrong Chat Icon
