Re: The HR saga continues.....and gets worse?
are you kidding me? She is way over the line and you absolutely did the right thing by going to HR.
She needs to realize that people have different beliefs and that no one religion is "right."

Holy Cow!! I would be LIVID!!!.. who the hel l thinks they have the right to push anything on someone like that.. thats ridiculous and that person should be the one getting an earful, not you so I would go straight to HR with tree and ask what this is about.

You are totally not overreacting. I am pretty laid back with comments co-workers make and I would have filed a complaint as well.
You need to kick her in both shins!

Re: The HR saga continues.....and gets worse?
You were 10000000% right to march yourself directly to HR. I am NOT one to make a big deal out of things or cause drama, but that was totally and completely out of line !! -
You were VERY clear in your response re: being uncomfortable discussing the topic, having it shoved down your throat, and you were MORE than clear about your lack of interest in this person ever attempting to brign up the subject w/ you again - All in a very professional and polite manner. -
What she did was completely uncalled for - She has every right to her beliefs, but in an office setting, her behavior was totally inappropriate and unprofessional -

Re: The HR saga continues.....and gets worse?
she stepped WAY over the line - she wants to help you try and find "balance"? to me it sounds as if she is actively trying to convert you. i hope it goes well with HR - that is 1000% unacceptable behavior!!

Re: The HR saga continues.....and gets worse?
As an HR person I would want to know about this.
I think you did the right thing.
There are certain things that you shouldn't discuss at work and religion is one of them.
You made your point that you weren't interested in her pursuing this line of conversation any further, now it's bordering on harassment.

Re: The HR saga continues.....and gets worse?
The other thing, M., is that you have already complained, and she has already been talked to, no? So is she just a complete dumba$$ to be doing this, or is she just that religious that she thinks you need saving?

Re: The HR saga continues.....and gets worse?
I think that you did the right thing. You need to get HR involved...this constitutes harassment and creates a difficult environment for you.
HR will document the situation and sit down with her to explain that she cannot force her religious beliefs on you nor make you uncomfortable. They will very carefully explain how this behavior is harassing and how it violates company policy. She will be told that there is an expectation that this sort of thing will never happen again...you should expect an apology.
This woman is wrong on so many levels...working in HR for as long as I have I am unfortunately not surprised by her behavior..but that doesn't make it any more acceptable. It has to stop now. The comments were unacceptable...the tree...just completely upsetting.
Good Luck...let us know what happens.

She didn't step over the line......she took a running jump and landed so far beyond it that she can't even see it behind her anymore
Some people just don't get it. You absolutely did the right thing. Every one has a right to their beliefs and opinions but NO ONE has the right to shove them down your throat

Why would you ever do something this risky even in a joking kinda way.. knowing soo many people are being layed off.. Yeah I think that she is just sooooooo comfortable here that she thinks she is bullet-proof. She is BFF with the HR manager, and they have both been here for 30 years. I went directly to our corporate liaison, not to her BFF, because I feel like the report would have gotten skewed or lost along the way.
Thanks everyone for your responses. I guess I just wanted to make sure I did not have a knee-jerk reaction.

Re: The HR saga continues.....and gets worse?
You did the right thing. This is harrassement at this point. It's one thing to express your beliefs but at this point, I think you made it clear that it was not a subject of discussion.
The tree and note is a "I feel bad for you". It's a pity thing.
It's way out of line in a work environment.
Whatever your beliefs are, you cannot impose them on somebody else or make them feel like they are losers.
I remember somebody doing that to me to give blood at work. We had a blood drive. Telling me about the gift of giving blood. She kept going at it. Until I told her I saw the note that was posted every 5 feet in the building. That I was in a place of business doing my job. That IF I wanted to give blood, I knew where to go. I did not need the guilt trip. That she did not know people medical history and that maybe I was not eligible to give blood so she should stop harrassing me. And that I should not have to justify IF, WHEN, WHERE I gave blood to her. I made her feel like she was 1 inch tall. She never talked to me again.
ETA: You did good by bypassing the BFF in HR.

Sorry your co-worker was an arse. Good for you for putting her in her place.

I think you did the right thing - actions like are inappropriate in general and especially inappropriate in the work place. It is something that deserved to be brought attention to.

I am shocked! What kind of person consistently exhibits behavior like this at work???
I would have elevated it at this point too.

Re: The HR saga continues.....and gets worse?
It's called discrimination on the basis of religion, and ultimately causes a hostile work environment that your employer should be aware of, and rectify as soon as possible. This kind of behavior is completely inappropriate, and opens the company up to some SERIOUS liability - if she gets fired, it's her own fault, do not feel bad!
