The infamous pedicure question...

They are OK during pregnancy, right? I am so in the need of one and have an appt for tomorrow. I read once that you have to be careful with the massage part because of pressure points that could bring on labor. That is just an old wives tale, right? The massage is the best part. Chat Icon

Re: The infamous pedicure question...

IMO it's an "old wives tale" I get them complete with a 15 min massage (which feels amazing on my swollen legs) and I have not gone into labor.

My nail girl said it's the pressure point near the achilles tendon that is supposed to "induce contractions" and as long as you are not doing reflexology it wouldn't matter.

Plus, you would have to stimulate that spot for a LONG period of time for it to do anything!

Re: The infamous pedicure question...

My friend said when she got a pedicure WITH the massage she started shaving contractions (she was about 36 weeks) It is true that there are pressure points on your feet- I also heard that it has more to do with your ankles IDK. This early on for me (at 30 weeks) I would just get a pedicure minus the foot massage, better safe than sorry!

ETA: If you are near or on your due date, I would totally get pedicure WITH the massage in hopes of bringing on the labor!

Re: The infamous pedicure question...

I think it is fine, just bring your own tools to avoid infection. I have been having DH rub my feet whenever I can get him too. I think you have to be careful with reflexology like the pp said, and towards the end (it seemed to work for Dani).

I only had a few when pg. The one I had 2 weeks ago made me uncomfortable but I was 38 weeks and swollen.

I hope they're okay!

I just got a nice one done yesterday and since I'm due in August, I plan to continue getting them.

Re: The infamous pedicure question...

I revel in the massage. It's a BS massage anyway- not like a real pressure point type thing.

Re: The infamous pedicure question...

my ob said they are fine as long as you avoid the massage and are careful in going to a reputable place with clean tools or bring your own.

i'm taking a break from them until i'm closer to the end, but when june hits, i'll be in the chair every week!

Re: The infamous pedicure question...

my OB said they are perfectly fine, and that if they really did bring on labor that docs would tell 40 weekers to go get one! My massage therapist did say that there are pressure points that affect the uterus near the achilles and in pinky toes but they would have to be stimulated forcibly and for a while for anything to work.

I just tell them not to use any cutting implements to reduce risk of infection.

Re: The infamous pedicure question...

If you are towards the end .. GO FOR IT!! Get the massage... have them touch ALL the pressure points... and just enjoy. I swear, I would still be pregnent today if I didn't go and get one of those 5 days before my due date LOL

Re: The infamous pedicure question...

I've gotten infections twice getting a pedicure (2 different places in NYC).

It's really common. It took lots of dermatology appts to get my feet perfect again. One was def. either in the water/soaking basin that they soak your feet in or in the pumice thing that they buff your feet with.

I wouldn't do it pregnant.

Actually, I'd never get one again.
