thankful for good insurance

Can I just say how I don't understand how people pay out of pocket for infertility treatments. We are at the very beginning of this journey, and just for initial consultations and blood work, it would come to over $10 grand if our insurance didn't cover it. My heart goes out to anyone who doesn't have coverage for this.

You are very very lucky - we have to pay out of pocket.

I can't even imagine how you do it. I am so outraged that some insurance plans don't cover this. I must have been living under a rock not to know this! I'm angry for you and embarrassed that I never realized it.

It definitely sucks to put it bluntly. But we knew it awhile ago so we started saving when we realized we were having a hard time getting preggo. That why we will probably stop after 2 IVF cycles (if this 1st one doesn't work) because it's not in our budget to do more. Unless of course the coverage changes ... Ho hum

It's complete and utter shit that insurance companies can dictate that having a child as not medically necessary, even if you have a diagnosed medical condition that prohibits pregnancy Chat Icon. Employers, states and federal government need to wake up and make some changes. How do they expect the population to continue to grow when more and more men and women are being diagnosed with IF? Such a shame Chat Icon

It's definitely ridiculous that it is not covered. I somewhat understand a cap on the amount they are willing to pay out (ie 30K, max number of cycles, etc), but to not even give people an opportunity to try is absurd. There are plenty of medical services that I have never ever used and will most likely never use, but they are covered.

My DH had cancer when he was 19-20, does that mean we should not be afforded the right to have a child because he was dealt a sh!tty hand.

You're very lucky. We're OOP. If this cycle is unsuccessful, I'm not sure if/when we'll be able to try again.

Re: thankful for good insurance

We paid OOP(depleted an old 401K) and luckily got PG with twins on our first IVF. There are some non profits around that offer funding for those not covered by insurance

thankful for good insurance

There are not may insurance companies that pay for IF, and if they do most of the time it is limited. You ARE very lucky and MANY MANY women would do anything to be in your shoes. For a lot of us IF is a HUGE financial burden and unfortunately there are not many couples with the means to do it again and again and again. Meaning when the money runs out, they are completely out of options. I try not to think about how much I have shelled out in the past 3 years, I don't like to be reminded of all the things I could have done had it not been for IF.

I know it wasn't malicious, but I'm not really sure of the point of this thread. It seems to just rub it in the girls faces bc most don't have coverage and I'm sure don't want/like to be reminded that they are the unlucky ones when others have coverage. Jmo

It was not meant to rub anything in anyone's face and I apologize if I offended.

I honestly don't know what the point of the post was - except maybe to point out how naïve many of us are BEFORE we are in this situation. I had no idea that insurance companies do not usually cover this and I consider myself a very well-rounded, well-read, politically active, up to date on current events kind of person. I think it's horrible and disgusting that not everyone has this coverage. I think there needs to be more awareness about this. That is all I meant by it.

Speaking of awareness....I went on the website where the petition was to get insurance companies to cover IF. They need 10,000 signatures. Would you believe there are only 2,090 signatures. UGH

I didn't take it as you being mean. It's honestly a shock to people how much money IVF and IF treatments are and I agree with the OP.. I can't believe so many of us girls have to pay out of pocket. Sometimes it's okay to sit back and be grateful for what you have.

I agree with all of this. It's mindblowing what all of this costs and I think its completely wrong that many insurance companies, including my own, do not cover IF. I am "lucky" that a lot of what I have done so far (testing, dr visits, some meds, etc) has been covered because it has been coded as repeat pregnancy loss and not infertility. But the specialist I am seeing is out of network, as was some of the testing I had done, and the costs so far in just a few months, with some insurance coverage, are crazy. And that's without any procedures, just testing and visits so far! I see IF same as any other medical condition and think it should be covered just like any other medical condition Chat Icon

Ladies, keep in mind if anyone pays for IVF out of pocket you can deduct on your insurance. Your bills have to be a bout 7% of your combined gross income.

I just signed it. Its 100,000 by March 7th...very soon. Unless someone does a full out campaign I don't see it happening. Sad. Hopefully some more ladies on here will sign it. Since a lot of people are private about this subject its hard to get others to sign it. I'll have DH sign it though.

We always had coverage for our infertility cycles- until surrogacy. Nothing for that was covered- drugs, bloodwork, sonos, NOTHING! It isn't even legal in our state!Chat Icon

in cases like yours - the insurance companies should have to cover if treatments - it is plain discriminatory not to....what a sham!

We have insurance through my husband (electrical union) and don't have Infertility coverage.... I found out on this board that the union had actually put it up for a vote last year and the members voted it down!
Of course, we had no idea it was up for a vote and now I kick myself every day for not paying attention and telling my husband to vote! I also wanna punch the guys who voted no. Especially since they cover birth control and 1 abortion per year. It def does suck.

Re: thankful for good insurance

I wish I could say the same thing but we are OOP too.... Luckily, some amazing women on this board helped me out....

However, at our FET today, we had to pay for the bill for the month of services. I had told my DH that it was about $1700 (that's what I thought I read somewhere).... so when they gave me the receipt for $3500 it was rough... DH was not so happy but at that point, they had already defrosted our little embies so there was no turning back! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

so frustrating though to not have coverage... Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon
