The closest to potential drama you will ever see from me (VERY funny update)
This even I passed by a house not far from where I live and saw this flag in front of it:
It struck me as bizarre. I am all about freedom of expression and speech and that is not what bothers me at all. It was just completely unexpected to see in a "yankee" state. Any thoughts?
UPDATE
How does one update a thread like this? Trust me, its possible.
Last night DH went to celebrate his football team's league victory in Manhattan at the bar in which he plays for. Apparently, vodka tonics and hot dogs are not a good mix. Upon leaving the train, he felt rather queasy and sadly, had to purge the evening's consumptions. Where did he do this you ask? Right on the lawn of the home that displays the flag I spoke of earlier in the post. I would not have posted this without his permission, but even he found this rather funny.

Certainly bizarre for NY. Doesn't phase me a bit after living in VA.

As a transplanted Yankee, I still do a double-take everytime I see it now - and I see much more than in NY, as you could imagine, although not as much as you would think.

Just so everyone knows, I am taking the symbol for face value and not implications of anything else.

my sister said there was a guy that lived across the street from her when she lived in bethpage that hung the confederate flag on the back of his truck. definitely bizarre for NY, IMO.

Well I am glad that I am not nuts for thinking this was weird. My guess is that whoever owned the home may not be in NY by choice. Maybe a spouse or job brought them here. To each their own - I shall be neighborly.

Re: The closest to potential drama you will ever see from me
OMG, I'd totally anonymously litter their yard one night with yankee flags... pinstripes and all... I believe they are LOST. I know I don't belong down south... I simply don't relate to their culture... so I stay up here. it never ceases to amaze me when southerners who are profoundly 'anti-yankee' decide to reside in NY and needle us on our own turf.
I guess I would brush it off more if I didn't have the 'fabulous' experience of working (right here on LI for 2 long years) with 2 extremely disgruntled southerners who hated NY'ers as if it was 1863. They had negative and snotty comments for everything about NY and the northeast.... Everything is substandard and ugly, the NY'ers are animals.... One day, I finally asked them 'well then, so why are you HERE?'

Re: The closest to potential drama you will ever see from me
Honestly, though? Now that I live in NC, I'm on "their turf". I advertise the fact that I'm from NY because I'm proud of my roots. I have a "Proud NYer" sticker on the back of my car.
I do roll my eyes at the Confederate flag license plates, t-shirts, etc. down here, but I see them a lot. I sometimes get dirty looks for being such a proud New-Yorker, but I gotta represent, you know?

BUt I think THAT flag is a lot different than a "Proud NYer" sticker

Re: The closest to potential drama you will ever see from me
You would be surprised how many people up north think that way. If you look closely on the parkways there are a LOT of trucks with confederate flags on them somewhere.
I used to work in a bar and a guy would come in every week or so trying to recruit people for his Klan meetings.

Re: The closest to potential drama you will ever see from me
Do you think a person could wave a Confederate flag without an association to the Klan? There HAS to be people who are simply proud to be from the south without that negative connotation.

southerners DEFINITELY could be proud of their culture w/o an association with the klan... but I think THOSE southerners don't wave the confederate flag.
for better or worse, the flag has definite political ideas associated with it. The civil war was instigated over slavery... and has become a symbol of both ceceding from the union (rejection of notherners and their ideals), and later on, becuase of the klan, the harassment and killings of african americans and the segregation of public facilities in the 19th and early 20th centuries...
the confederate flag is different than the lone star flag of texas.... Texans can wave that with pride w/o those negative conotations.... I really think waving a 'the south will rise again' (in other words, 'we'll fight you again') flag in NY is rather inflamatory.

Re: The closest to potential drama you will ever see from me
I whole-heartedly believe that many people (especially the younger ones) see the Confederate Flag only as a symbol of Southern Pride.
I really never thought of the Klan connection, though--it has me thinking...

Re: The closest to potential drama you will ever see from me
Maybe its because what we accept today as our American Flag is a derivation of the flag that represented the Union in the Civil war
Flag in 1861:
that the flag that represents the Confederacy has a different type of impact on us.

Re: The closest to potential drama you will ever see from me
to be totally honest, every time i see that flag i am reminded that the MAIN issue fought during the civil war was the right to keep slaves.
so when i see that flag, deep down, i feel like it's a silent protest that the owner of the flag is upset that they are not allowed to keep slaves. i understand that sometimes that's not what southerners feel when they see the confederate flag, it's just what i personally see.
