I was in Greenwich CT, my mom had JUST come out of a very lengthy back surgery. My stepfather and I saw her and then went to get lunch while she was in recovery room, the restaurant had no idea what was happening. We went outside and everyone on Greenwich Avenue was outside, we got nervous and wanted to get back to the hospital ASAP. Left $50 at lunch and got in car to go back and really panicked when radio was out.
They wouldn't let us into hospital right away, their generators were not all working. But finally we realized what was going on and got back in to see her.
My stepfather and I had to share a hotel room in Greenwich that night...we had already planned to stay there to be closer to my mom. We ate turkey sandwiched and drank warm beer at the hotel, lol. And they gave us glow sticks to light the room.

My DH(fiancée at the time) was home with my 14 year old brother that night

I was at the mall getting my nails done. I remember driving home and being so nervous it was terrorist related. It was very spooky that night. We hosted my sisters 30th that next weekend at my house and we couldn't find bags of ice ANYWHERE!!!! We got married a week laterChat Icon .

I was on the subway!!! I got off the subway with my b/f about 60 seconds before the lights went out. We walked up the stairs and there were people everywhere but no lights. It was CREEPY! We got to my parent's house and still weren't sure what was going on. But that night was great- the whole block BBQed and hung out and drank and partied. It was actually a blast!

10 years ago??!! How did that time fly so quickly.

I was at home. My DH.. then Bf was working in NYC. My mom was having a god awful day at work. The power went out and I honestly thought.. omg.. she didn't pay the bill and is coming home to this.( I have no idea why I thought that.. lol.. I just didn't want her to come to a problem) I started scrambling for the bill to call and pay it for her. Then BF called said it was in the city too. We went out to the car and listened on the radio. Unreal.

I had tickets to a play for our "6 month dating anniversary". I was surprising BF at dinner with them. Well the morning of the play I had to tell him. He walked all the way up and found someone who said if the lights went on.. the show went on. So somehow I drove into the city.. we had dinner on the street with food heated by sternos. We got to the play and the lights went on just in time. The news was there. It was pretty cool.

Best part.. when we got back to his place the power was on and the AC was cranking.

Lvinig in Hoboken at the time with one of my very close friends. Happened first at work so we all went home and when my roommate got home we realized we were not prepared. Ran to Staples to get flashlights. Chat Icon Had to pay with cash bc registers obviously weren't working. We went back to the apartment and decided to walk around Hoboken. I remember going to the pier and it was packed bc people from the city were bused into Boken and on th boats too. We got melted icecream and sat at the pier think oh how weird it was to see the city so dark.

I was at work east side of midtown. We were having a bridal shower for someone in the conference room. I remember the ice cream cake melting haha. I sat on the express bus for 2 hrs and we barely moved. I decided to get off the bus. I walked over the 59th st bridge and all the way to the Queens Center Mall. Stopped and waitied on line to make several phone calls on pay phones along the way. I couldn't get in touch with my FH. Finally reached my sister who told me to get a cab to her house and she paid for it. Then she drove me home and I ate ice cream on the stoop. It was a 6 hour trip home!

Wow 10 years already...where does the time go...I was working at my first law firm job on Wall St. I remember I was typing a letter on Word and my computer screen went black..at first I thought I kicked the power outlet with my feet until I noticed the entire floor lost power. 15 min later, our boss announced it was a power outage for all of NYC so we were sent home. A bunch of us headed to a bar downstairs and we managed to walk from Wall St to a bar in Gramercy Park where we drank a bit and ate. I then trekked from midtown, across the 59th St bridge to Queens Center mall where my parents picked me up and drove me home. Got home, showered, listened to the radio in candlelight and dozed off..I was so tired from all the walking...Chat Icon

the blackout was 10 yrs ago today!

it was right before i started my jr year of college, i was at a summer internship near wall st. i walked down 38 flights of starts and to my apartment in union sq, stopping to get a flashlight and batteries along the way, in *really* uncomfortable shoes, then just stayed in my apartment for the night. i went up and down the 9 flights of stairs to the lobby all night, to see if the doormen heard anything on their battery radios. as soon as the city opened back up the next day, my parents came in from LI and picked me up - they got power back fast. we had just gotten home when my best friend's sister reached my parents - i had been trying to get in touch with her before leaving the city to see if she wanted to come with, but hadn't been able to. so, we turned around and went back into the city and picked her up!

the blackout was 10 yrs ago today!

Hard to believe that was a decade ago!! I was on a bike retreat with my church youth group (I was staff). We biked from Port Jeff to Orient point then took the ferry to CT and biked to our destination in New Haven, then back home again all over the course of 5 days. We slept in church halls along the route each night. So that night, we did our retreat activities in the parking lot by the light of the headlights from our vehicles. Then we slept in the church hall nearly dying of the heat with the lack of AC!! That is, until the lights and ACs and fans all blasted on at whatever time of night that was! Made for some good memories!

Wow, 10 years! I was a director of a large child care center, and was dealing with no power, and a bunch of children, including newborns, who required heated bottles etc. Their parents were all commuters from NYC, it was terrible. One mother of a 3 month old couldn't make it back to LI until after 11pm. I felt terrible for her, she was a wreck.

My friend got married the next night, and thank god things were fine by then, she was a nervous disaster...thought she was going to have to postpone.
