The Sound of Music is On!- ETA, now with a question at the bottom
I love this movie!!
I can't wait to watch this with Jordana. This movie, Mary Poppins, and the Wizard of Oz were all classics in my house. (Those and Grease 2 )

Re: The Sound of Music is On!
I danced with my grandfather to Edelweiss at my wedding!! This is my favorite movie ever! Parts of it were filmed where my mom grew up in Austria (Mondsee and Salzburg). My mom made her communion at the church were they get married at the end.

Re: The Sound of Music is On!
OK- So rewatching it, I remember the whole Nazi part. I can go line for line the whole movie until the wedding. But the Nazi part, I am so fuzzy on. So I think my parents must have shut it off after the wedding when I was young or fast forwarded it or something... I'll have to ask my mom.
Did anyone's else's parents shut off the movie at a certain point? I'm thinking of doing this...

No ma'am. May I ask, why you would shut it off? I think there is an important message there.

this is my all-time favorite movie!!!! As a kid, I always fell asleep after the wedding, so I never saw their escape. When I was finally able to stay awake for the whole movie and saw the end, I was totally
About a month or so ago, the von Trapp grandkids were on The View and were terrific!

I love that movie
Nope - that part was never shut off in my house - I don't know why it would/should be - it was an scary reality of what was going on in that part of the world at the time.

Sadly, it is part of history that if not taught will be forgotten. That is why I was always taught "NEVER FORGET". I could not and would not EVER shelter my children from that. There are simple ways of explaining it on every level of a child's development.
I was singing "Edelweiss" when I was 5.

the nazi part is more pronounced in the theatrical production of it. it's watered down a bit for the movie version. i played elsa schrager in a high school production.

Re: The Sound of Music is On!- ETA, now with a question at the bottom
it was never shut off for me, but I was never taught what it meant.
I always referred to it as the scary part- because of the music, i think.
I didn't understand it completely until I was in 4th grade and started really learning about the war and the Nazis.

me too! My grandparents were survivors, but their families never survived. I grew up wiht their friends all having numbers on their arms. I actually went to the camps in Poland and was always a part of my temple's Yom HaShoa memorial since I was 5. I would read a poem by a child my age who died in the Holocaust.
I learned about the Holocaust when I was younger 5 and it was too young. I was afraid to take a shower because I was afraid it would turn into gas (and I didn't really understand what gas was). I had terrible nightmares. I do think its important to shelter little kids from that, but I would never keep that kind of information from an older child. In fact, I expect my children to go to Poland/Germany to see the camps for themselves - especially Majdanek and Aushvitz. The survivors are almost all gone, but my kids will definitely learn about what happened.

That part of the movie was never turned off, but also not explained to me, that I can remember. I remember that I didn't quite understand that whole plotline of the movie until I was a little older.

Re: The Sound of Music is On!- ETA, now with a question at the bottom
The "black spider" that Gretel spoke of represents more than what was portrayed in the movie. Seeing a swastika kicks my brain into a train of thought based in fear. Even though WW2 ended over 60 years ago, there are groups that are alive and well in this country and on LI who are supportive of the ideaology and mentality of the Nazi party. It is truly frightening.
I hope that someday I can bring myself to go to Israel to see Yad Vashem and to see Auschwitz. I think it is a responsibility for me, as the survivors left to tell the story are few in numbers. I took a class in college that was solely about the Holocaust and my final project was to interview a survivor. This was an experience I never forgot. I am blessed to have grown up relatively free from bias, but every once in a while, I hear comments around me that lead me to believe that the world has not come as far as we thought.
Sorry for the rant. This is a very important subject to me.
