There Are Jobs in the Hamptons. If Only Workers Could Afford The Rent.
Unable to staff shifts, some restaurants and shops, already reeling from lockdown closures, are suspending service during the lucrative summer season.

There Are Jobs in the Hamptons. If Only Workers Could Afford The Rent.
This really made me think of what was revealed with the pandemic: that the jobs people tend to look down on are somehow so essential to society, yet we don’t want to pay people appropriately or give benefits. So now you have all these very wealthy people on the east end having to wait on a line for pancakes, but they don’t want the cooks to be able to live there. So then what?
One quote from the article: “We can’t pay them enough to live in the community,” Mr. Schneiderman said.
“We need to create more affordable housing, we do. It is creating issues for so many businesses,” he added. “It’s not just the town, and certainly not just restaurants: it’s the hospital needs nurses, the schools need teachers and custodians. Everybody is priced out.

Oh, but you know, they don’t want to work because unemployment pays well.

“ Towns are cracking down on the share houses, and that makes it harder as well,” Mr. McLaughlin said.”
Big problem all over so it is harder for people to find housing.
They can also make more on unemployment. $18/hour, 40 hours (if you even get that much working in these places) is $720 before taxes. Unemployment with taxes taken out at highest level will net $724.

Oh, but you know, they don’t want to work because unemployment pays well.
Exactly!! Everyone is hiring, everywhere you go, there are signs saying we are hiring, but no one wants to work...pretty sad.

That was sarcasm. Sorry it wasn’t clear.
This stuck out to me:
“Richard and Danielys Cadrouce, a brother and sister who live in Bushwick, Brooklyn, were excited to work at Almond this summer, eager to make up for the slump of last year when restaurant work in the city all but disappeared.
But after paying $1,000 each to keep renting their New York City apartment, as well as $120 a week each to share a room without air conditioning in a house near Almond, they said they were barely breaking even. They are considering quitting.“
Doesn’t seem like the pay is livable.

I always thought that everyone working in the hamptons were college kids, teachers or firefighters. Aren’t the jobs seasonal? Working out in the hamptons as a seasonal worker generally means it’s your summer vacation. You know work to pay for partying when it’s your day off. They usually do share houses or stay with family.

Because many are making more on unemployment. I have seen help wanted in almost every store I have gone into lately.

Many live out there so yes, they have chosen the few who say they can’t afford the rent and the rest are seasonal workers. Hampton Bays is a huge area for people who work out in the Hamptons year long.

Funny they interview a model, artist and blogger who travels all over, who has been in vogue, who seems to be doing fine but make it sound like he is down and out and can’t survive.

Now the lower paid workers are in a position to ask for better wages. There is plenty of labor if employers are willing to pay them. Labor is just demanding better pay...supply and demand.

Many don’t want to work as it is easier to get the unemployment which many times is more than they were making at a job. Or they can work a few hours at a job and still get unemployment.

There Are Jobs in the Hamptons. If Only Workers Could Afford The Rent.
It is ironic though to have created this entire playground for the mega wealthy and, as the divide between the wealthy and the upper middle, middle, and lower class increasingly grows, now they have no one to work in their glitzy realm.
The article mentioned more than just servers but also teachers and nurses.

And many are moving out of state so they are losing the nurses and teachers from that.

If Unemployment is more then they were making...why not hold out for better wages? It again points out that lower wage labor are finally in a position to demand better.

Real Estate prices and the taxes on Long Island are back breaking. Throw in the highest average utilities and it's hard to just break even.

Extra unemployment won’t last forever and many of these businesses can’t pay more as the less staff, the less people will come to the business as service might not be what they expect, especially from a nicer restaurant in the Hamptons.

Going off track, sorry, but water is the cheapest here though as I remember my parents when they lived in FL paid $50 a month while my bill was about that much if not less every 3 months.

Not to you specifically but your post makes me wonder why people get more aggravated at the underpaid workers not working and serving rich people 40+ miles away at a place can’t never afford to live, dine, or play because they are temporarily getting a few extra bucks, and not get aggravated at the plentiful of young and able-bodied Hampton kids out there who could work but don’t. What happened to bootstraps?
There is just a lot of handwringing going on from the businesses out there but why can’t people in the neighborhood get their kids to pitch in and work so the small businesses don’t close? Just an idea.

These jobs aren’t meant to support a household. They are jobs, not careers. I still can’t get behind a college aged kid making $18 to work fast food. My first JOB I made barely nothing and learned to budget my money. After a year I got a raise and a promotion. Still made little, but I slowly worked my way up until I got my college degree and left the job, with tons of experience and references that praised me. If you want to make more money you need to work your way up….not start at $20+ an hour.
As for the Hamptons, you would be surprised at the amount of foreign students they employ. They sometimes even pay for their rentals. I know Splish splash even did this. It due to Covid they can not bring in foreign employees. So it’s not completely about money, it’s Covid restrictions.

What does your electric bill look like? On average, our utilities on a whole are more expensive then average.

For lots, this is their career choice. Not everyone wants to or has the ability to move past high school in education. And why has minimum wage not kept up with inflation? If minimum wage kept up with inflation - it would be about $24. Minimum wage is a term that was implemented to be the minimum wage by FDR as the minimum a worker could be paid to allow for "him" to have food, shelter, clothes and support a family.
