the HORROR! No more birthday cupcakes in school!

I think this is so sad and sends the wrong message.

birthdays are really what cupcakes are for!!!!!!

we are a food/sweets obsessed nation (as I sit here eating a DD donut Chat Icon )

I think a better way to curb obesity would be for teachers to look inside their kids lunch boxes and snack bags, and instruct PARENTS on what is a healthy every day snack.

it's not the once a week cupcake that is fattening us all up. it's the "snack packs" and daily consumption of sugar laden foods and beverages.

I just remember how much we all looked forward to our classmates bdays in school, and see how excited my nieces get...to take that away from them is just cruel and unusual punishment...

That's absolutely obsurdChat Icon

A weekly cupcake is NOT making kids fat! It's the crap they eat at home, on their own &out with friends. It's an EVERYDAY problem that won't be solved by elimnating 25 cupcakes per year in schoolChat Icon

That's really just wrong. I agree that obesity is a definite problem, but taking away birthday celebrations in school is not the answer. Truthfully, my mom always made me feel guilty about eating junk, so I would sneak junk and in college I gained a lot of weight since I could finally eat comfortably. Kids need to have a healthy attitude towards food, and banning cupcakes is certainly not the way to do this.

Re: the HORROR! No more birthday cupcakes in school!

They are doing this in my district as well. They will have one party a month to celebrate birthdays and/or holidays. And all food that it brought in for these parties, must be store bought.
I loved making cupcakes for my sons birthday, now on their birthdays we were told that we can come in to the classroom and read the class a book, or make a craft with them.
I'm not crazy about this whole policy.

I wonder how many of these schools still have soda machines and sell juice at lunch. Chat Icon

This is the most ridiculous, band-aid "solution" I have heard (recently).

My district is doing it too. My dd's birthday was Sept 1st so we already did her celebration. We went to Borders and picked out a book together. Then I read it to the class and we gave it to her teacher. It has a note inside that it was dedicated to Mrs. X's class in celebration of R's 6th birthday and dated September 2007. She still got a birthday crown and everything.

Honestly, I was upset at first too but it's fine. My ds's class had a birthday and he came home with stickers and a pencil.

I think we were more upset about the no food rule than they were.

I hope there are no longer sodas, juices, etc... either, otherwise how ironic. Oh...and no burger that are not 95% lean, no french fries, no ketchup, no chicken nuggets (those are loading with junk meat and fillers!).....

I think that a lot of this is BS from the schools to make it seem like they are doing something for the childhood obesity problem in the US. I wonder if schools in other parts of the country have been sued and they are being proactive now.

I beleive most of the decisions for store bought food, no bake sales, no pizza parties have to do with food allergies. Which makes sense if you have a severely allergic child in the school, many people don't realize just how quickly a severely peanut allergic child stops breathing.

Re: the HORROR! No more birthday cupcakes in school!

We think it is horrible too.

Dh brought up a good point.

Don't we celebrate all special events with food? Birthdays, christening, etc

Why not just have a party and get people together and serve them fruit at your next Christmas party?

How ridiculous. This is getting insane.

Why store bought? What is the point of that? So they know what is in it? Such as store bought what?

Yeah, happy birthday to me. Instead of having a cake for me, come read me a story. How lame, really.

Wait, did they have a vote on this or did the districts make this decision on their own?

I just responded on Parenting about this the other day.

There are 19 kids in my son's class. That's tops 19 cupcakes (including the comb-summer bday party they have) for the school year.

Cupcakes aren't making kids fat. Parents who let their kid sit in front of a video game/TV all day & who ply their kids with chicken nuggets & other crap are the cause.

Well, like I said, they better not be taking my nephew's cupcake party away from him at his school or they're going to have one angry aunt on their hands Chat Icon

As a parent with a child with severe food allergies I'm glad. Not only for the safety of my child, but because she gets so upset when other's bring in snacks to daycare and she can't join in on the fun.

Yes but I think it's the parent's (bringing the cupcakes) responsibility to make sure to include that child in the celebration.

I sent Josephs' teacher a note asking if there were any allergies so I can be sure to accomodate that child.

I know in my daughter's daycare, we can only bring in store bought items and the teachers have a special snack for the child with the allergies.

Re: the HORROR! No more birthday cupcakes in school!

The food must be store bought because of allergies. I know in my daughters class there is a little girl with a level 5 peanut allergy, so nobody can bring in anything with peanuts for snack. Which I totally understand.

Re: the HORROR! No more birthday cupcakes in school!

I am so upset about this, you have no idea. Chat Icon

My son is in Kindergarten, and to know that I can't send in cupcakes on his birthday is so upsetting to me.

In Nursery school and Pre-K (in a Catholic school), my son and I made the cupcakes together, he helped me frost them, then he brought them to school- he was so proud.

I also made chocolate lollipos for all the kids for every holiday for them to take home.

That's just me, I like doing those things.

Before I was a mom, I was a teacher for 7 years. I taught 2nd grade. I ALWAYS made my students treats for them to take home (in case the parents didn't want them to have it).

This is just horrible. I'm sorry...a 5 year old doesn't want to celebrate their birthday with a fruit platter.

Ya know what...there are bigger fish to fry in the school systems than to worry about what the kids are eating. Let us, the parents, worry about that.

ETA- my son's best friend has SEVERE food allergies...smelling cheese or milk can send him to the hospital- and it has. We ALWAYS accomodate him with an appropriate (and similar) snack. Parents should be notified in the beginning of the year with a list of children with food allergies so appropriate snacks can be brought in to share.
