I think what he said is repulsive, but I'm disappointed that he's been fired since there seems to be a double standard in what some people can say and get away with and others can't.

again- I hate to bring up O and A- but they had a caller today that made a VERY good point

the DJs on hot 97 says not so nice things about white people every day- and that's ok

if you can dish - you should be able to take it

this is so silly- I'm sure he will get a show on sirus or XM (or I hope he does- his shoe being canceld will effect someone my Uncle reps and therefore his $$$$ also)

I totally agree! I listen to that show sometimes and it makes me mad how they go on about white people. What he said was HORRIBLE, but is it a double standard?

This is absolutely the most absurd thing EVER. This has gone way too far. What is next, burning him at the stake? C'mon already.

Re: They just announced on WFAN that Imus has been fired - his show has been cancelled for good

Well all know what free speech is. If Imus were to have said that comment out on the street or in his home or in a bar with friends, he would most certainly be exercising his right to free speech. However if it is believed that his words will ultimately cost his EMPLOYER money through advertising dollars or boycotts, they certainly have the right to fire him. Especially since he did it while he was on the air. Is it BS that they did that? I think so. But they do have that right.

Do I agree they should have fired him? Absolutely not. Should he have been able to serve his suspension and return?Yes. I think that if they were going to fire him, they should have done it the first time he made derrogatory comments about any minority or ethnic group - which he has (including my own). There should be a standard. If one gets fired, EVERYONE gets fired for the same thing.

That's just bull. Sorry. It goes all ways, I think then a lot of other DJ's need to be fired too if they are going to play that game! Chat Icon

But "b!tch" is allowed to be said on TV as well - it's one of those "accepted" curse words, like Damn or Hell.

I know I'm in the minority here, but I think they did the right thing.

He's claims to be a journalist. He said something racist and sexist and completely insensitive. And had to be convinced to apologize for it.

He's not an "entertainer" - a comedian or a rap singer can get away with different things because it's a different venue.

If Katie Couric had said it, she would have been fired. If Jon Stewart said it, he would have been fired.

If Chris Rock says it, he's fine. If 50 Cent or Eminem says it, they're fine.

It's apples and oranges here - can't compare the two in my book.

Yup. He said it on the job where he is NOT expected to speak that way. Eminem and 50 cent are PAID to talk that way as is Chris Rock. BIG difference.

I still think it was lame to have fired him.

Sure. For example, Howard Stern has been saying disgusting, demeaning things about women for years and years. Here's what I'd like to see happen in the wake of this incident and the surrounding media circus:

1. More people start understanding that corporations (such as Imus's sponsors) have way too much power in this country.

2. More people -- on all sides of the spectrum -- realize that much of what passes for radio "entertainment" these days is hateful swill.

I kind of agree, and I kind of don't. I thought of Imus more of a "personality" than a serious news person. I don't think of Jon Stewart as a news person either. They're both commentators, not reporters. And why should Imus be held to a different standard than the Hot 97 djs? (ETA: I am referring to a dj making fun of tsunami victims).

It all comes down to the almighty dollar.

that is all it is-- whether his employers and advertisers agreed or disagreed, it did not matter. If their bottom line is threatened-- they will join whichever flock of sheep.

I so agree Al Sharpton is such a hypocrite, he is so quick to jump when something is said about an african american but what about when something racist is said about a white person? That is ok! It is such bull I am not sayiing what Imus said was ok but if he is going to get heat then so should all of the rappers saying stuff about us white people in their songs, and to say its for entertainment is ridiculous, as Imus is entertainment.

honestly, I don't care about HIM, b/c I never listened to HIM.

I do care though, about what his firing represents.

but, it follows suit when the pressure is put on. I believe a dj was fired from hot 97 a few years back, then Opie and Anthony...and what about the other guys, with the water drinking contest where the chick died?

and even Howard was fired from a few stations before he went to KRock.

I wouldn't care as much if it WAS about social responsibility.

but it IS about money. and I think that is far more disgusting.

couldn't have said it better. it's not about HIM it's about what this means/represents

While I condemn the words that he said, I don't agree at all on the double standard.

Whether you are a rapper, entertainer, radio host.... words are words. One person should not be fired while others are allowed to use similar expression or curse words.

Re: They just announced on WFAN that Imus has been fired - his show has been cancelled for good

I find it interesting that the same people who are saying he shouldn't be fired because it's free speech and he should be able to say whatever he wants are also saying rappers, comedians etc. shouldn't be able to say them.

Can't have it both ways.

Either EVERYBODY should be able to say whatever they want whenever they want to whomever they want or everyone should be censored.

As much as I love the idea of free speech, it's almost impossible in practice without causing major damage.
