This may sound dumb, but couch to 5k has seriously helped me through the final months of my dissertation work. I may have taken longer to run the 30 minutes, but who cares? All that matters is that I finished. I realized it is the same thing with my dissertation. It's taken a lot longer, but who cares? In the end I"ll finish and it's a great accomplishment. And, when I run, no matter how much trouble I'm having, I always finish. There's just no option of stopping. And I know that will be the same with my work. Days and weeks may be rough, but I just need to push through and finish.

So you can see, couch to 5k was very therapeutic for me. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Thank you!!!

Question for everyone who did c25k:

If you did the one with Robert Ullrey's podcast, did he talk during the music and tell you when to walk and when to run? Or was it a music cue?I used DJ Beatsmith and it was a music cue that told you when to run.

I do remember him talking to tell you when to walk. Especially during the weeks where each day was different. He'd say, "If you're on day one, it's your time to walk. For those on day 2, you have 3 more minutes, for those on day 3, you have 8 more minutes.' I liked dj beatsmith more.

Woah, that would have been very annoying. I recommended the DJ Beatsmith to someone but saw that Robert's podcasts were also on the website I gave her.

Good luck! It will get easier. Make sure you rest a day in between runs. I found that helped a lot in the beginning.

Re: The un-official Couch to 5K thread

Good idea! I started last June and have been running ever since. I was a runner in hs and college and then stopped after college. I tried several times to get back into running but always ended up sore or burning out. Couch to 5K helped me get back into running. I even ran a few 5K's this past fall!

Re: The un-official Couch to 5K thread

Actually I'm glad this got bumped. I have a question...

I finished the program in November, ran a few weeks after that, and then it got too cold and I stopped (since I was running outside before work). With my dissertation work, the morning was the only time I could run and I hated that it was so dark and cold.

Anyways, probably in a month I'll start up again. I am sure I won't be able to run the 3 miles nonstop off the bat. What week should I go back to in the program to get myself there as quickly as possible?

I would try week 4. See how it goes. If not so well, go to week 3 or stay on week 4. If it goes well, move onto week 5. I wouldn't do the whole program over because I'm sure in no time you will be at 30 minutes again.

Re: The un-official Couch to 5K thread

I use a great app on my iphone that tells me when to run and when to walk over my music. I highly recommend the app. It is the only one I've paid for.

I just finished week 3. I've never been a runner - barely even a walker. I didn't start from the couch - more like from the floor. I'm shocked how how easy this plan makes it.

I'm not sure what others used...but in the beginning I had a stop watch around my neck and I held it in my hand. It was the easiest way for me since you have to be able to see the time pretty frequently. Now that my runs are a lot longer I have a pedometer with a stop watch on it and I just clip it to my shorts. HTH!

You can do it, just take it one week at a time. I started day 1 a year ago tomorrow and thought it was challenging. I really didn't think I'd make it to 3 miles and now I'm up to 9 and training for a half marathon! The program works, good luck!
