If someone were affected by the breach, why not cancel your CC and wait for a new one with a new number. For debit accounts, close your account and open a new one with a new number. Create a new pin number. If there are outstanding checks, let the person know you are going to send a new one.
It is annoying to try and change any automatic payments, but for peace of mind if this happened to me it would've been the first thing I did. It was widely publicized. Not to be rude, but am I missing something?
I think what the issue is, is that for some, they were not notified their account was compromised.
Which is the case with TD Bank in particular.
And not to be rude right back (your words, not mine), but many people have 12345678910 things they are caught up in daily, especially DH and his partner......I'm sure the Target thing was just a blip on their radar.
There's always someone on here who has to try to kick people when they're down.
I wish for once people could be like, "that sucks, I'm sorry that happened to you, thanks for sharing so I can take the necessary steps to prevent this from happening".........instead of turning it around on the person which is the case with statements like the one above.

This happened to or account a few days ago. Someone tried to charge $580 dollars to our chase account at a toys r us. Weird thing it wasn't my card used but DHs card, I'm the one that shopped at target using my debit card. However, he was alerted via text msg right away and the transaction was declined so no money was taken out. He called and cancelled the card and got a new one the next day.
Since it was his card, I don't think could've have been target scam. However, I do believe it was him using those stupid local ATM machine. They can copy your card, this happens to him before. I think he finally learned his lesson. I know it's unrelated but as an extra warning, please avoid using the ATM machines at the bodega, 7-eleven or quick check etc
I actually wouldn't be surprised if something like this was more the case with DH and his partner. They're construction guys and are in 7-11 multiple times a day between the two of them. I know they use their cards at the ATM.
Thanks for sharing.

To be totally honest, I really haven't paid much attention to this because I have had a lot going on but if I used my Target Red Card (that's a debit not credit), do I have to have that replaced? I know it can't be used in any other store.

Yep.
I don't have anything to do with their business accounts but you can be darn sure I'm like a hawk with our own personal accounts.
I am sure the two of them will be more vigilant now.

What I am not understanding is why anyone who shopped at Target during the breach still has their old cards? The bank cancelled mine and reissued new ones.
Why would anyone be using a card that is known to be compromised?
Because I'm lazy!

If it gives you peace of mind, I would.
In DH's case, this was a debit card, not a credit card.
I'd be more concerned about having no access to my cash for a few days if my debit was my only financial means and my debit account was compromised. Especially if there wasn't a lot in there to begin with.
Fortunately this isn't my case but I am sure there may be some people out there where it is.

Because i had shopped at target my bank called said they are issuing me a new card and my old one would still be able to be used but they decreased how much could be charged, until i received the new one. I was very impressed!
Yeah, I received a new card from Chase about a week ago.
DH said they won't know how this is going to be handled until Monday because all of the charges are pending right now.
A big charge at some fish store and Petco also is added to the list!
ETA: I have never heard from TD how this is being handled. We have our joint accounts from there but I rarely use the debit, only have that account to pay our bills which I do online or through a paper check.
Their business account is through TD however.
TD bank is the effing worst with fraud. I've had my td business visa card hacked 2x now in the past 2 months. Its a supplier I order from stealing info. but you need to wait for the charges to POST to your account. There is nothing they can do to stop them, unless the merchant says they will not be taking the funds. (which requires a letter faxed on their letter head, which no one would do for me). So i had to wait for charges to post, file an regulation dispute and then wait 10 business days. YES, ten business days to get money back.
Only when I blasted them on their FB page did a manager get in touch with me and reverse the charges the next day. I had already waited a week at that point.

It's also been a big issue with debit cards at the LIRR ticket machines - not just target but getting numbers got "easier " I think this is just tr beginning of the breeches. This is going to only get worse as the thieves spend more and get smarter while we continue to defund the programs that would keep them on the side of good vs evil

I have the target debit card and I changed my pin. They can't do as much with a target debit card but they could still make a fake card and use it at a target store if they had the PIN number I suppose...

I used my debit card at Target over that weekend. Bethpage Federal Credit Union notified me that I would get a new card. In the meantime, I moved all my money to another account and when the new debit came in the mail I went to the bank to activate and they cancelled and shredded my old card. So far, no issues and hoping for none!

Re: Thanks target
I'm worried Bc I heard on the news these people obtained phone numbers, addresses, etc. don't know if it's just the target cards or all cards.
I heard the dates and didn't remember I had even gone to target. I got a letter and New card from my bank . Apparently, I used my debit card that weekend. Whoops!
I have minimal cash in the account now, I moved everything out. I'm pissed Bc I'm wondering what personal info they have
Sorry OP ! Really sucks. I have a feeling this is going to get much worse for target and it's customers

Chase alerted me that my card number had been attempted to make purchSes at a NC Walmart. They declined the charges, let me know, and issued a new card. No other issues.

Sorry if this question was asked already - if I used my Target DEBIT card during the breach time frame is my bank checking account that is linked to it compromised?

Yes, unfortunately the theives can clone the debit card and use it. You need to cancel your debit card and get a new one. If for some reason you can't cancel your card right away, you should atleast change your pin immediately and have the card reissued ASAP.

I could understand the little local ATM's but, the 7-11's are Citibank ATM. Maybe I am stupid but, I thought they would be ok. I use them all the time because with Bethpage they are free ATM's.

I got a letter from Bethpage Credit union saying my card was used during the time frame and a new one was being sent. If your bank didn't do this, I would call them and ask them if you are risk. They all know about it.

IMO Target is full of crap and we will be hearing a little more bad news each week. I think Target already knew and knows more and knew it from day one. I also heard yesterday that more info was compromised than they initially thought , like email addresses etc.How did they not know this immediately?? I think they will just keep admitting to a little more each week now that the holidays are over. I am beyond disgusted with Target. How could they have NOT known all this sooner? Good luck with everything!
I agree.
It's also concerning to me, that, while I am sure the bank will do the right thing, how long does this process take, especially because it's from a CASH account (not a credit card).
DH needs to pay his guys and purchase supplies for jobs.
It's a really ****** thing.
My card was hacked a while back during the Ivarone's thing (in the fall, someone was outside skimming, not an employee I understand). My bank refunded the money immediately.

Re: Thanks target
My MasterCard was cancelled but they did not let me know. I only carry one AMEX and one MasterCard for my credit cards. It was annoying last week when my Mastcard wasn't working.
There were a handful of charges I didn't recognize but I just assumed it was DH or my mom. The charges were at very normal places like the gas station, Home Depot and some fast food places. I just assumed DH ate more fast food than usual. I guess I should go back and check every charge.

Hey Sasha! Those standalone ATM machines are whack! They are magnets for freud. Not to mention the insane amount of fees they charge you just to take out money. Time to go back to paying cash.

I only use my Target CC there but I am keeping watch on my statements. My sisters AMEX just got used though... i have had had 3 different occasions where I had to change my CC from skimming, so annoying but thankfully Chase was really good about notifying me and reissuing the card.

yep me too
I did my xmas shopping on the Red Card but I used my own card a few times here and there for stuff too. Just lazy plus nothing they can take out of an empty account. I never used my card as Debit and only as credit.
My company uses Target exclusively for our day to day stuff and we all use our Amex's there.
Told hubby he SHOULD ask for a new target card and we should both get new bank cards.. but we haven't actually DONE anything.

I don't even carry a debit card anymore because I am so afraid of stuff like this happening. I have one that I leave at home that I only use at the bank branch ATM when I need some cash. I am also a little paranoid about identity theft, so we have no auto pays set up online, we still write checks and mail out bills. I have one credit card that i use online that has a $700 limit so if it gets stolen, there can't be too much damage.
It sucks to be the victim of this, I had a family member have a cc # stolen about 10 years ago and went through hell to get the charges reversed. They couldn't close the account until the false charges were cleared up, but the bank wasn't freezing the # at first either. It was a real mess.
I would cancel any debit card I used at Target. My DH has a Target visa card and once he paid the current bill, cancelled the card. I have a Target red card that I haven't cancelled, becasue the # can't be used for anything else but I will probably end up cancelling that too and getting a new one.
Unfortunately, I think all the big stores are at risk for this kind of thing......
And I wonder about the fast food charges - you can get cash back at places like McDonald's cant you? That might explain why there are so many fast food charges, cash back and the employees may not be trained as well on how to spot a fake card.
