Re: the HORROR! No more birthday cupcakes in school!
I remember when I was a kid how much fun it was to have the cupcakes for someones birthday, what a shame that they banning it for such a stupid reason. If I remember correctly, we were actually not allowed any store bought cupcakes when I was in elementery school, how times change.

Re: the HORROR! No more birthday cupcakes in school!
Utterly ridiculous! At my son's old school, cupcakes were banned ... HOWEVER ... on Halloween they would let the kids Trick or Treat from Classroom to Classroom/Office ... and collect candy from each teacher/worker. Interesting, huh???? Also, the nice vending machines sell everything from soda/water to chips/cookies and candy???
BUT ..... NO CUPCAKES! What a joke!

Cupcakes aren't making kids fat. Parents who let their kid sit in front of a video game/TV all day & who ply their kids with chicken nuggets & other crap are the cause.
I completely agree.
I also want to add that I personally feel that it shouldnt' be the school's responsbility as MUCH as it should be the parent's responsibility. Just another way that this country takes away responsibility of parents.

As a parent with a child with severe food allergies I'm glad. Not only for the safety of my child, but because she gets so upset when other's bring in snacks to daycare and she can't join in on the fun.
this reasoning is only beneficial to your child though, which is not fair to everyone else.
all children should be accommodated, but lets face it, if you are allergic to something, you can't have it. a lesson that has to be learned eventually.
I don't believe that the whole should suffer for one.
make sure all children are safe-definitely. but that is as far as it should go. all students should know that Sally cannot have peanut butter and Sam gets sick if he eats shrimp etc.
all of this "banning" was unheard of when I was in school.

So far at dd's school cupcakes are still allowed. They have encouraged healthier treats but I agree, what's a kids birthday party without cupcakes/cake?

I know that my district is looking at making the lunches offered in the cafeteria healthier. They are also putting healthier options in the vending machines, such as baked chips and no soda. I bet other schools are doing the same, so they might not be as hypocritical as you think.

It was unheard of when we were kids b/c many food allergies, especially peanut weren't diagnosed properly. Additionally, peanut allergies are now considered an epidemic in the United States. To the point where researchers are close to having a vaccine.
A level 5 peanut allergy means that the child will stop breathing within 15 mintues of touching something that another child who ate a peanut butter sandwich touched without washing their hands first. It's not a matter of they can't have it, it's literally a matter of life and death.
Until you are given an epi-pen for your baby and told that if you need to use it get your child to a hospital within 30 mintues or they will die, I don't think someone can really understand why food allergies are so scary. I certainly didn't until we started going through it.

This is just ridiculous! I am all for teaching kids better eating habits, but I beleive that an important lesson is to learn to eat these foods in moderation.
Eating cupcakes everyday is not good, but there is nothing wrong with eating them occassionally on special events.
And I agree with some of the above posters who also stated that kids need to get off the couch and get outside.

Going against the majority opinion here - don't think it's so horrible what they're doing. No one is saying they can't have cupcakes for a birthday, just not at school. I don't see anything wrong with not having sweeter/junkier treats at school. They can still celebrate at school with different types of snacks and save the cupcakes and bday cake for their out of school parties.

I know exactly what a food allergy is and how dangerous it can be. (my brother is deathly allergic to all forms of shellfish as well as being severely asthmatic)
that "easy explanation" was for the child. if Sammy knows that Sally "can't have it" that is helpful.
and a LEVEL 5 peanut allergy is something else entirely. and if a child in MY child's class had one, I, as a parent, would NOT send my kid to school with a potentially deadly weapon in the form of a pb&j sandwich.
but as someone else said, it's NOT the reason behind the banning.

Re: the HORROR! No more birthday cupcakes in school!
I think part of this stems from all the lawsuits we've seen recently
case in point, people suing mcdonalds for "making them fat"
yes, it's silly and ludicrous, but at the end of the day, who needs the headache
yes, parents are responsible for what their kids eat. Schools shouldn't be liable. But people are always looking to pass the buck, so schools are just saying, "we don't want to deal with false accusations of us contributing to obesity in America" so no more cupcakes
Right or wrong - they're looking to protect themselves and make themselves look good.

ITA! I also hate to be a "Debbie Downer" but I am looking at this from a teacher stand point. My district has also adopted a healthy snack policy and has made major changes in the lunchroom. Rice cakes, baked chips & carrots are the types of snacks they are offering now, so at least they are not being hypocritical. I understand that 1 cupcake won't cause obesity, but I think it is a good message the school is sending. In my class parents are allowed to come in to read a story or do a craft with the class. The kids love it and honestly they have never complained about the food thing. The important thing to them is that their parent is there and we make them feel very special by giving them a card that the whole class sign, they make a crown, etc. I think the adults get more upset than the kids.
Also, I know that food allergies were brought up and although it isn't the reason for the ban, I can say that I 100% agree on the no b-day treats for this reason. I cannot begin to tell you what I went through last year with my 1st grade class. The anxiety I felt every time food was brought in was incredible. I had 4 nut allergies, a strawberry allergy and a child with celiac disease. Having to worry about what every child was eating at all times was so stressful. I mean children's lives could be in jeopardy. I felt like there were so many more important things for me to worry about than food! Now, it seems simple, parents just read the label and don't send in a snack that has nuts on the label. Well, there were 6 instances last year where snacks were sent in and on the label it clearly stated that the food was made on the same equipment that processes nuts. It was so hard to tell a parent, sorry, but we can't serve these.

I don't agree with it at all. It won't help curb obesity at all, that needs to start at the home with the parents giving healthy food and turning off the TV adn video games and having the kids exercise the good old fashioned way we did as kids - by playing outside!
Thankfully it's not my school district and I will be able to bring something in for my son's birthday party at his preschool in May.

Re: the HORROR! No more birthday cupcakes in school!
eh, I don't think its so bad either. But I guess I am getting used to this idea now having a child that just started preschool. I also think even though they say they are targeting obesity issues, that it does in fact have alot to do with the prevalence of food allergies.
My sons preschool is a peanut free school. And they also follow a "nutrition theme".
This is from the handbook:
Birthdays - Celebrations will go along with our nutrition theme. We are confident it can be fun and "good for us". Use your imagination. Ask your teacher for more suggestions. Guidelines- something not messy since most classes will have snack in their rooms and reasonably nutritious. NO PEANUT products.
Birthday Suggestions Mini muffins ice cream cups fresh fruit cheese crackers oatmeal cookies carrots, cucumbers etc jelly sandwich wedges finger jello (from fruit juice)
Snacks: goldfish pretzels animal crackers graham crackers
We can still look forward to having cupcakes at home with family and friends

There are so many foods that have peanut oil in them, are made on equipment with nuts, etc, even foods you would not even think of having nuts in them. I have seen kids in the peds ER with nut allergies who reacted to various types of bread, cookies, ice cream, cakes, etc that the parents had no idea had traces of nuts in them. IMO, if the child has such bad allergies, they should be taught by the parents that they are ONLY to eat what mommy/daddy sends them to school with.

Re: the HORROR! No more birthday cupcakes in school!
I find the reasoning behind the ban odd, I think 20 or so cupcakes a year isn't the reason any child is fat - but I kinda agree with the overall ban.
I have only been teaching a few years but the number of children I have each year with allergies always doubles. Plus throw in the changining demographic of LI and children who can not eat things for religious reasons - and it makes bringing food to class more trouble than its worth, IMO.

Is that how they think children nowadays are becoming obese? It starts at home when parents are driving through McDonalds at least one-twice a week.

Re: the HORROR! No more birthday cupcakes in school!
This has got to be the dumbest thing ever. A cupcake here and there is not making kids obese. It is the lack of physical acivity combined with constant fast food in front of a TV that is making kids overweight.
I was working in a school today..the assistant principal was asking the kids to name vegetables. She then asked them what vegetable a french fry comes from....the kids replies.....McDonalds!!

I just responded on Parenting about this the other day.
There are 19 kids in my son's class. That's tops 19 cupcakes (including the comb-summer bday party they have) for the school year.
Cupcakes aren't making kids fat. Parents who let their kid sit in front of a video game/TV all day & who ply their kids with chicken nuggets & other crap are the cause.
Couldn't agree more. We let video games babysit the kids..they should be outside riding their bikes and playing with their friends.
We all ate cupcakes..but we were much more active.

Re: the HORROR! No more birthday cupcakes in school!
From a teacher's perspective- I have to say that I support the ban on b-day cupcakes and such. For 2 reasons:
1) I have many many students who cannot afford to buy or make cupcakes or have parents who either work or dont care enough to do something in school for their b-day. Just today I had a boy whose b-day it was and he was so sad because he wasnt even having presents or a party
2) I have chocolate and nut allergies and the most popular type of cupcake is ALWAYS chocolate. students get left out and I dont believe in serving the majority if even 1 student cant participate.
Nevermind the hassle of preparing (most of my parents expect me to provide drinks. cups, plates and forks) it also takes away too much time from learning. Plus, what about students who have summer b-days and NEVER get to celebrate in schools.
I know its not the pouplar opinion on this thread but its another persepctive.

While I agree with this perspective, they are banning cupcakes for obesity reasons. At least, that's my understanding. Your points are all valid though.

Re: the HORROR! No more birthday cupcakes in school!
as someone who works in a district with a food ban i have a few things to say:
1. this has nothing AT ALL to do with allergies
2. cupcakes don't make kids fat---parents who don't let or FORCE their kids to run around and play make their kids fat
3. kids SHOULD learn healthy food choices starting early. how many of us honestly craved fruits and veggies as kids over cupcakes and chips?
4. as a teacher, i'm fine with it. i can still sing and give out pencils/stickers/etc to the kids. you can still have snacks at home to celebrate. schools have become synonymous with food, and it's getting ridiculous.
5. bottom line--kids are watching too much tv and playing too many video games. they should be out riding their bikes and running around--forget getting hurt--that's a fact of life and a lesson that needs to be learned. all kids should get a scrape and broken bone during childhood...that's what makes a kid learn is through experience.
6. how is it that kids are joining more sports teams than ever and are getting fatter and fatter and making more and more excuses as to why they don't have time to do their schoolwork? priorities are getting skewed and kids are learning the wrong lessons. there needs to be a fine line and balance between school/extra curriculars/sports/tv/etc
and that's just my 2 cents. take it for what it's worth
