Texting when phone calls don't go through (question)
I am SO not tech savvy at all, but I saw this on TV today and I don't get it.
They said that if you can't get calls to go through on your cell during/after storm, texts should still be able to go through.
Is that right? Why is that? I had no idea!

I'm not sure, but in my house, I have almost no cell service. It's impossible to talk on a cell phone. However, it is sometimes possible to get a second worth of service that's long enough to send a text. Could that be what they're referring to? (Doesn't really sound right, but thought I'd share.)

thats what i would guess... it doesnt take as much time/service to send a text as is does to make a phone call

I agree. We live in a dead zone on the East End and after many tries I can often get a short text to go through but forget about a long one.....
PS. and forget about a call!!

This morning the news said that you should send texts as opposed to make phone calls because it will keep the lines clear. Texts don't use much data or bandwith or something. I forget the exact term they used, but they said texting is better.

This is true, during 9/11 a lot of texts only were sent and went through because of jammed lines.

text messages require less bandwidth which will improve your chances of getting/receiving messages. Data/binary is just a bunch of 1's and 0's.

I'm not sure why it would happen, but I can absolutely see it as being true. I have awful service in my house and almost every call that I make gets dropped, but I text throughout the day with no problems.

I think that's possible! My parents are in the Dominican Republic right now, and I was texting with my mom last night, but she wasn't able to make calls.

And some thing else really weird... I can have 3 bars and a text won't go thru. Another time I have NO bars and the text goes through. I don't understand.

I think there are only a set number of telephone "lines" - something like that - and if they clog up, your calls won't go through but it seems texts are sent a different way.
This is what happened right after the earthquake. I was able to text/email using my bberry but phone calls wouldn't work. I had reception and lots of other people were on the phone. I think there is a capacity issue.
I know after 9/11 when I was overseas, I wasn't able to call the US for 3 days due to capacity.
Not sure how this would be impacted by the hurricane
