Test to stay?
I’m trying to find more details about when this will start but yesterday Hochul announced rolling out the CDCs test to stay program at schools in the midst of the current outbreak.
I think this is great news (although our quarantines have been lower overall this year) as opposed to remote.

Test to stay?
Her goal is to keep schools open but I just saw Mount Vernon schools are remote until 1/18

Re: Test to stay?
So my friend's boyfriend is an assistant principal in a school here on Long Island. She was telling me that he is the one that does the contact tracing and quarantining of the kids who are deemed "close contacts". He said not one close contact he had to quarantine has come up positive themselves. Not one. So yes this would be a very good thing. Keeping healthy kids home for so long is beyond detrimental to them.

I agree - I've spoken with our MS principal and she can say for certain that there is no spread in schools - we had an outbreak before Thanksgiving (which was actually more cases than after Thanksgiving) and she said there was no pattern that showed it was spreading at school - it was very random (from a school perspective but all of the kids in question were hanging out outside of school).
People are fearing a post holiday school shutdown though still...

Yep. So there is no reason to shut schools but our governor loves drama and creating chaos and fear so there's that.

I think at this point the possible shutdowns are due to there not being enough adults in the building. Subs are impossible to come by right now.

That makes sense.
I just fear if we shut down for 2 weeks after the holidays we won't go back until spring.

I don't think they would ever keep the kids home until April. This isn't March 2020. I can't imagine it would be anything more than one, maybe two weeks. This surge won't even last until April. *This is what I keep telling myself to avoid a complete mental collapse* Carry on

Lol. It would have a huge impact on my sanity as well.
I just feel if they close to stop the "surge" the surge will go on anyway as unless people are known to have Covid - they won't isolate... So the numbers will still be high when it's time to return as well.

If schools close for more than two weeks, I will just ripped my son out of school and he can just be an 8th grade drop out.

Closing schools wont' stop any surge. Nobody is going to be sitting in their homes wrapped in plastic and ordering door dash and keeping their kids locked up. Those days are long gone. They are safer in school because at least there they are forced to stay apart (somewhat) and wear masks That sure as hell isn't happening if my daughter is home with her friends. If we didn't have school I'd probably be using the time to go on some trips that I have airline credits for and haven't used because it's so pricey to travel on school breaks. So we'd be down in maskless Florida.

Test to stay?
Our district offered remote this week for anyone wanting it in an effort to keep the kids healthy for Christmas. Nice, but most kids are in school (at least at the HS). I'm wondering if they will be offering that for the week after break.

Test to stay?
Wish this was an option last week as my son is currently quarantined through the break (he’s negative) because of exposure of 1 child on the school basketball team. Even though they wear masks, it’s considered high contact. So yeah… My sons school is no longer set up for a few kids being remote so it’s literally like you are trying to figure out when teachers post assignments, no teaching. It’s a Royal mess. And the phys ed teacher tried to penalize him for participation during this time…. Believe me lady, he rather be in school right now too because this is really difficult. Scary part about it is, when they return from break and go back to basketball practice, this can happen again! It’s insane! Something needs to change.

I know the constant quarantine/risk of quarantine is what drove some people to vaccinate. As if you are vaccinated and exposed you don't have to quaranitne.

This IS the issue. All TAs who should be working with students are being pulled to cover classes. The other day a secretary covered a study hall. There are no subs.

And how sick are these kids? I feel like coxsackie was wayyyy worse in daycare in terms of a nasty illness In fact I think a poster on the Flu A thread said her ped said the kids with Covid were running around and the kids with Flu were really down with high fevers. Are they reporting the Flu cases in teh school? I don't' ever get a letter saying- we have had 3 new cases of flu A today! When they send those letters via email I don't even open them anymore- straight in the trash

It doesn't say but the ones over the past month - DS couldn't tell if those quarantined were because they had covid or because they were exposed.

Re: Test to stay?
We need to figure out how to safely shorten the quarantine and isolation period.
The current system is unsustainable and more testing is not going to solve this.

I’ve been saying this for months. We need more data on 3, 5, and 7 days post positive test especially for those who are asymptomatic or have mild symptoms for 24 hours. My BIL was very sick for 8 days so his 10 day isolation made sense.

I agree - as in the case with any illness, there shouldn't be a one size fits all policy.

Re: Test to stay?
They are saying the variant has a short incubation period which is why it's spreading so fast. With that being the case you'd know very soon after exposure if you are sick. It would make sense for them to shorten quarantine requirements.
