Testing + for Strep B?
Just got back from the dr. Not only am I "completely closed up", but my dr. also told me I tested positive for Strep B.
Anyone else? He told me it's no big deal- 25% of women test positive... I just need to know I'm not the only one out there
Sooooooo frustrating... he sent me out the door with the instructions to have "lots of sex" so that maybe my cervix will begin to cooperate... My next appt is Monday- guess what I will be up to until then

Re: Testing + for Strep B?
Honestly, I think more than 25% of women test positive. I did, and it just meant I was on antibotics while I was delivering DD.

my dr didn't mention the antibiotics.. I just read about it on babycenter.com! Wow... He really made it seem like no big deal, but of course, I should NOT have googled it because BabyCenter scared me

Thank you!!! Your DD was okay after the delivery? Did they have to monitor her any differently?

Re: Testing + for Strep B?
I couldn't fathom having lots of sex....if you can, good for you!!! haha I'm going to walk a lot this weekend, see if that brings me anything!!!
I've known people that tested + and it's no biggy....they just need to give you antibiotics during labor but make sure if your water breaks you go to L&D right away OR even if you THINK your water broke...to call. If I had tested + for Strep B, when I had my peeing incident she would've sent me to L&D regardless as a pre-caution b/c they do need to start you on antibiotics.

Re: Testing + for Strep B?
I tested positive for strep b. I freaked when I first found out, but it's just an IV that you have to be put on when you get to the hospital. Make sure you tell the hospital when you go through admitting that you are strep b positive. My doctor told me if my water breaks don't labor at home, I have to go right to the hospital. Also, time my contractions b/c I really need to be put on the IV before I'm 5 cm dilated.
*I asked my doctor if the baby will be put into the NICU b/c I have it and she said no. It's very common for woman to test positive. Don't freak

Thank you so much for all the responses...
Totally unrelated question.. I feel so dumb even asking... When does your water usually break? Early in labor, late? I know that sometimes you can be in active labor & the dr may have to break it himself... I'm so confused... Is this one of those "case by case" pregnancy issues?

Nope, she was perfectly fine and I had other health issues that were a concern for DD.
In regards to your water breaking. Many womens' water doesn't break on it's own. I was induced and they broke my water for me.

Re: Testing + for Strep B?
I was + but we didn't know until after my delivery, however, I had been on IV abs before my delivery for a precaution bc they didnt know my strep status.
Its not a big deal, you will get IV abs a few hrs before hte delivery to protect the baby. It is very very common.

Not a big deal at all, but just know that the antibiotic burns really bad when it's going in.

Re: Testing + for Strep B?
i tested + for GBS at 16weeks (they did a swab because i was contracting early) I then ended up going into pre-term labor at 25weeks. since i was GBS+ they automatically hooked me up to IV antibiotics (if your not allergic to penicillin thats what you will get) i was in the hospital for 5 days and i was hooked up all 5 days because they were afraid iw ould deliver or i would break my water.. well i didnt BUT i did find out that im allergic to penicillin i broke out in a nasty rash over a week later (yes an allergy to penicillin can happen that much after you recieve the meds) So when i went in at 37 weeks for high b/p i was told i need an emergency section and i again was hooked up to IV antibiotics. It truely was no big deal what so ever!
no worries!

I agree... I tested + as well. It just meant I had a penicillin IV during delivery. It did AND didn't effect me. My epidural didn't take (3 times), so I ended up giving birth without pain meds. Due to the fact that I had that stupid IV in my hand, I wasn't able to get up and move through the (pitocin) contractions. I was confined to the bed and would've given anything to be able to either stand and rock or sit on the birthing ball to relieve the pain. In the end, it didn't really matter. It was 17 hours from the time my water broke until delivery, so they started hanging IV fluids anyway so I'd stay hydrated. Either way (GBS + or -), I would've had that IV anyway.
No special concerns for the baby.

Re: Testing + for Strep B?
I was pos for both pregnancies. You just have to get to the hospital quicker so you can get the antibiotics in your system beforehand - I think I got 2 bags with DD #1. I labored so quickly with DD #2 that I did not have enough time to even start the antibiotics with her, but both her strep tests came back neg.

Same with me...
DS is completely fine and was after delivery. He did have to do to the NICU but only because I had a slight fever (101) and they wanted to monitor him because of my fever. Other then that he would've been with me.

my water never broke with ds.. the broke it for me after 29 hours of labor.... however when they finally broke it ds was born an hour later as i went from 4cm to 10 cm EXTREMELY quick... interestingly when i spoke to my mother... who had 5 children... she told me hers only broke with my brother who was premature... i thought it was interesting, like maybe i got that from my mother

I went into labor (my water broke) before my strep results came back so they put me on the antibiotics as a precaution.
