Re: The midwife couldn't hear a heartbeat today

The Dr. couldn't hear the heartbeat on me at 13 weeks .......when everyone says "Oh you should absolutely hear it now blah blah" Everyone is different, my uterus hadn't come up from my pelvic bone yet and he just couldn't hear it - He did a sono and it was 100% fine and strong ........
At 17 weeks he could hear the heartbeat w/ that stupid little thing -

DO NOT stress out over it (I know, easier said than done) But it is kind of early ...........Good Luck !!

Re: The midwife couldn't hear a heartbeat today

Like all the other ladies have said already, please do not stress too much. I was told it was way too early before 13wks to pick up with a doppler. Even at 14wks, they couldn't pick the baby's heartbeat with a doppler for me and only picked it up this week with a doppler. I am 16wks along now.Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

ETA: I was in the hospital at 9 1/2 weeks and the Dr had the hardest time find the HB. He said at that stage on the doppler it is "extremly hard" to hear. Chat Icon

Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Like everyone already said, it is probably just too early. Even your doctor said that, and honestly they seem to have a habit of jumping to the worst case scenario so if your didn't, that's a pretty good sign.

Re: The midwife couldn't hear a heartbeat today

The NP used a doppler at my 11 week appointment, but she said it was pretty early and that she might not be able to detect a heartbeat. I know it's really hard not to worry, but it's likely that it's just to early to detect anything. I hope everything is ok. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: The midwife couldn't hear a heartbeat today

I don't think you have to worry that much.

My OB couldn't hear a HB with me until I was about 13 or 14 weeks. He said it's quite normal, b/c hte uterus doesn't pop out of the pelvis until then.

He too was goiing to do a sono if he couldn't hear it by 14 weeks but then we heard it once I "popped". I do understand your worry, but I hope you feel better after reading my story.

Umm personal question but are you really skinny? If not it isn't unusual for them not to hear a heartbeat for a while. Some people don't hear the heartbeat externally until 10-12 weeks and even much later than that!

I will say prayers that your sono goes well today.Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I'm not really skinny but kind of average. I am 10 1/2 weeks so I fall into that range of when she should hear it.

I've read 12 weeks-try not to worryChat Icon

Re: The midwife couldn't hear a heartbeat today

The fact that they saw it so early (5 weeks) is a very good sign already.

You are early to be hearing it with the doppler (my Dr. told me at 10 weeks that he may not pick it up) and it often depends on the baby's positioning.

Also, if the person doing it wasn't very experienced they could have trouble locating it too. At one of my recent appointments, the Nurse Practitioner tried to find the HB using the Doppler. I was about 19 weeks. She couldn't find a "good reading" but assured me she heard "something". Chat Icon Needless to say, I was a NERVOUS WRECK! I then started feeling the baby moving and kicking, so I knew everything was okay and at my appt last week (23 week) my Dr. found it instantly.

My point is - I am sure everything will be FINE. Don't stress yourself out about this!!!! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon sending you lots of prayers!

The first time my doctor tried using the doppler I was 13w6d. Since it was my first time doing it I had no idea how long it was supposed to take but my doctor's face said it all after she tried for a solid 15 minutes - she could not find it and you could hear a pin drop in the room. I started to well up with tears and as soon as she said she wanted to move me to the sono room we finally heard the most beautiful sound. It has sooo much to do with the baby's position, your placenta, etc. etc. Please stay positive and keep us posted! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon
