Watched it last night. All I can say is WOW.

I loved it! I have been saying the same stuff for years. Epidurals and medicated births and the affect they have on our babies and children's neurological development is grossly under researched. The only reason it is under researched is for profit and to avoid lawsuits with the doctors.

I love when she says, "soon to be parents spend more time researching bedding then birthing options" or something like that.

I wish more people would watch that film.

I saw it a few months ago and I agree...WOW . I think it should be required watching for anybody who is pg or thinking baout it. Even if you don't agree you atleast have more knowledge...JMHO

I just watched it last night and both my DH and I were also like......WOW!!! Needless to say we're exploring our options in terms of delivering this baby come September. I feel more comfortable being in a hospital in case there are any complications BUT I think we will look into ways to manage the labor pain and stay home as long as we can before heading over to the hospital. I want to avoid a C-section at all costs!!

For the ladies who want to comfort of a hospital, you should maybe look into a birthing center. That is what I plan on doing. I too want the reassurance of a hospital near by.

For those who want to try natural, but still want the hospital. From what mid-wives have told me, they recommend laboring as long as you can at home, so that way the hospital does not have time to give you pitocin or have you lie down on a table, which restricts movement and makes the contractions harder to deal with. I thought that was intresting.

I don't know about all insrance but I do know that most do.

If your OB works with a birthing center then I would say yes, but again I do not know for sure. There are quite a few OB's now a days that work with a mid-wife, they have shared practices. That might be something you are interested in.

I want to have a water birth as well, or at least have the birthing pool there so that I have the option.

Those are my exact feelings. I definitely want to be in or NEAR a hospital. I definitely wouldn't want to be home. But I would consider a birthing center next to or part of a hospital.

Also, I would have the same fear Abbey did- that I would start laboring then decide I really CAN'T do it (even though I know we all can, barring certain circumstances). I'd prefer to have the option as long as possible.

ETA: Is it weird that I was grossed out by the births, but when each was over I cried at the beauty of it

I really can't believe I haven't seen it yet. I am such an advocate of natural birthing too. Maybe I need to rent it this weekend.

Would a birthing center be covered by insurances? Do you know wether an ob would be able to deliver the baby there?


I've always wanted to have a water birth but I haven't really looked into it yet. I guess I should be now that I am TTC lol.

ETA: holy typos. Thats what I get for trying to eat and type.

Most OBs do not work at a birthing center, a midwife would do the delivery but would have an OB on standby incase of emergency. Midwives are required to have an OB "on staff" for consults or in case of emergency. Also, all stand alone birthing centers should have "privledges" at a local hospital to practice in case of a need for transfer.

OB's will NOT do a water birth, in fact OB's usually will only deliver a woman on her back and in "stirrups" which is the worse position for delivery because you are working against gravity.

There are a few midwives on Long Island that are in private practice and just have the OB as a back up "in case". Unfortunately, there are no more birth centers on Long Island

Okay. I watched it!! WOW WOW WOW...

Okay so I always wanted a midwife and stuff but now I kind of want a home birth.. but probably won't do it.. but I do think it was awesome.. minus the bathtub. That is just not my thing.

I waited at home until my Dh thought I would give birth on my living room floor! I got to the hospital and I was 3-4cm. I got there at 8am and had my son by 1:25pm.

I wonder if I should go a little earlier if I have another baby!

I only had the epidural in for about an hour!

I loved being able to not be stuck in the bed! That was the worst part!

Nope the closest one is in Brooklyn. But gaia midwives deliver out of the birthing room in NUMC which has the option of water birth in a really pretty room. I won't do that but I hope to deliver there and use the tub for labor and whatnot. You can just use the room for regular labor if you want. Stony brook midwives is a large midwifery practice that has great reviews.
